My understanding is that if you spell a different word from the word you say first, and the spelled word is a valid 5-letter word, that is considered the word that you play, so it's OK. I suspect that in a lot of these flubs, they say a word that is not 5 letters and don't realize it until after they say it.

Yeah; and this explains why the bonus letter rule came to Bonus Lingo in season 2. I also account that the first season was a lackluster season not only because of that, but also for being the only season taped on the set of the Dutch version.
