This was actually the first song Eddie ever recorded. Chris was recording an album for his friend/room mate Andrew Wood, that had recently overdosed and died. Eddie was in the studio with the rest of what had been Andrew's band, Mother Love Bone. That band had just hired Eddie as their new lead singer. Obviously that band became Pearl Jam. Anyway, Chris was recording and Eddie kind of jumped in to provide more vocals. That's how the song was born. There are a lot of songs written about Andrew Wood, including Would? by Alice in Chains.
@@clarisaexplainsitall79 I always wonder how the grunge scene would have unfolded had Andrew not died. He and MLB were literally a breath away from kicking off the entire movement. Andy was super talented and made for performing to people. He was so young when he died. His potential had barely been noticed by music bigwigs when he died. I figure grunge led by MLB would have been quite different but no less impressive than the bands that stepped in to his place and birthed grunge. This song will always be great. Chris and Eddie have such different voices but together they never miss a beat. They performed this song several times live over the years and it ALWAYS sounded near studio level perfect. One performance sticks out to me because Chris just wandered out on stage at a Pearl Jam show (it wasn’t planned), and he and Eddie jumped into singing so easy. I remember it because Chris had gum in his mouth and I remember being amazed that he could sing perfectly with a wad of gum just in his mouth somewhere. I kept thinking he might choke but nope. Without a hitch. Death of Chris left the world without a voice that had no equal. Powerful!
Temple of the Dog is a collaboration album between some of the former members of Mother Love Bone (who would later become Pearl Jam) and Chris Cornell. The album was a tribute to the former lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood, who was Chris' best mate but who died of a heroin overdose. Eddie Vedder ended up on the album by accident (he only sings on this song). Temple of the Dog were in the studio and Eddie had flown in to meet what would become his new band mates after they had recruited him for their new band (Pearl Jam). Chris was rehearsing Hunger Strike and having a little difficulty with the lower notes. Eddie stepped in to help and the rest is history. Check out Say hello to heaven...Chris' voice is magical in that one.
Sometimes its just too much for the brain to handle at one time. The smoothness of Eddie's voice and the power of Chris' voice is such an incredible pairing.
I have loved this song since it came out. Particularly love how Eddie holds the note, low and, as you said, smooth, while Chris just soars. It’s just beautiful.
Great song that holds up. Some bonkers background on this: Temple of the Dog was formed just to record 1 album. The album and this video was recorded before Soundgarden was really well known and only like a couple months after Pearl Jam formed. Chris Cornell wrote the TOTD songs as a tribute to his friend and roommate Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose. Wood was the singer of a band called Mother Love Bone, which had the guitarist and bassist from what would become Pearl Jam in it. They were supposed to be the next big thing before Wood died. His death is what led to PJ being formed.
You go down the grunge rabbit hole, and all ride that train with you🍻 Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains Nirvana , Soundgarden… maybe some Red Hot Chili Peppers. Kurt Cobain from Nirvana you’ll like as a writer. He’s a poet. A lot of his lyrics don’t necessarily make sense until you hyper analyze what the song was about or where he was at that point in time in his life. Definitely have the lyrics for all grunge. They’re usually really deep..
Eddie Vedder was someone who never "indulged" too much in drugs. He does drink sometimes a lot. He used to do crazy shit. He is very well known for climbing anything and everything at concerts, surprising he is the only one still alive. Thank God we still have him to carry on the greatness. He is " so to say " The GOAT.
I didn't even know who/what Temple of the Dog was before a friend just handed me tape of it and just said "I think you will like it." He was absolutely right! Also gave me Helmet Meantime... True friend and taste maker...
Frack, I miss Chris. Love their voices together. I'm very happy that I was in that genre at that time so that I got to experience it when it happened. Wish I had seen Soundgarden live , but saw Vedder several times. Thank you for this reaction. Hugs from Sweden. ❤
After hearing a couple of your reactions, I just subscribed. I actually still have my Temple the Dog CD! This is still my favorite on that album. I also still have Audioslave’s first album. My sons took me down the Grunge and metal rabbit hole in the 90s. My sons are now 41 & 45! My heart is so sad when I remember the loss of so many fine musicians who have died due to drugs and/or suicide. This 75 year old grandma, who went to middle school, high school, and college in the 60s is still going to concerts up here in Northern California, it’ll be 9 this year from last January to this December, 1st Scott Stapp (Creed) opening for Daughtry and last this year will be MatchBox Twenty (Rob Thomas)!!!
I was on a bus on my way from denmark to holland in 91 i think, drove through the night... couldnt sleep. A friend lent me his walkman. It was Pearl Jam Ten... havnt looked back ever since. Early 90'ies rock is the one thing for me.
Great Song-Check out some of the live performances they did together of this song and also Chris and Chester performed it together as well and lastly Chris’s daughter does a version after he passed R.I.P. Chris and Chester ❤️
Such a wonderful deep emotional rabbit hole you can go down, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana you can really get your 'feels' on! Thanks for your insightful reactions
🎼🔥🔥🎼 .. you found a great band here. These 2 voices are giants of Rock. When I heard this on the radio way back when I stopped in my tracks to listen. At that point I didn't even realize it was Eddie and Chris. What a dynamic duo ... top notch vocals here. I got goosebumps watching this with you. TY 👏👏👏👏👏
Nice reaction. I take too much for granted. I forget that there’s so much people have never heard of that we were watching as it was making history! We were there and there was nothing quite like the music we were hearing at that time.. it was so amazing at the time..wow
I really enjoyed this reaction. I really like this song. It takes me back to a very specific time period in my teenage years. I had a friend who used to play a tape of this almost every time he got in my car for almost a year. You’ve mentioned before relating to songs about addiction struggles and I have a song recommendation for you that fits that. Well 2 actually. Both great songs I think you’d enjoy from a lyrical standpoint as well Son Of A Sinner-Jelly Roll It’s Been A While-Staind
One of the best songs ever, such talent and I never get tired of it. Over my life, whenever I have struggled with terrible depression there have been 3 things that made me find gratitude for living- my kids, all the pets I have rescued and loved over my lifetime, and music. Omg it’s almost worth all the pain of earthly life just to have been able to hear and experience to your very soul’s depths the sheer gift of music like this and the fire of these artists and musicians.
Look up a band called Mother Love Bone and their song Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns, their lead singer dying fro heroin was the motivation for his friend Chris Cornell to do this project as Temple of the Dog with ex member of that band and also eddie vedder, before pearl Jam had formed.
Great reaction! I love your insight to the lyrics as I love to dig into lyrics too. I count myself lucky to have had these great bands through my teenage years and beyond. Check out the documentary by Cameron Crowe Pearl Jam Twenty to see the Seattle Scene and how all these musicians connections were made.
Awesome reaction... definitely check out Temple of the dog Live at Moore Theater 1990 ...song Say hello 2 heavan...it's just Chris singing but it's the tribute to why this band was created to Andy Wood RIP
AWESOME REACTION!! LOVE TEMPLE OF THE DOG. CHRIS CORNELL AND EDDIE VEDDER YEAAA BUDDY!! RIP CHRIS CORNELL 🌹❤️🩹 CHECK OUT ANOTHER SUPER GROUP MAD SEASON AND THE SONG IS "WAKE UP" THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS AWESOME VIDEO! 😊💓🤘✌️
Thank you so much for reacting to this great song and performance by these two amazing vocalists! So glad this song blew you away! I highly recommend another track on this album "Say Hello 2 Heaven", which was written by Chris Cornell as a tribute to his roommate, vocalist Andrew Wood, who at the time had recently died of a heroin overdose. It's a sad but beautiful song (link below). Thanks again, Saeed! ✌💙✌ Say Hello 2 Heaven -- th-cam.com/video/dwXBfbCfbro/w-d-xo.html
Great reaction!! This song is magical, but I believe it's the only song, they sing together. This album was a tribute to Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone(which eventually became Pearl Jam, with Eddie Vedder). You should check out Say Hello To Heaven. It's a powerful tribute to Andrew Wood. See what you think.
This song is about the money that record companies were making off of bands and not kicking that money down. Artist weren't making anywhere near the money that the record companies were. And then they made tickets to shows 10 tmes more than what the band would have charged making shows inaccessible for fans.
This is one of my favorite songs and. I love this video too. You should listen to "Right Turn" by Alice in Chains, with Chris Cornell and Mark Arm. It's way too short, but it's awesome!!! You have to know going in that the song starts with Jerry Cantrell, followed by Chris, then Layne Staley with Jerry coming in to harmonize with Layne, then Mark Arm comes in followed a mix of all 4 singing before the song slowly fades out. It's a must-have on everyone's playlist along with Hunger Strike.
Would love for you to check out the band Angels and Airwaves! “The adventure” “the war” “secret crowds” all good song and videos It’s a super group, singer and guitarist from Blink 182 started
MAD SEASON IS AMAZING!! LAYNE STALEY AND MIKE FREAKIN MCCREADY SOLOS 🔥 🎸AND BARRETT MARTIN ON THOSE DRUMS AND JOHN BAKER SAUNDERS ON BASS AMAZING!! "WAKE UP" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 AND MARK LANEGAN ON "LONG GONE DAYS" AWESOME SUGGESTION. 😊💓🤘✌️

Arguably one of the best albums of the 90s. No skips. Cornell at his absolute best.
Just gimme Chris screaming anything. Audioslave with Morello is the ultimate jam. 🎤 🎸
That's Soundgarden's drummer Matt Cameron, who is now Pearl Jam's drummer.
All legends! Thanks for letting me know about that. Learning a lot!

Mother love bone was most definitely heading up when he died. They were great
"Say hello to heaven" and "Call me a dog" are masterpieces ❤
They’re amazing! They were together before each had their own band! RIP CHRIS 😇🙏🏻the message is something I need to hear today!💖
Oh didnt know they were together before. Wow. Incredible song.
Thanks for watching and take care ❤️
Soundgarden had released albums already when this was recorded. Pearl Jam was just forming.
Only one album was ever done. The other song that got a lot of radio airplay was " say hello 2 heaven" great song to check out.
"Call me a dog", "Say hello to heaven". The studio versions are the way to go in my opinion.
You go down the grunge rabbit hole, and all ride that train with you🍻

You buffoons never mention Candlebox or Silverchair in your grunge lists. RHCP is not grunge whatsoever.
Two iconic voices together. Eddie Vedder's first vocal on a record. He did background vocals for 3 other songs on the album.

Dude! the music from 89-98 was epic and life changing
You need to listen to their song. Say hello to heaven. When my dad passed I listened to that song for 2 days straight
Overload of awesomeness!! Epic, iconic, brilliant. God I'm so glad I grew up with this.

What a wise take on the feelings that those artistics might face when their strugles become a commodity. Thank you Saeed!
