This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels, I find myself watching your videos first whenever I sit down to catch up on all the stuff I subscribe to :)
For "not an electrician", you know a lot of the tricks of the trade. The piece of plastic as a mouse on the string and the vacuum to pull it through is a great trick, we use that all the time. You also tie the string to the wires the same way I would, however I would also wrap all of the knots in the string around the wire along with the whole front 6in with electrical tape. That makes a nice smooth pointy bundle out of it.
Yep, I was going suggest the same thing. Only thing that might it more difficult for him was since he just pulled the cables out of the ground the tape may not have stuck to them great. But with fresh dry cables it would be a nice extra level of security that I almost always do.
Also never pull a cable run without a fallow string tied on for future cable, if you have room in the conduit. Plus if the string comes off you do not have to do the mouse thing again string is cheap. There are many things you can use to lubricate the cables to help ease the cables through the conduit.
@@frankdeegan8974 you sound like you are a communications cable installer, such as me. Always install a extra pull rope with the cable. Just be sure to use a swivel so it doesn't twist to much around the cable.
Just came across your channel about 4 days ago and I've binge watched all of your videos in these past few days. Love the channel keep up the good work, I've always wanted to do something like this. Which is why I'm starting my channel next month :)
When I get my income tax returns back, I will be buying me a really nice video camera. For future reference, if anyone wants to check it out in about a month from now. The name is Unforseen Outdoors, I have no videos uploaded right now.
Hi Kris, You're, by far, my fav subscription. You have a good mind, and know how to use it. Rare in these dumbed down times we live in. The vacuum cleaner trick was ingenious, something my father would have done. Keep up the great work!
I found your channel recently and have viewed your projects with great anticipation.I have to take my hat off to you , not only are you fulfilling your life style but you are producing some first class instructive video . Keep it up Terrific committment.
You are inspiring. I am land hunting right now and I pray to find land with flowing water with good head pressure so that I may do the same. Thank you for the updates.
Pulling cable is part of my job. The hover idea was great. For a short pull the way you did it is perfectly fine. The only things I would change for a long pull would be to use some electrical tape to bind the two cables(at the end and about every meter) and some cable lube.
Wicked, and glad that cable decided to come out easy for you, that could have been an epic task if it was hung up on something under the ground and you had to dig it all. Keep the videos coming, this will be a good year for you. ATB Darren
After so much time, I'm sure it's been said, but when tying a pull string to wire (even more so with wires(plural) loop a series of half-hitch knots (oriented so that pulling (from direction of pull) bites into the wire) then give your pullstring leading and trailing ends a quick wrap of tape, then a couple more wraps to cover the last couple inches of wire transitioning to just the string. taping the lead and tail of the string keeps your half-hitches taught and taping the wire end/string only transition keeps the wires from poking into the wall/doubling back on itself... tape tip can also help it pull around bends or through access junctions.
I would really only like to read somewhere that you ventilated your battery box. It is very important that your shed does not go up in flames or your found laying on the floor from gases. Other than that concern, i always look forward to seeing your next vid.
Jason Hendren I agree, vent pipes in and out to prevent gas accumulation. Depending on battery type, it needs some protection from fumes as they'll soon ruin that lovely cabinet.
Would it not be a better option to run 12v lighting direct from the batteries rather than bumping it up to 240v just to run a low wattage bulb ? You can get some really good 12v LED light fairly cheap now days.
Yes and no. It depends on location. If the batteries are close to the application with fairly stout wire in between the two, 12 volts would be better. But for distance though wire like he has, 240v AC will carry power with much higher efficiency. And I just realized your comment is over a year old. Sorry.
Hi, given all the ongoing development you are doing on your land have you considered spending the time to produce a site map with all of your services marked up? Several absolute reference points around your land such as your antenna mast to survey from would make it a great reference tool for the years to come.
If you ever replace that inverter, there are ones around that just have a terminal block to "hard wire" the inverter to save using a plug like that, although they can be hard to find.
A tip for tightening up the large pipe fittings in awkward spaces is to wrap an old inner tube around it, stick a piece of pipe through the loop, twist it up tight and that will give a better grip than ratchet straps. You can buy commercial rubber strap wrenches but how often would you use it after installation.
About the cabinet: i would try to cut off from the center of the door until I created a nice bezel and put a glass so i can see through the cabinet, in case it cauches fire.
I pull cables for a living, honestly the only thing I might do different is tie your half hitches from the other end so they all tighten up when you pull the cable.
hi Kris, great job with the wire the next time I would put some electrical tape on the staggered nose of cables and down your half hitches to prevent the pulling rope coming off in the pipe by slipping.. Peter
Love the daily updates...but I know it's hard on you to get videos shot and edited everyday. As you say just stay positive and get that tidying done in little chunks....each little chunk will be a victory and will make you feel better for the rest of the tidying 👍
Another video! awesome, it’s like Christmas comes again! :) But seriously, great work. Very inspiring. I’ve been following right since the beginning with laying the tyres for the roundhouse base.

awesome job!!!.....you could make a three sided plant-wall to cover the water heater & put hooks on it to hang things too-that way if you need to get to water heater you can........you are going to be totally off-grid-yahoo!!!!!
You should find a small electric water heater to use instead of those heating coils. That way you can still use the excessive energy from your system instead of waisting it first nothing. You can store the extra energy in hot water. Just trying to help.
Nice work again Kris. Am watching and learning with every video you make. Any chance of an update on your tree planing and where your at with regards to starting your new workshops?
Im glad to hear you're going to clean up your huge mess. I noticed it on the last vlog and it made me cringe. I enjoy your vlogs. I like watching you sort out problems. Cheers
Nice job. I have a couple of questions. How is the cobb holding up? Have you had fill any cracks or the like? What are your winters like, do you get any snow or below zero temps? Cheers mate.
Hi, the cob is holding up perfectly so far. there are some gaps around some of the logs that are behind the wood stove but the insulation means no air can pass so its not a problem. im only talking 5mm gaps around the logs that are right behind the fire. no cracks no movement that i can tell. and yes we get freezing temps but not that often. the small wood stove keeps in 20-24 degrees inside. i am very comfortable :)
Hi Kris, I wonder what will be your "controler" for Pelton generator. Juste take care with it, when the battery will be full charged, the controler will disconect the charge to battery, so your generator will be unloaded and will over-speed, with no load my generator go to more than 400v (4000 rpm). 2 ways : when battery is full, you stop the turbine (could be with an electric valve and a kind of procesor (arduino), or you use a controler with a dump load (a resistor and may be use it to heat water) see :scoraigwind.co.uk/using-a-high-power-resistor-as-a-dump-load/
good question, becaue i have lower head and a lower voltage turbine mine is going to be quite simple. once the battery is full and it disconnects it will just spin faster. but wont be to fast to make it over rated speed and over voltage of the charge controler. my calculations say it will be under 200v that way it keeps things simple.

Hey Kris, thanks a lot for all the videos lately, i'm enjoying that a lot, and I admire you for your bravery and dedication. I have a simple question though, I have the feeling that you are only missing two things before having the ABSOLUTELY perfect place, a system to get clean (drinkable) running water from the rain/stream, and a food producing (potentially involving permaculture ?) garden. I'm wondering because, in the "why I'm going off grid" video I think you'd talked about permaculture. Is there any chance we see any of those soon ?
I could be wrong but they look like 100ah or possibly 200ah 12v AGM lead acid batteries, im purely basing that off the fact they look identical to my 100ah AGM batteries except mine are blue.
Dude you are killing it on this power build! Very exciting! Love the plastic bag trick, only time its a problem is if water gets in a low spot in the pipe! What is the total amount of Watts you have now via the solar panels?

good point. i will do one very soon. this time of year when the sun is low its quite dark in the woods. does not make for the best video. on the next bright day i will do a roundhouse update.
You should consider adding some ventilation to your batter locker. Some batteries create hydrogen. I am familiar with at least one death cause by ignition of battery created hydrogen. Likely wouldn't hurt anything anyways

''I'm not an electrician'', but you play a pretty good one on the Tubes. Nice job. My only concern, is the conduit large enough for the wire? It looked awfully tight and could cause heat.
I am an electrician most you work was just fine except I urge you to find a different location for that sub-board there is just too many water hazards in that location more so if you put a washing machine there, preferably higher and further away I know that the sub-board isn't pretty but about eye level is best also somewhere easy to get at even if you put the whole enclosure inside a nice wooden cupboard to dress it up
