The older Pop'n games may be a bit off-putting for some but the franchise has evolved over the years and now has modernized visuals, music choices (including licensed songs and old Konami IP remixes), and much needed difficulty balances and speed choices. ASC (arcade style controllers) are indeed where it's at - it uses the same arcade size quality parts, but they are a bit pricey and only recommended if you get on well with the games!

It’s a really interesting one for me because while I love the idea of rhythm games in general, I grew up with the western Rock Band and Guitar Hero era so the idea of the Bemani games and soundtracks has always been intriguing but they’re just such a different vibe.
