    HandToolRescue guy has a big plastic barrel of Evaporust that he just uses over and over. They sponsor him, would be great if they did that for you too!

      I like to keep the bloopers in the video, I hate it when everything is so perfect.

    Also, you can reuse the Evaporust dozens of times. The acid loses its potency fairly quickly.

      Plus, just the hazards and hassle of using hydrochloric, if it doesn’t work demonstrably better, makes Evaporust the hands-down winner

    Beautiful job on the vice. We’re starting to see more and more of unpainted finishes lately. Looks good on the vice.
    I can see that Evaporust is superior, but factoring in the cost and the availability where I live, give me acid anytime. Besides, I can use the acid to get rid of the evidence from people that piss me off. Evaporust is no good for that. 😂

    Looks like a shop class vise. I believe the washer on the spindle goes inside the channel before the pin.

    That evaporust is great stuff and it looked like acid worked better but the acid will weaken the iron if left in too long another cool resto

    • @AJRestoration
      @AJRestoration  ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, if you forget about the iron in the acid, and come back it might be gone haha

  • @lpconserv6074
    @lpconserv6074 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice job on the comparison... Also, Very interesting vise... This one, although quite simple in its manufacture is NOT a cast piece subject to cracks or breaks. It is also completely repairable with simple welding methods since it is standard forged or rolled steel. If you ding up the anvil section, simply clean out the ding, fill it proud with weld, and file it back flush. Good as new.

    So, it looks like the best process is to do all the initial cleaning with hydrochloric acid, wash it, and then let it soak in Evaporust. That way there is better rust removal, less cleaning of the part afterward, and better protection. And it keeps the Evaporust cleaner.

  • @fredrichardson9761
    @fredrichardson9761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A few other marks against HCl and in favor of Evaporust: (1) HCl reacts fairly strongly with Iron creating some form of Iron Chloride (that might have been the discoloration) and (2) Evaporust is a lot safer than dilute HCl and you don't run into safe handling and waste disposal issues of HCl.

    • @fredrichardson9761
      @fredrichardson9761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also meant to say: great restoration! Even to my untrained eye those weld marks make me think this wasn't a high end vice to begin with, but it sure looks a lot better now! 👍

  • @garymucher4082
    @garymucher4082 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking at that vice, it looks like someone home-made it. Not to mean that there is anything wrong with that, but it looks pretty easy to make such a vice just looking at the construction. Thumbs Up

    Nice result with this basic Vice, but can you do next time something with very ugly welds? Maybe it's just me, but these anoint the he'll out of me.

  • @DaleDix
    @DaleDix 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You would wire wheel or sand before treatment in chemicals.
    Evaporust is safer and better for the environment and can be used over an over again.
    Came out great.

    Edit: I have little knowledge about these things.

    That pin you put in the screw shaft is a design problem. It will wear against the jaw frame as you turn the screw out, and eventually fail. It needs a washer between the pin and the jaw frame.

    • @AJRestoration
      @AJRestoration  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried to put a washer in between but there was no space at all.

    • @texascottonfarmer
      @texascottonfarmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. In the video, it did not look like there was any space. The only alternative I could see would be to remove the washer on the other side of the screw shaft and put it between the pin and the jaw frame.

    • @erikalmighty
      @erikalmighty 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    6:38 "Slight oxidation on the part that was cleaned with the acid" because they don't neutralize it in water and baking soda🤷‍♂️
