Mountain Camp in Strong Winds.

- Out wild camping during a mountain wind storm where things got a litttle bit scary as I sheltered inside my tiny MSR Access 1 Tent.
The weather forecast was for some light to moderate gusts of wind; however it started to pick up in strength rather than reduce which was a bit alarming.
This change in the forecast put both my Access 1 tent and my friends Scarp 1 through a fairly severe testing for a good few hours. We estimate that the gusts on the mountain must have been at least 50 mph.
Both tents put up a very impressive performance without any damage and luckily for us the wind speed dropped later in the night as forecast. This allowed us to do some mountain and landscape photography before retiring to bed for the evening.
To finish of the trip we headed up to the mountains summit before dawn for some breath-taking views and a spectacular sunrise.

Agree about the wind n rain being the best sleep-aid Chloe! Sleet rattles a bit but makes the tent seem even more of a haven, and the sounds of snow puthering down on the tent and sliding to the ground too. Never rest easy in electrical storms tho, despite the statistics being massively in our favour ! In severe lightning storms there is always that small frisson of apprehension that the 1 in the statistical ratio could be me no matter how many millions to one, and because mountains make weather it isn't always possible to get off and away from vulnerable salient features quickly enough to avoid being in the danger zone!

All the MSR haters showed up to this video hoping to see the tent blow down in the wind, and to chastise you for not buying a Hilleberg. They're very disappointed it remained standing. I'd say this three pound (1.37kg) tent performed admirably.

i don't back pack much anymore at 64 years of age, but i have camped in a lot of funky chicken weather. there is no subsitute for a top of the line 4 season tent. i do love my 4 & 6 man cabelas alaskan guide model tents.

(Mine was eaten by mice lol) Ive not been doing much wild camping lately as ive not been well and ended 2019 with a couple of weeks in hospital, it does you good to see films like this when you cant get out yourself. It's funny how things work out. Watching videos like this gives you inspiration. Despite 2020 and all that's happened, when the restrictions eased my friends and I completed a Munro and a Corrbett during June and July.

A couple of wind stories. Camping in the Badlands (flat plains) one fall I set up my cheap little 2-person tent and in the evening it was fine. I woke up in the middle of the night to the tent having flattened around me. Broke a fiberglass pole. I simply climbed into the back of my pickup and slept on my cot that was already set up. The next morning of the approximately 30 tents that had been set up the previous evening at most a half dozen were still standing. And several years ago I pulled into the spot I wanted to stay late one evening (Wyoming). About 6K feet. Decided to sleep in the back of my 4-Runner. I was awakened in the middle of the night by what sounded like a jet engine. What the hell!? It was the cold air from above (the mountain range I was in topped out at over 12K feet) roaring down the slope and through the radiator of my vehicle. The wind is a great sorter of tents and people. I've had just about enough of it and prefer a hard-sided camper. It's not too hard to put up with one night of tent flapping in high winds but when the wind persists it's impossible to get a decent night's sleep. Combine that extended tent flapping and lack of sleep with rain, snow, and/or severe cold and it gets dangerous. And far from fun.

Superb Ray, wild camping in a storm makes for a very uncomfortable night. I had to weigh my tent down with rocks last time I camped in a storm, but the photography in the morning was worth it. Regards - John

Top Tip for 2020 if I may - You can still do a bit of local weather forecasting without an internet signal. Most smartphones have a built-in Barometer which you can access via a third-party app. The phone's GPS will allow it to compensate for altitude gained/lost as well. Thus you can know whether the atmospheric pressure is high or low, and (even more useful imo) whether it's rising or falling. I find this gives me a pretty good idea of what the next 36 hours will bring.

Your gonna laugh but 1 of the best strongest tents ive has is the oex phox 1v2 60 mph winds solid as a rock
Looking at the video (very nice!) I was trying to see where the timber line was, but could not make it out. If there was one, it might have been a good idea to go back down among the trees for shelter from the wind.
No place to shelter other than back at the car. As predicted through the wind dropped thank god. Atb

I’ve tried numerous brands, including Inov8 (found them too narrow) some I’ve suffered similar blister ridden feet, and always seem to be happiest in Merrells, did the HRP long distance path, not 1 blister after 20-30+ mile days, worth trying if you’ve never owned a pair. Cheers John
