I was a Parachute Rigger in the 1970's...that NB8 parachute was round, but you can steer it (a little bit) by pulling the risers it will dump air in a direction that will allow you a small amount of steering. We (US Navy) decommissioned the chutes after 10 years in service. I would jump that chute he has in a heartbeat though.

The big round military chutes did have risers that had some control such as turning, in which case you would go in that direction. the landings were a hard one. Great collections you have there.

In 1965-66, my father was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX as a battalion commander. All his uniforms had that triangular "Hell On Wheels" patch ( 12:10 ) for the US Army 2nd Armored Division. I remember when we would accompany my father to an airfield at Ft. Hood to wave goodbye during another "Operation Airlift" - giant planes would carry tanks and other equipment over to Germany and then come right back. They were staying ready to go to war at a moment's notice. My parents were very proper and never, ever said a swear word so I was a tad embarrassed that all his patches said "Hell". Funny to think of it now.

Did someone slip on a banana peel at the beginning of the video? I thought I was having a stroke for a moment.
That "Hell on Wheels" was the nickname for The 2nd Armor Division stationed at Ft. Hood in Texas, which is defunct now. My uncle was a civil engineer out there until he retired. I always loved going down there and see the fleets of Abrams tanks and Apache helicopters. It was mind blowing.

    • @douglascampbell9809

Not so much defunct as removed from active rolls. It's 4th in line to be reactivated if the Army needs it. The US Army has something like 3000 tanks sitting in a yard waiting to be refurbished.

actually most round chutes do have SOME degree of control, though not like the delta wings do. You may notice in some films the round ones have a kind of slit on one side. you can use the lines to open and close it a little, and direct your landing a bit. Not enough, but a little. Back in the day it was something to hit a circle with these chutes, nowadays about every jumper with any real training can land on a paper plate. Those kind of jumping competitions have hence fallen by the wayside. Now it's all about formations and stuff they do while in the air.

That looks like a flat circular, probably 28 foot.
If the rip cord is in the front where you can grab it and toss it in the air, that was a bit later.
The ones I used to jump had a rip cord in the front but the pilot shot was spring launched and rested in the backpack over the
    chute.
It was modified because in flat free fall some times there was a pilot chute delay because air was flowing around it and you had to reach one hand out and turn sideways.
With the chute in hand it eliminated that delay.
A friend of mine Don West from Adelaide , Australia perished because after attempting break the Baton pass between himself and another Sky Dive, had a para chute hesitation and after partially opening hit the ground at 90 MPH.
He was a fun and great fellow and we all mourned his loss.
Today's chutes are a totally different animal, they are l rectangular and descend slowly and allow two people hooked together to land easily.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

I’m a paratrooper in the 82nd, that first parachute is definitely an older model worn by loadies (loadmasters) and the safeties (the jumpmasters that stay aboard the aircraft and rake in static lines from the exited jumpers). They require higher altitudes to jump than standard chutes, but are pretty neat. Reserved for emergency bailouts or other worst case scenarios. Very cool! But definitely wouldn’t jump with it unless my life depended on it lol

  • @tootall5559

Even if they aren't all that old, even new and unused, the Army green dress uniforms are worth pretty good money these days. They don't make them any more, all the services use a black/dark blue uniform for what they call Service Dress. Of course they still have some specialized uniforms like the Marine Dress Blues, (which must be purchased, they are not provided unless a billet requires them) and other specialty uniforms If you can get the shoes of the guys that walk the tomb of the unknown soldier still in good shape they bring a real premium. They are custom made just for that unit. Can be lots of money in old uniforms, but it's a special kind of thing that takes a lot of knowledge and or research, and then it takes time, not just everybody wants them. However this collection this guy has would be sought after by prop houses and movie studios. I sell a good number of such things to prop houses and prop masters, even more ordinary things like well worn vintage hats.

His unusual set of wheels also provides "advertising." It draw attention, which is helpful in his trade. A regular vehicle like you suggest would be more practical...but not as fun.😉

Thanks for replying. Yes, you are absolutely right, Ma'am.
Of course it should/could or let's better say has to be an interesting cool looking 4WD oldtimer. Or some kind of a modernized old vehicle. An old cool looking delivery wagon body with a newer 4WD drivetrain and brakes for instance.
Best regards luck health and wisdom.

@@Chr.U.Cas1622 I agree an old 4WD, perhaps one that has been modernized without significantly changing its appearance, would be a good option. He did buy an old delivery wagon awhile back, but he said it was noisy (air seemed to be coming in through the roof) and I presume it wasn't practical for winter driving.

Yeah, such a wagon/delivery car like he once had. A bit bigger maybe and modernized in a moderate way. Great Johnathan W. has a black one on his property. There had even been videos to this car (it's not modified).
Or maybe an old good looking van (pure 70's feeling)? Mr. Archbolds Ambulance is already a really really cool thing to have. But way too high fuel consumption and no 4WD. His BMW wagon 4WD was a technical mess = modern crap.

With the animal heads hanging on the wall, remember the tv show called "Harry & the Hendersons?" On one show, Harry seen an animal head on the wall near the door, he looked on the other side of the wall and couldn't see the rest of the animal. I think he took the animal head off the wall and tried to bury it.

The chute looks like a load-master safety parachute. Air force personel in charge of the cargo on a AF aircraft would wear those. Jump master in charge of Chalks would wear one as a safety as well. It's not a sky-dive rig.

BTW - if you look for an Airborne Rigger (they packed our chutes in Edmonton, until the early 2000s). Someone close by is qualified to inspect and re-pack that chute.

As for the Parachutes, open them up, straighten them out on a LOOOOONG table, inspect them and repack them by a qualified rigger , then get trained in parachute jumping and correct landing techniques and then go up and test them !
