You are correct. Layer files, map files, project files, layout files, and so on created in ArcGIS Pro are not compatible with ArcGIS Desktop. Data files such as shapefiles, Geodatabases, Grids, TINS, and so on should be compatible.

Can you open layer files created in ArcMap into ArcGIS Pro? When I try to, I get a red exclamation mark telling me that the source is broken. The file still works fine in ArcMap.

Yes you can read layer files created in ArcMap into ArcGIS Pro. Based on what you described, I am thinking you have not set up a connection to the data in ArcGIS Pro. Because ArcGIS Pro does not have an established connection to the data location (i.e. folder, geodatabase, or server) it will add the layer to the map but show a broken data source. Try adding a connection to the data location in the Catalog pane. Then add the layer file which was created in ArcMap.
