As i know and hear from other preachers Mary remained a virgin even after the birth of Jesus, but she had born 4 more children to St,Joseph and it change her nature of being a virgin,i had read it in the bible too.
For the supremacy of Jesus as God,Mary in personal connection to God remained a virgin,it is hard to accept that she no longer virgin after the birth of his children to StJoseph,it might become also a contradiction for Jesus as God, reason muslims do not accept Jesus as God only Jesus is prophet to Islams.
Because there is nothing to prove that. Blessed does not mean Holy and she was not ever sin-free. Jews were told to consummate the marriage just like Catholics are. They just did it a few months late.
Romans 3:4 Let God be true, and every human being a liar. Galatians 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isa. 7:14). She was a virgin when the Holy Ghost overshadowed her. A virgin is clean and untouched. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way: When as his mother, Mary, was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 1:18). Joseph was so disappointed that he wanted to leave her. We can imagine the feelings he had. “Then Joseph, her promised husband, being a just man, not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privately.” He wanted no scandal but was aggravated and therefore decided to leave her quietly. “But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary, thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” (Mt. 1:19-20). Here we find the first statement that Mary who was espoused to Joseph later became his wife. Those who read the context will find out that Joseph acted precisely according to the instruction given unto him. “… did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife, and knew her not till she had brought forth her first-born son; and he called his name Jesus” (vs. 24-25). This is a very clear statement. Only after the birth of Jesus Christ had they family relations. From this marriage, four sons and daughters whose number is not given came forth. “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brethren James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us?” (Mt. 13:55-56). This is the scriptural truth. All other ideas which are meant to honour Mary are purposely formulated and invented.

"But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Mat. 19:26 Scipture tells us the angel said to the chosen WOMAN : "rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with thee". If the WOMAN is full of grace, as the angel said. Is there place for sin? @@Alfredo8059 The person that stops the serpent's head is Jesus. Mary only carries Him to birth. There is nothing anywhere that says God made her sin-free in her mother's womb. There is nothing saying God ever made her sin-free. The Holy Spirit kept Jesus sin-free while Mary was carrying her. So He would not be stained by her sin nature. Rev. 12 is not talking about Mary at all. It is talking about Jesus being a Jew from Israel. Catholics fail to read the whole Chapter. They get hung up on the first couple of verses. Gal. 4:4 is about Mary but there is nothing suggesting she was anything special. There is no capital w in the verse.
Even as a Protestant, I believed in Mary's perpetual virginity. I just can't imagine Joseph would approach her in that way. Sure, he had rights to her as her husband, but she had been the vessel that brought for the flesh and blood child of the living God.
Think about this: it is necessary that Mary was a virgin to conceived Christ (to prove he was the son of God), but there was no necessity afterwards, but the prophesy of Isaiah mentions before + After. Does not make sense to concede the virginity after giving birth if she was going to lose it latter. Secondly if Christ is the only begotten Son of God the father does make sense that his human part is also the only son of Mary. Finally, Christ is the definitive son of Israel why there will be another? If Mary had another sons they would have been a sort of celebrities and surely we would have some strong evidence of them; but we do not have. I hope this helps.
@@RicardoGarcia-ib8ro I appreciate your reply. I don't know why you think I need help understanding what I have always believed as a simple fact, that Mary was simply a virgin before and after the conception and birth of Christ. Protestants want to keep her down and practically a nonentity until they trot her out at Christmas and then, like the Christmas tree they pack her back up. My belief is far simpler.
I had the same idea about St. Joseph. There was a reason why God chose him to be Mary's husband and the "earthly" father to His Son. In reading the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, you can get a sense of St. Joseph's character. I feel the God saw him as the right man for the job, so to speak.
@@albertchin1050 I definitely feel that way because first, Joseph would have to accept the situation, that Mary was pregnant and the baby wasn't his. And he would have the awesome responsibility of coparenting the Son of God. They would have to be both extraordinary people.
In Latin América never invite someone to a party, saying: " your home family is invited" because you will have a huge party. Extended family is considered just family and we call our cousins brother-cousin or sister-cousin.
This was really helpful. As a protestant I have been wrestling with Mary (not literally) for a while now. I am pretty convinced she stayed a virgin and is held in high esteem in the church. Knowing what the reformers said was equally helpful. Thank you for this video. Really good and informative 👍
My whole extended family is Protestant and I’m Catholic, and I never understood how much they insist that Mary was merely a vessel (I had a Protestant friend call her an “incubator”) but not special or worth praising in any way! I’m glad you understand the value of her in our lives as Christians.
Matthew 1:25 says that Joseph didn’t “know” his wife until after Jesus was born. To say that a man “knew” his wife and then she conceived was used a few times in Genesis.
@@sailorarwen6101 that verse is merely emphasizing the virgin birth of Jesus. The word "until" as used many times in the Bible does not imply a future action. For example: Genesis 6-7 we see: "At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made, and sent forth a raven; and it went to and fro UNTIL the waters were dried up from the earth." But we see that Raven stopped returning well before that. That's why Noah then sends out a dove to do the scouting. 1 Corinthians 15:25: ”For he (Christ) must reign UNTIL he has put all his enemies under his feet.” Does this mean that Jesus' reign will end? Of course not. The commentary of the Church Fathers further supports this interpretation: St. Jerome AD 420: "So here the Evangelist informs us, in that wherein there might have been room for error, that she was not known by her husband until the birth of her Son, that we might thence infer that much less was she known afterwards. Lastly, I would ask, Why then did Joseph abstain at all up to the day of birth? He will surely answer, Because of the Angel’s words, “That which is born in her” He then who gave so much heed to a vision as not to dare to touch his wife, would he, after he had heard the shepherds, seen the Magi, and known so many miracles, dare to approach the temple of God, the seat of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of his Lord?" Just imagine you were in Joseph's position. Would you touch the Mother of God?
Brian Sardinas you’re stating the obvious. I’m not questioning the virgin birth. It wouldn’t fulfill prophesy if Mary didn’t stay a virgin throughout her pregnancy. I’m pointing out that the verse says he didn’t KNOW her until after the baby was born. Which certainly means they continued on as a married couple once Christ was born. As evident in Genesis. “Knew” implies intimacy between husband and wife.

I left the Church in 1974 attended the Baptist Church until 2016. They teach that Mary was just a "host" for Christ . Nothing special about her at all. I am grateful to our Lord Jesus Christ and his mother the Blessed Mother for leading me home.
As an ex-Catholic, this Evangelical believes she was more than just a "host". She is "blessed among women." Here, this little girl had the faith of a mustard seed and accepted her role, quite possibly, knowing the scorn she would receive being pregnant out of wedlock. No, she was more than just a "host." You were better off being a Protestant in another church. Why is that those that leave the Catholic church think they have to belong to some Reformation era Protestant church? These churches in present day are going the way of apostates themselves.
As we all call her "THE VIRGIN MERRY" but as i call her chosen one b'cuz she gave birth even when she is virgin BUT that doesn't mean she is just a host who gave birth to jesus and took care of him for years just to be a host......................
There is nothing special about her, she was a sinner just like the rest of us. There is only one who was special, or Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, praying to Mary will get you nowhere
@@marcusmoore5191 "There is nothing special about her..." We agree that she was a sinner like the rest of us, but to say there was nothing special about her is going a bit overboard, Marcus. Even Gabriel, a messenger from God, said she is "blessed among women". That includes YOUR own mom. I sure as heck hope you have high regard for your own mom.
Quite honestly, does it really matter if Mary was or wasn't a virgin for life? The main thing is that she was a virgin when she conceived Jesus. It was a spiritual conception. She was/is the mother of God. I don't know for sure if she was a virgin for ever. I don't think it matters.
It's more a question of sacredness: she was consecrated by carrying Jesus in her womb (He's God!) so another pregnancy would be like me using a sacred coup for drinking whiskey, like using the sancta sanctorum of the Temple for a secular party. So, if someone questions it, it feels like a desecration.
I believe its relevant in the sense that if you understand sacredness. Mary was consecrated yo God for the specific sacred purpose of bringing Jesus into the world. In scripture once someone or something is consecrated or set apart for God's use that person or thing cannot be used for anything else. In the Bible wether you are speaking of the temple, the ark of the covenant, priests, and more in the old testament or of consecrated celibacy, the eucharist marriage or more in the new testament once someone or something is consecrated for God's purpose, to use it for another purpose would be a sin or worst a sacrilege. The ark of the new covenant 4:17-20 The sanctuary 2 chronicles 30:8 The Nazirite vow judges 13:3-5 The offerings exodus 29:31-34 The priest exodus 29:1-9
I agree. The Bible doesn't say if Mary's cousin Elizabeth had any more children after she gave birth to John The Baptist and it doesn't matter so why not the same about Jesus? In the Old Testament women who couldn't conceive because they were"barren" or past child baring age became pregnant when God made it possible. The Bible is silent on weither some of these women had further children. Also not EVERYTHING is known about all the people in the Bible. For example we don't know of the family situation of all the prophets ie did they have wives/children/ biological brothers and sisters or the name of their parents? Did any of these facts affect the way they served God? No. In my view the fact weither Mary remained a perpetual Virgin didn't make any difference in Jesus' ministry and sacrifice for our sins. I'm a Protestant(Church Of Ireland) and in our Apostle and Nicene Creed we say that Jesus was "Born of the Virgin Mary" and that's it,no statement of weither Mary remained a virgin or not and therefore does it have any bearing on Jesus dieing for our salvation. Again no..
It does matter because it a supposed prophecy. Though some suggest the error of the whole story is greater. Example the bible gets this prophecy from a book called the torah, and in the torah it suggest nothing of a Virgin birth. Another error is that the torah suggest his name is Emanuel, Not Jesus.
@@trich103 , The Greek word for “until” (heos) does not imply that Mary had marital relations after the birth of Christ. In 2 Samuel 6:23, we read that Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child “until” the day of her death. (Rest assured that she didn’t have any children after that day, either.) Hebrews 1:13 and 1 Timothy 4:13 are similar examples. When we interpret any passage, we must consider what the author was trying to say. Matthew’s intent here is not to explain what happened after the birth of Christ. He is only concerned with the fact that Joseph and Mary had no relations before then. It is the virgin birth, not later siblings, that Matthew is concerned with.
I understand this is a sincere and passionate issue for many people, so I do not take the issue lightly or disrespectfully. However, I do not understand the necessity or drive to believe she remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus. I understand why she needed to be a virgin prior to his birth, but why afterwards? Is there a prophetical or biblical reason necessitating it? I understand the drive to believe this today may be driven in large part due to tradition and statements by the Church. However, was the earlier thought driven more by cultural values that virginity is a better, or more pure, way for a woman to live and thus Mary would be more pure because of remaining a virgin? If so, I would say the Bible tells us she was married. Having children during marriage is by no means less pure to God than virginity during marriage.
Good point. I used to think the same way-- though now, I tend to believe she is "ever-Virgin". Not better, but just because of who she is, and how she was and is called. And even if not a physical virgin (though I believe she was), she is the penultimate spiritual virgin, and totally "married" to God thru the Holy Spirit.
We will never understand the way that God thinks! Why not just relax and accept His plan. On a lighter side, and meaning no disrespect, if my older brother was the redeemer, the miracle worker, the great preacher, the Son of God, no less, ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!... I might find myself getting a little frustrated from time to time.. Imagine having to listen to... "Your brother always does his homework" "Your brother never gets speeding tickets" " Your brother makes his bed every morning" Get the picture? I will never understand God's ways, so I don't try.
Also, tradition tells us that Mary had taken a vow of perpetual virginity, and that St. Joseph knew and respected that. Social customs of the day would not accept an unmarried mother, even the mother of God, so the child Jesus had to be raised in what would appear to be an ordinary family.
@@LS-ei7xk If Mary had other children after Jesus then heretics would claim years later that Jesus came after she was no longer a virgin and that Jesus is not the Messiah. @Samuel Jennings Well one could easily argue that Jesus didn't always follow Jewish custom, see Matthew 15, and Mark 7. Why did Jesus entrust Mary to John? Simple! Matthew 12:46-50 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! FOR WHOEVER DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN IS MY BROTHER AND SISTER AND MOTHER.” NKJV John 7:1-5 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” FOR EVEN HIS BROTHERS DID NOT BELIEVE IN HIM. NKJV Why would Jesus entrust His mother to his unbelieving brothers when His true brethren are those who do the will of God? Matthew 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. NKJV Jesus clearly put brothers and sisters in the faith above those of biological family. Mark 10:28-30 Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time-HOUSES AND BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND MOTHERS AND CHILDREN AND LANDS, with persecutions-and in the age to come, eternal life. NKJV
A couple of things: 1) Calling cousins 'brothers' is far far more widespread than to Semitic languages. 2) Mary's ever-virginity can be deduced from the Scripture. Whenever the Lord requires something to be dedicated to Him, it must always be something completely unblemished, unused previously and be put to no other purpose but for the Lord. Heck, Christ wouldn't even ride a donkey that was ridden before.
@@TheMoonSeesMe Oh of course. But that's the difference - He chose Mary because it pertained to His holiness, and He didn't avoid prostitutes and sinners because it pertained to their holiness.

True, it is not a salvific issue, however it leads the Catholic Church and those who hold to the perpetual virgin doctrine to further venerate and elevate Mary and to use her as an intercessor to Christ. There is only one Mediator between Man and God and that is Jesus Christ. There is no need to pray to Mary for intercession to Jesus. You can pray to him directly as he is our only advocate, intercessor, redeemer and saviour.
@@mickyfrazer786 We pray for each other so that Jesus Christ will hear our prayer and intercede on our behalf to the Heavenly Father, who will grant (if it is his will) what we have prayed/asked for the other person, to manifest in their life. (which is scriptural) It is not the same as prayer to the "Virgin" Mary in hope that she, being the mother of Jesus, will intercede upon our behalf to her Son, who will then be moved to intercede upon her behalf to the Father. (which is not scriptural) Prayer to Saints and the "Virgin Mary" are not scripturally evidenced. Yes, I appreciate that Catholics call Mary worship "veneration" however, if one is praying to her for any reason, I really can't see how that is just mere veneration. Prayer isn't the same as merely admiring/holding in respect, either a Saint or Mary's character. Prayer is only to be directed at Jesus, the Father or the Holy Spirit. We are not even allowed to pray to angels let alone other human beings. We don't pray "to" each other! There is no need for such intercession from Mary, neither are we anywhere instructed in scripture to seek such intercession. Jesus does it all! John 14:13-14 NKJV 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. Just obey Jesus' instructions and pray-to/ask the Father in his name and he will do whatever we have prayed/asked in order to glorify the Father, for we have full confidence that Jesus Messiah will intercede on our behalf directly. It makes no difference if you are praying for yourself or praying for another person or group of people. Neither do you need to pray to Mary for forgiveness of sins. 1 John 2:1 NIV "My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ, the Righteous One." May Heavenly Father's blessings and peace be upon you and your family.

I do understand what you are saying but the problem is in what the Catholic Church has done in adding non biblical characteristics to Mary, coming only short of calling her a goodess although there are many catholics who do worship her. 1. She was never immaculately conceived (born sinless) 2. She never ascended bodily into heaven. 3. There is no biblical title of Queen of heaven except for a demonic idol in Jeremiah or other pagan godesses. 4. Matthew 1:25 clearly states that She had sexual relations with Joseph after Jesus was born. So term ever virgin clearly shows that the Roman church exalts itself above God's word.

You said that there is no biblical reference by which we should take doctrine from the bible. Well I believe I just cited a clear one from the Bible. Were you referring to a different Bible or were you taught that in catechism class. I hear many catholics complain of the many varying interpretations of scripture from protestants resulting in many different churches and I agree with them on this issue. But it's almost equally confusing when I have to hear many different catholics having varying beliefs on many issues within the same church. I do not follow Martin Luther. I follow/believe some of his doctrines that he taught because they are biblically founded. What he has contributed to the modern world, along with other reformers, is that they risked their lives to ensure that I have a bible in my hands and in my language so that I can study it to show myself approved unto God according to PAUL'S Instruction. Well I can see post reformation that the catholic church also realised that Jesus no longer had a problem with the Bible being in the people's language. Jesus probably realised that Martin luther, et. al, were correct and conveyed it to the Vicar of Christ a little late. But as they say, better late than never.
The idea that "brothers" meant cousins is not consistent with the pericopes. When Jesus returned from the Wedding at Cana, it says he returned to Capernaum with his Mother and brothers, and his disciples. This means they likely lived together in the same household. If they were cousins, there would have been nothing significant about his cousins being there, since it was so close to Nazareth.
As a Protestant, I’ve never considered the perpetual virginity of Mary to completely... necessary. I don’t have any problem with it either. You did bring up some interesting points that I hadn’t considered before, specifically that the doctrine goes so far back as to nearly the very foundations of Christianity itself. I had always thought it was an early medieval invention, not that really know why I would think that. I might reconsider my position in the future.
I had my Protestant phase and while certain Catholic doctrines made more sense to me this was unnecessary in my eyes back then so I do get why you think that. I eventualy reverted back to Catholicism and it was clear in a "heureka" moment. Catholic Productions with dr. Brant Pitre was very helpful so I highly suggest it if you want to go into this topic.
@@chippanapatcha1679 what about it? It just says they didn't have sexual intercourse when she was pregnant. It never says they had it after she gave birth. They are some examples in the Bible. 1:19-20). @@gereamiaosea6659 yes that’s true she did have other children and also here’s what Roman Catholics believe. They believe that she was like a forever virgin and had Jesus as her only child and claimed that she was sinless and the mother of God and the spouse of God and the Queen of Heaven and Queen of the whole world. But the Bible would say otherwise about what Mary did.
QUESTIONS ABOUT MARY'S PERPETUAL VIRGINITY 1. Why did Matthew say at chapter one, verse twenty-five Mt 1:25, that Joseph: did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. - New Living Translation kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. - New American Standard Bible knew her not till she brought forth her first born son: and he called his name Jesus. - Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. - New International Version Until means “up to the time of.” It implies that an action did occur after a prescribed pause. Matthew did not end the sentence by saying, “He did not consummate their marriage.” He says, “He did not consummate their marriage until. . . .” This wording indicates that the action (of consummating the marriage) did occur after the birth of Christ. Matthew also makes a point of telling us that Joseph “took Mary home as his wife.” Matthew’s readers would naturally conclude that Mary became Joseph’s wife in every sense of the word. There is no scriptural evidence to support the assertion that Mary remained a perpetual virgin or that she had no other children. In fact, the Bible tells us the opposite. 2. Why did Luke describe Jesus as her “firstborn”? (Luke 2:7) And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke 2:7 Had Mary given birth to no other children would he not have referred to Jesus as her “only” son? Clearly Matthew and Luke did not consider that Jesus was Mary’s only son or they certainly would have emphasized the point; especially if they had thought this matter as vital as some religious organizations do. MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT JESUS' BROTHERS 1. BROTHERS WERE SONS OF JOSEPH FROM EARLIER MARRIAGE Some feel that Jesus’ brothers were actually sons of Joseph by an earlier marriage or Levirate marriage (brother-in-law marriage). However, the Bible shows that Jesus inherited the legal right to the kingship promised to David. (2 Samuel 7:12, 13; Luke 1:32) If Joseph had been father to sons older than Jesus, the eldest of these would have been Joseph’s legal heir according to the Law. 2. BROTHERS REFER TO JESUS' DISCIPLES Could the expression refer to Jesus’ disciples, or brothers? This idea conflicts with the Scriptures, since the Bible says that at one point “his brothers were, in fact, not exercising faith in him.” (John 7:5) The Bible distinguishes Jesus’ brothers from his disciples.-John 2:12. When, during Jesus’ ministry, “his brothers were, in fact, not exercising faith in him,” this would certainly rule out their being his brothers in a spiritual sense. (Joh 7:3-5) Jesus contrasted these fleshly brothers with his disciples, who believed in him and who were his spiritual brothers. (Mt 12:46-50; Mr 3:31-35; Lu 8:19-21) This lack of faith on the part of his fleshly brothers prohibits identifying them with apostles of the same names: James, Simon, Judas; they are explicitly distinguished from Jesus’ disciples.-Joh 2:12. That these “brothers” were separate and distinct from his disciples John’s record makes clear, for in it we read: “After this he [Jesus] and his mother and brothers AND his disciples went down to Capernaum.”-John 2:12, NW. 3. BROTHERS REFER TO COUSINS AND RELATIVES According to another theory, Jesus’ brothers were actually his cousins or relatives. Had mere kinsfolk been meant the inspired writers doubtless would have used the Greek word translated cousin and cousins at Luke 1:36, 58. (”Cousin” and “kinsfolks” in the Douay) Yet, the Greek Scriptures use distinct words for “brother,” “relative,” and “cousin.” (Luke 21:16; Colossians 4:10) In the Greek Scriptures or New Testament where the account involved a nephew or cousin, a·del·phosʹ is not used. Rather, the relationship is explained, as “the son of Paul’s sister” or “Mark the cousin [a·ne·psi·osʹ] of Barnabas.” (Ac 23:16; Col 4:10) In Luke 21:16, the Greek words syg·ge·nonʹ (relatives, such as cousins) and a·del·phonʹ (brothers) both occur, showing that the terms are not used loosely or indiscriminately in the Greek Scriptures. Had others than brothers or sisters been involved, Bible characters and Bible writers would have used the Greek word for “relatives,” namely, syggenon. Thus Jesus said: “A prophet is not unhonored except in his home territory and among his relatives and in his own house.” Clearly, here Jesus makes a distinction between “relatives” and those of one’s own house.-Mark 6:4. Jesus made the same distinction when he said: “When you spread a dinner or evening meal, do not call your friends or YOUR BROTHES OR YOUR RELATIVES or rich neighbors.”-Luke 14:12; 21:16. That Mary had other children also seems indicated by the incident that occurred when Jesus was twelve years old and Joseph took his family to Jerusalem for the festival. On the way back they had traveled a whole day before Mary noticed that Jesus was not with them. Had Jesus been her only child (and miraculously conceived at that), could we imagine her maternal instincts being so dormant that she would have started out without him and not missed him for a whole day? But if by this time she had six or more children by Joseph, we can imagine her having been so busy that she might not have missed Jesus for a whole day.-Luke 2:41-50. True, the question might be asked, If Mary had other children, why did Jesus entrust his mother to his apostle John instead of to her other children? For one thing, his other brothers may not have been at the site of his impalement, they apparently not yet having become believers. Also, of his disciples, John was closest to Jesus, and had a spiritual relationship with him that exceeded any natural relationship.-John 19:26, 27 Many Bible scholars acknowledge that Jesus’ brothers and sisters were his actual siblings. For example, The Expositor’s Bible Commentary states: “The most natural way to understand ‘brothers’ . . . is that the term refers to sons of Mary and Joseph and thus to brothers of Jesus on his mother’s side.” (See also The Gospel According to St. Mark, Second Edition, by Vincent Taylor, page 249, and A Marginal Jew-Rethinking the Historical Jesus, by John P. Meier, Volume 1, pages 331-332.) Yes, we do NO DISHONOR to Mary when we accept that she gave Joseph his marital due as a dutiful wife should and as a result had children besides Jesus. So, both reason and the Scriptures indicate that Jesus did have half brothers and half sisters.
I've often wondered why it is important to Catholics to regard Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a lifelong maiden. She was a married woman so it would not have been sinful for her to experience a marital relationship. Joseph , who had planned to give Mary a quiet divorce, was given a vision. He is described as a "just" man. All the angel had to tell him was that God commanded him to shelter Mary and the Child and he would have done that out of obedience. Yet, the message was the whole story- that The Holy Spirit was responsible for the Baby's conception. I have always thought that God's purpose in disclosing the fact to Joseph that his bride had not been unfaithful meant that He intended for Joseph to receive her as his wife.
catholicism has so many sexual undertones because it’s essentially celibate men as leaders suppressing themselves and expecting others to do the same. it’s no wonder why so many scandals came from the catholic church
If for two millenia innumerable holy souls have forfeited their sexual faculties for the sake of the glory of God can anyone reasonably posit that the Mother of God could do less?
This was clear, cogent, and refreshingly wide-ranging. Though a Calvin admirer, I did not know that he took the classic Catholic position on Mary's perpetual virginity as did Luther, Zwingli, and even more surprisingly, John Wesley in the 18th Century. Thank you for this, I shall recommend it to my Reformed brethren.

The issue of the Perpetual virginity of Mary has less to do with the doctrine itself as to the dogmatic exclusion of Christians who disagree with the doctrine from the Church. As a protestant, I tend to believe that she eventually consummated her marriage to Joseph after Jesus birth. Matthew 1:25 says that Joseph "knew her not until she had given birth to a son," but I also see no need to reject a person's Christianity and see them apostate or heretics if they believe she remained a virgin. The same with the Assumption of Mary. As a Protestant, I tend to think she probably was taken to Heaven at her death (or even before) -- otherwise, we probably would have a shrine to her tomb to this day -- but to make it a mandatory dogma of the church is a step too far. As a Protestant, I believe that no person should be refused communion with God's people based on secondary doctrines which can't be found in Scripture itself. Even if we accept the argument that there are traditions that were not included in Scripture that the Church becomes the witness of, they can't be Salvation necessary doctrines. And if someone is excluded from the one true church, it better be over damnable issues.
Joyce, please don't ever put anyone's opinion or teaching above the word of God. The Bible is perfect and sufficient as a foundation for our faith. God clearly tells us that the marriage was consummated after Jesus' birth. Read the gospels for yourself. (Matthew 1:25)

As a protestant, the best argument ive heard so far is that Mary's womb would have been symbolic of the holy of holies in the tabernacle. The one place where God dwelled on earth. A place so holy that, if you entered unworthy, you could be struck dead. Could anyone even fathom that place being used in such a way?
I never comment on anything but just wanted to ask how do you reconcile men portraying Mary as pure for her virginity and no discussion of women on the topic? I’m a professor and critical scholar and I have always wondered this because we know that men have forced women to see purity as virginity and I don’t feel that it’s equitable and has been pushed by many women critical scholars. Any thoughts on this? Is it just men throughout the ages defining what Good women are and in turn, holy women?
I'm not a priest or anything, but a good number of female Saints have been mothers (like Rita of Casia) or simply non-virgins, I recommend you to look it up. Also, chastity is highly valued on men too, think of Jesus Christ Himself.
So when the bible says all have sinned its lying? It realy meant to say all have sinned except mary or is there another scripture that shows mary was sinless? This part never made sence to me.

''Mary's perpetual sinlessness / the immaculate conception!'' That is also an unbiblical doctrine. Mary is never said to be sinless anywhere in the NT.

Lutheran here, who adheres to the historic Catholic (and historic Lutheran) position of Semper Virgo. Thank you for addressing this topic so thoughtfully and patiently. I actually really appreciated that Calvin quote, and I find it quite true of those, especially among Lutherans, who DO try to persistently argue against this teaching.
Here's my question--if Mary ended up having more children by her lawful husband Joseph, would believers think less of her? Otherwise, why is her state of virginity after birthing Jesus so hotly debated, unless it would demote her?
I didn’t even know people thought she was a virgin all her life until a couple years ago, the Bible repeatedly references Jesus’ brothers and sisters. But I haven’t watched the video yet so maybe you’ll explain that. I’m not a member of a church but am drawn to probably orthodoxy or Catholicism most. I do, however, know the Bible very well. @@LostArchivist oh my gosh..... I have so many! There are Catholic things, for instance, that seem hugely meaningful and I don’t even know why. This one also has to do with Mary. The Rosary to be specific. I used to roll my eyes at Catholics for “praying that repetitive nonsense” instead of just talking to God. And then I started praying it just to see. The mysteries open my heart. I actually bought four Rosaries, each specific to the four groupings. Why? Why should saying matter? Unless Mary is like God how can she even hear them all? And yet it pulls me into the life of Mary and of Christ in such a deep way and I DO feel heard. There are things like that that don’t even sound reasonable and yet .... Why do Catholics believe Mary can hear, care about, or in any way intervene on behalf of so many people without being Deity?
It is related to her being pure of sin, just as she was pure of virginity. You may say "Why does any of this matter" It's important to have a knowledge on things. Christ said that you need the FAITH of a child to enter Heaven. Not knowledge. That being said, you cannot have a faith, with little truth, you need the truth and facts to support it. There's a reason Christ taught when He was on Earth, then gave his teaching authority to the Apostles, then the Apostles to their successors and so on. Learning is important. If it didn't matter, Christ wouldn't have given teaching power to the Apostles.
@Anthony James not necessarily. It’s virginity when it’s A. Your calling. If you’re not called to be virgin (like being a father or mother) then it’s not admirable. It’s the opposite. Mary was special because she was married, and by every standard she had her full right to lose her virginity to Joseph, but she denied herself for God.
The Blessed Mother is and always be there for us. She is truly a Virgin and is our heavenly mother. Pray us Queen of Heaven and Earth. Your children need you more now than ever.

If mother Mary, is the choice of Abba Father to be mother of Jesus, then she is indeed "Special"
@Linda Lo in fact the scripture says "there is no queen of heaven" so when the catholic church says she is the queen of heaven are they saying the bible is wrong or are they saying something else?

@@sunflowerrayne6026 The reasoning that the Catholic Church gives for Mary being "Queen of Heaven" is because of the claim that it follows Davidic Tradition of the "Queen Mother" which was the original form of a queen in Israelite Culture. The Problem with that is it doesn't hold up in Scripture at all, and one would think that, with all 11 Apostles (after Judas obviously), the Gospels being written, Paul's Letters, and even Jesus Himself, there would've been some mention of her position had this been the case. Rather, Jesus took a moment in Luke 11:27 (As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and blessed are the breasts that nursed You!” 28But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”) Jesus had a PERFECT opportunity here to exalt Mary, or rather, reveal to others the position of "Queen of Heaven" as the Catholic Church has supposed. Jesus could've simply said "Yes" and that would've been it, but He didn't. Also, the "Queen of Heaven" in Jeremiah was referring to the false goddess Ishtar of Babylon, the supposed wife of the false god Ba'al. I'm happy to see that someone did their research and I'm happy that I'm doing mine. I was raised Catholic and for the longest time I held to these beliefs but then something happened. I opened my Bible, lol. I felt convicted by the Holy Spirit before that when trying to say the Hail Mary and so I stopped for a time, and then I started reading Scripture more and more and found nothing to support the claim, but rather found Scripture that pointed elsewhere (that is, Mary having not been a virgin perpetually). It is an ongoing journey and I'm open to discussion on either "side" so to speak, but the lack of understanding of Scripture on the Catholic "side" is extremely disheartening, but not surprising. But what truly disturbs me is that Mary has been referred to as a "mediator" by some, and as we know, Christ Jesus is our only Mediator between Man and God. So, as time goes on, and I see some people present biblical evidence to the contrary, it seems that many Catholics in their responses seem to only double down without any defense. Not all, but too many. Again, I am a Catholic and it disturbs me. In many cases it seems irrational, or at least it likens to when people just shake their heads when hearing something they don't like, but they cannot prove is untrue. So, again they double down. As someone who is a Catholic, but is re-examining doctrine, that is not a good representation of someone who knows what they believe. Again, I'm not judging or saying that ALL do this, but too many. I think people need to open their bibles like I did and THEN relate theological interpretation to Scripture and judge for themselves. Mary's constant virginity, or lack thereof, does not inhibit one's salvation in Christ Jesus in the slightest. God sent Jesus to save the world, not Mary. Thank you and I hope to hear, or read lol, what you have to say. I'm pleased to see someone in this thread that has a similar opinion/view as I do. Peace be with you and may God bless you in the Name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Exactly!!!! And we know by the Holy Scriptures that Our Lord revealed to 3 of his apostles his DIVINE and TRUE NATURE (Pure Light) during the TRANSFIGURATION.
The revelations of the Holiness of Mother Mary through Joseph's dream and the Heavenly intrusions at Jesus's birth would have impressed on St Joseph the regal spiritual status of his Holy wife. He would have lived in reverence of her and upheld his task of caring for the Holy Mother and Child rapturously.
Perhaps Father forgot to quote St. Thomas Aquinas. "We believe that just as the Mother of Jesus was a virgin, so was Joseph, because He placed the Virgin in the care of a virgin, and just as He did this at the close of His earthly life, so He did do it at the beginning (of His earthly life). If the Lord was unwilling to commend His Virgin Mother to the care of anyone except a virgin, how could He have borne the fact that her husband had not been a virgin and remained as such"
24 And Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she agave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. "Until".... Legacy Standard Bible (Three Sixteen Publishing, 2022), Mt 1:24-25.
I think you might be implying something that is not logically required. Just because they had no relations “until” she gave birth doesn’t logically conclude that they had relations after. It simply says none before. It’s like saying I never ate a single horse while I was a child. I haven’t eaten one as an adult either, so “while I was a child” doesn’t mean I started eating them as an adult.
@@BreakingInTheHabit Where does scripture support your claim then? I am extremely curious. Just because early church fathers had certain beliefs does not mean they are true..

Since Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant, how could childbirth take away her virginity? You know a broken hymen doesn't always equal loss of virginity, right?
To quote the council Father cited "Gave birth to him without corruption, equally inviolate after the birth". To say Mary was a Virgin during birth is to say she did not experience the normal labor pains associated with birth.

@@GazGuitarz well I'm a Catholic and I believe Mary is ever virgin. God's work is impossible for men like us. But I never ask you to believe what I believe. For sure you don't know about the dogmas of Catholic church. But are you a catholic? Read my comment. I said "also" which means there is someone else which I can see to follow God's will and He is Jesus himself. I didn't say Mary is the only example.
@@nabululeuria1891 Exactly. I also have the greatest admiration for Mary. I don't even mind calling her the Virgin Mary, because she was a virgin and gave birth to Messiah. However, scripture says nothing at all about her having any perpetual virginity. Matthew 1.25 in every version of the New Testament that I can find, including the Douay-Rheims Bible (translated from the Latin) states that Joseph did not have marital/sexual relationships with Mary until after Jesus was born. If they didn't have any sexual relationship post Jesus,, why would it be mentioned at all? Sexual relationships bring children and that fits with the Gospels account of Jesus' brotherrs and sisters. There is just no way around it unless you ignore scripture and decide that Church Fathers 400+ years later knew more than the apostles. Mary's perpetual virginity is first promoted by Jerome (a Church Father) some 400 years after Jesus ascended to heaven. There is no mention of perpetual virginity anywhere prior to Jerome. The Gospels were all well and truly written by the time of Jerome, so one would think that such an important doctrine would have been in the New Testament.

Question: Why do you (Catholics) want Mary to be a virgin? Listen to Mary's words: And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior." Mary admits that she needed a Saviour and that The Lord Jesus was her saviour,
We agree Mary needed a saviour. Inmaculate Conception dogma says she was preserved of sin by God's power and grace, Who reconciled her with Himself from the sin of Adam. If He hadn't, she would have need his forgiveness after sinning, and if refused, she would have ended in hell. We all desesperatelly need the Doctor: we simply believe one of us got the vaccine and the rest get the medicine. This said, virginity doesn't have anything to do with the Inmaculate Conception. I'm a virgin and still a sinner.
@@hisgroup3870 Yes, but Jesus isn't included either and that doesn't mean He was a sinner. If you want to explain a community how salvation works, you don't quote exceptions, much less when the exception is just one person set apart for an irrepetible and unique mission. It's the same with the old quote "sexual abstinence always avoid pregnancy". A lot of Christian biologists can say it every day and they're not denying virginal conception.

Sad, that from the very beginning the author is belittling the Bible, calling it a “pretty important foundation”. Why do some argue for Mary`s perpetual virginity? To make her like God. However, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"; “None is righteous, no, not one." Mary is not an exclusion here. Worshiping Mary contradicts what Jesus said, and puts Mary’s worshipers into danger of God`s wrath as it is a clear breach of the first commandment.
Catholics do not worship Mary but honor her and pray for her intercession just like when we ask our friends and relatives to pray for us, except unlike our friends and relatives Mary is right there with Jesus and has known Him for over 2000 years (possibly more). Mary is obviously in Heaven with Jesus and thus has eternal life. For the Elect, death is the first day of your real life and there is plenty of work to do! (Just ask the miracle-working saints who have "passed on" like St Charbel. 33000 miracles since his "death" and counting!) If Jesus would empower his apostles during their human lives with His power would He not also empower His mother (who loved and obeyed God her entire human life) to help glorify God during her eternal life? Is it not a commandment to honor thy father and mother? We saw at the wedding at Cana that Jesus listens to his mother. If she wanted to intercede on behalf of pleading humans in a way that is compatible with God's will, do you really think Jesus would deny her? Of course she is the greatest intercessor between humanity and Christ! Who else would it be? Never forget that no matter how much we love Mary, Jesus will always love her more! God bless you and I pray you will one day understand the incomprehensibly powerful nature of our Lord's infinite love, for both His mother and humanity, as well as the unfathomable depth of our Blessed Mother's love for both her son and humanity.
@@whatasdf "Jesus will always love her more"? Do you believe what Jesus said? Jesus called His mother twice 'Woman' (John 2:4, John 19:26-27). Jesus refused to go out to His mother and pointed to His disciples saying, 'Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother' (Matthew 12:48-50). Jesus refused to call His mother blessed by saying, 'Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it' (Luke 11:27-28).
I'm still not so sure While the evidence of Jesus' siblings being Joseph's offspring pre-Mary-marriage is very possible, it also doesn't mean Jesus didn't have siblings through Mary. Beyond that, Mary not having more children also doesn't mean she's still a virgin. It would only mean she didn't give birth again. From what I can tell, her perpetual virginity is not just "not in the Bible," it doesn't seem to really be discussed at all as an idea until a century or so before the early Middle ages. There just doesn't seem to be evidence beyond a tradition created at earliest like 350 A.D. whereas some of the copies of some of the cannon texts date earlier more like 100 A.D. It doesn't seem (to me) like this was part of oral tradition. It seems like it was spawned later, perhaps to make some point in a book or letter or something after anyone who knew more details of Mary's life would be dead, and it went unchallenged by many thereon. I'm not saying it's wrong. Just that I'm unconvinced. I don't know. I don't think it's necessarily that big of a deal as it doesn't like, contradict the Nicene creed or something like that if Mary didn't remain a virgin. I just think there's not enough evidence either way to make any claim, even if through faith
Roman Catholics are wrong about Mary because they believe that she was a forever Virgin and had Jesus as her only child and that she was sinless and was the mother of God queen of heaven and queen of the whole world when the Bible says otherwise. They also worship Mary like she’s a god or a goddess and think that she can hear their prayers and blessings and call her their mother and they choose her over Jesus and bow down to statues of her and kiss her feet or they would rub the statue of her stomach like rubbing the statue of Buddha.

If Mary had other children, why did Jesus tell Mary "Woman, behold your son" in John 19:26-27? Being raised as a Protestant, I can tell you the meaning of this passage was never reflected upon.
Jesus was her firstborn so with Joseph apparently gone he had the responsibility to care for his mother. His last act before he died was to make sure she was taken care of. Nothing about this touching scene indicates Mary had no other children. Matt. 13:56 and Mark 6:3 show Jesus had sisters as well.
Yes I thank you for this video and explanation!! So how do we defend when they keep quoting Mathew 1:25 ... About the word "knew" which means intimate in biblical language 🥺😕
I started listening to all this and I was skeptical so I went over to my bible and guess what....just in Matthew 1:25, it says that Joseph did not consummate their marriage *until* she gave birth to the son. This is very clear that there was a consummation of the marriage. It is right there in the bible. Matthew 1:25, I will applaude you if you can find a way to reinterprete this to have a different meaning other than what is in scripture. Many are making all sorts of arguments that sound reasonable but the bible speaks for itself. Sorry Friar but your whole video has been annulled by this one piece of scripture.

Bernard Bernstein - It certainly matters. Mary (being an innocent 13/14 year old girl), is said to have been a virgin to the day she died - even though she conceived by the Holy Spirit (remote artificial insemination) & she was chosen as a surrogate mother - to make it more understandable. Having other biological children is not acceptable even if she was married to Joseph because he was old & chosen by God to father and give stability to Mary & her baby - Jesus. Procreation between Joseph & Mary wasn't part of the divine plan, hence Mary did not at any time have sexual relations with an earthly being - therefore the children had to have been Joseph's from previous marriages or a previous partnership.
Fr. Casey, this is the first time I've been told there is/was some documentation of some sort - confirming Mary's virginity throughout her life on earth in what you have named the 'Proto Evangelium of James #8- 9'. (even though not officially widely accepted). @@marciecowan172 My attempt at explaining Mary's pregnancy is made perhaps not knowing 100% how these miraculous occurrences take place. The only way we could be close to 100% correct is if we could establish from Jesus' DNA if Mary's egg was used. My understanding - (correctly or incorrectly) is that one can be a surrogate mother by lending your womb: 1)using one of your own eggs *OR* lending your womb 2)with a fertilised egg from another male & female for the purposes of providing a natural environment for the ensuing embryo to flourish & grow to maturity. In case 1) Mary consented for her egg to be fertilised by the miraculous Divine *Spirit* of God without surrendering her virginity as an earthly woman. Hello Father Casey, Longtime listener, first time commenter (I'm a protestant btw)! I'm curious to know if you interacted at all with the work of Father John P. Meier. He is professor emeritus of the New Testament at Notre Dame. The work of Father Meier that I have in mind is his first volume of "A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus," in which he addresses all the points you brought up in your video (e.g., the protoevangelium of James, brother meaning cousin in the OT and etc.) and, imho, offers compelling arguments against the perpetual virginity of Mary (cf. 318-322). I will briefly list two points in particular that I found to be persuasive. First, there is a Greek word for cousin (ανεψιος) that is used in the NT by Paul in Col. 4:10. Given that Paul knows the word for cousin, why does he not call James in Gal. 1:19 τον ανεψιον του κυριου? The second point, although not as compelling as the first, is that if αδελφοι and αδελφαι in Matt 12:46-50 refer to cousins, should we then understand the following verse (Matt 12:50) as "for whoever does the will of my heavenly father is my male-cousin and female-cousin and mother." Wouldn't this reading sort of undermine the rhetorical point that Jesus is trying to make? Just a few thoughts. Blessings.
Eusebius in his History of the Church gave enough informations about the identity of the so called brothers of Jesus. They are not children of the virgin Mary! Jesus at 12 lost by his parents and found in the temple: It seems Mary and Joseph didn't have other child at that point of time, which is strange for a 12 years old marriage. It would be ridiculous to think that it is only after 12 years, they started to make a bunch of babies.

I like the idea that you said that Saints debated. They still do, Father! We're all on a journey to Heaven, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, and of course, St. Francis who made the first creche, pray for us....
For me, Mary's virginity after the birth of Jesus is akin to arguments about angels dancing on the head of a pin. It may be interesting to contemplate, but I don't see how it really matters one way or another. I mean, beyond the primacy of the teachings of the Church. Roman Catholicism is *so* focused on subjugating yourself to the teaching authority of the church. To their detriment, I would say.
Well, let’s say she stayed virgin or she didn’t. What would be the significance of these all in our salvation? I am catholic but just like to focus on Jesus alone. The virginity of Mary when she conceived was significant in order to know that Jesus was conceived through Holy Spirit. After that, if she got married and had children, it doesn’t make her less of mother of Jesus. So why do we need to argue about all that? As long as the Bible doesn’t say clearly, it is all about interpreting it in two different ways.
The perpetual Virginity and the Immaculate Conception are Critical dogmas for salvation. Mary had to be a Virgin to fulfill the Prophesy of Isaiah. Mary had to be conceived without original sin so that Jesus' human nature would be also conceived without original sin. Mary was Created just as God created Eve, without sin. And the Seed of the woman will crush Satan's head. If Mary wasn't a perpetual virgin conceived without original sin, the prophesies of the Old Testament would have not been fulfilled. And we now that they were so understanding the Marian dogmas is critical for salvation.
Whether or not she remained a virgin after giving birth to Jesus has no bearing on God's plan for our salvation. TBH, even if she did bore children after Jesus, I see nothing wrong with that. Afterall, *she is Joseph's wife.* Nothing wrong with a married couple having kids of their own.
Not unless she is the New Ark of the Covenant - that no one but the holiest of holies was allowed to touch. I was with you on your opinion until I heard it explained from this perspective.
@@blujeans9462 I agree, but that doesn't help those who believe that implies that women who give birth to children are somehow then less holy? The only verse that comes to mind, is when Paul states that women will be saved by the bearing of children. If Mary was already "pure", then she didn't require this. Was it a prevalent idea that because of Eve's sin, women ought to bear children, to be redeemed, because it is the judgement of God in Genesis? In which case, if Mary were born without original sin, she would not need to bear children. Again, just thinking aloud here...
@@LS-ei7xk Good points. In the end, does having children really help in our salvation. Many Catholic religious, of course, would disagree. :-) As brides of the Church their faithfulness is only to her. All others, should they decide marriage is their calling, then bringing new souls for God is a huge responsibility - and not without a lot of sacrifices. That is why the Church teaches us that our first responsibility is to raise them to love and honor God, first and foremost. Of course - they are born with free will - and may not follow your lead. As long as we did our best to form their foundation - I believe that is what Paul was referring to. But never stop praying for them - sometimes, when you least expect it, they come back to the fold!
Call me a heretic, but I find the idea of redemptive motherhood disgusting. Women are saved the same way men are. Motherhood is a good way to achieve holiness, but not the only nor the better way for anyone.
Interesting perspective. For me, I hear alot of men discussing fervently her status as 'unspoiled, 'intact' and I think the problem arises when you see her purely from this perspective. I would enjoy seeing more from you on the early female leaders of the church. We all know that Jesus left his church and witness in the hands of women, but it was men who overtook it.
If Jesus's "brothers" were actually cousins, and Joseph didn't have more than one wife, wouldn't he be the Virgin Joseph as well? I've never seen this anywhere in my (admittedly limited) studies, and never heard anyone refer to him as such. I think the idea that Joseph was married before or had more than one wife makes more sense. On the other hand, I don't think Mary's virginity after Jesus' birth is that big a deal. If she did have other children with Joseph, it would have been completely natural and not have been a sin.
We know little about St. Joseph, other that he was a just man There has always been speculation that he was widowed and had other children but nobody has ever been able to come up with documentation. An unmarried woman with a child would have been unacceptable in that society, in fact, she would have been stoned to death, so how could the Messiah survive? Mary had to have a husband. One who knew the whole story and who would be her protector. It is Catholic belief that St. Joseph was also virgin. "We believe that just as the Mother of Jesus was a virgin, so was Joseph, because He placed the Virgin in the care of a virgin, and just as He did this at the close of His earthly life, so He did do it at the beginning( of His earthly life ). If the Lord was unwilling to commend His Virgin Mother to the care of anyone except a virgin, how could He have borne the fact that her husband had not been a virgin and remained as such " ( St. Thomas Aquinas ) This refers to Jesus, from the cross, entrusting Our Lady to the care of St. John, as He had no brothers or sisters to care for His widowed mother.
It's more a question of sacredness: she was consecrated by carrying Jesus in her womb so another pregnancy would be like me using a sacred coup for drinking whiskey. So, if someone questions it, it feels like a desecration.
I wonder how you interpret Matth 1:25 where it says that Joseph didn't have intercourse with Mary before she had given birth to her son. Doesn't this implicate that he did have intercourse with her after she had given birth?
That's what I've always said. The church has a delusional obsession with Mary and for some reason decided to say that "Jesus' brothers were brothers" is heretical

I also learn just now,Jesus come out of the womb of mary as a shadow by the power of God the reason she did not lost her virginity that is the logic.

it's incredibly funny that even Calvin was like "why would anyone even question Mary's perpetual virginity??"
Because there is nothing to prove that. Blessed does not mean Holy and she was not ever sin-free. Jews were told to consummate the marriage just like Catholics are. They just did it a few months late.

Jesus called His mother, Mary "WOMAN": Nothing is impossible for a great Savior as God:" Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy," Jude 14.
"But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Mat. 19:26
Scipture tells us the angel said to the chosen WOMAN : "rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with thee".
If the WOMAN is full of grace, as the angel said. Is there place for sin? God can do it.
@@aslinndhan You're right. Probably it is because the generaly people are reluctant of the matter.

For example:
Genesis 6-7 we see: "At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made, and sent forth a raven; and it went to and fro UNTIL the waters were dried up from the earth." But we see that Raven stopped returning well before that. That's why Noah then sends out a dove to do the scouting.
1 Corinthians 15:25: ”For he (Christ) must reign UNTIL he has put all his enemies under his feet.” Does this mean that Jesus' reign will end? Of course not.
The commentary of the Church Fathers further supports this interpretation:
St. He will surely answer, Because of the Angel’s words, “That which is born in her” He then who gave so much heed to a vision as not to dare to touch his wife, would he, after he had heard the shepherds, seen the Magi, and known so many miracles, dare to approach the temple of God, the seat of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of his Lord?"
Just imagine you were in Joseph's position.

As we all call her "THE VIRGIN MERRY" but as i call her chosen one b'cuz she gave birth even when she is virgin BUT that doesn't mean she is just a host who gave birth to jesus and took care of him for years just to

That is not the general teaching of the Baptist Church. It must have been your specific church community/pastor that taught that
There is nothing special about her, she was a sinner just like the rest of us. There is only one who was special, or Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, praying to Mary will get you nowhere
@@marcusmoore5191 "There is nothing special about her..."
We agree that she was a sinner like the rest of us, but to say there was nothing special about her is going a bit overboard, Marcus.

The sanctuary 2 chronicles 30:8
The Nazirite vow judges 13:3-5
The offerings exodus 29:31-34
The priest exodus 29:1-9

Matthew 1:25 - Joseph did not have marital relations with her until she gave birth to a son
@@Alfredo8059LIES & Deception
Jesus had flesh siblings. Too bad you all want to make a Jewish Married lady a forever virgin.
"Your brother always does his homework"
"Your brother never gets speeding tickets"
" Your brother makes his bed every morning"
Get the picture?
I will never understand God's ways, so I don't try.
Also, tradition tells us that Mary had taken a vow of perpetual virginity, and that St. Joseph knew and respected that.
Social customs of the day would not accept an unmarried mother, even the mother of God, so the child Jesus had to be raised in what would appear to be an ordinary family.

If Mary had other children after Jesus then heretics would claim years later that Jesus came after she was no longer a virgin and that Jesus is not the Messiah. God preserved his OT ark of the covenant from profane use and there is no reason to think that he wouldn't do the same with his NT counterpart.
Virginity was not regarded as purity in a woman but poverty and not having children was regarded as a curse from God.

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. NKJV
A couple of things:
1) Calling cousins 'brothers' is far far more widespread than to Semitic languages.
And yet Jesus spent a lot of time with prostitutes sinners and those who were sick. I don't think Jesus avoided anything on earth that wasn't holy.
@@TheMoonSeesMe Oh of course. But that's the difference - He chose Mary because it pertained to His holiness, and He didn't avoid prostitutes and sinners because it pertained to their holiness.

I believe in what the Catholic Church teaches about Mary. But her virginity is not an issue to me personally.
@@GazGuitarz while that is true, why do we offer to pray for each other?
BTW venerate is not worship
@@mickyfrazer786 We pray for each other so that Jesus Christ will hear our prayer and intercede on our behalf to the Heavenly Father, who will grant (if it is his will) what we have prayed/asked for the other person, to manifest in their life. (which is scriptural)
It is not the same as prayer to the "Virgin" Mary in hope that she, being the mother of Jesus, will intercede upon our behalf to her Son, who will then be moved to intercede upon her behalf to the Father. (which is not scriptural)
Prayer to Saints and the "Virgin Mary" are not scripturally evidenced.
John 14:13-14
NKJV 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

As a Methodist, I remember all through my Sunday School classes, hearing that the reference to His brothers was possibly/likely as step-brothers, consistent with Wesley's belief
Honest question: Is it respectful to discuss whether or not God's Mother always remained a virgin? It really doesn't seem like anyone's business, and it just comes across as a little too weird. That's my take on the matter.
I do understand what you are saying but the problem is in what the Catholic Church has done in adding non biblical characteristics to Mary, coming only short of calling her a goodess although there are many catholics who do worship her.
1. She was never immaculately conceived (born sinless)

It's almost funny. There is NO Biblical requirement to source doctrine from Scripture. So the funny part if that you re using something you added to Scripture to complain against Catholics for adding something to Scripture. nd funnier still is that the inventor of Sola Scriptura disagrees with you and claims that Mary was Ever Virgin.

Well the biggest welth a woman has is vutginity,God take flesh and blood from her,God didnt want to takd that,so with a miracle way let her virgin.
As a catholic, I agree with you. Maybe she was maybe she wasn't.
I had my Protestant phase and while certain Catholic doctrines made more sense to me this was unnecessary in my eyes back then so I do get why you think that. I eventualy reverted back to Catholicism and it was clear in a "heureka" moment.

QUESTIONS ABOUT MARY'S PERPETUAL VIRGINITY
1. Why did Matthew say at chapter one, verse twenty-five Mt 1:25, that Joseph:
did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus. - New Living Translation
kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. - New American Standard Bible
knew her not till she brought forth her first born son: and he called his name Jesus. - Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible
did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. - New International Version
Until means “up to the time of.” It implies that an action did occur after a prescribed pause.
(Luke 2:7)
And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. - Luke 2:7
Had Mary given birth to no other children would he not have referred to Jesus as her “only” son? Clearly Matthew and Luke did not consider that Jesus was Mary’s only son or they certainly would have emphasized the point; especially if they had thought this matter as vital as some religious organizations do.
MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT JESUS' BROTHERS
1. BROTHERS WERE SONS OF JOSEPH FROM EARLIER MARRIAGE
Some feel that Jesus’ brothers were actually sons of Joseph by an earlier marriage or Levirate marriage (brother-in-law marriage). However, the Bible shows that Jesus inherited the legal right to the kingship promised to David. (2 Samuel 7:12, 13; Luke 1:32) If Joseph had been father to sons older than Jesus, the eldest of these would have been Joseph’s legal heir according to the Law.
2. BROTHERS REFER TO JESUS' DISCIPLES
Could the expression refer to Jesus’ disciples, or brothers?
3. BROTHERS REFER TO COUSINS AND RELATIVES
According to another theory, Jesus’ brothers were actually his cousins or relatives. Had mere kinsfolk been meant the inspired writers doubtless would have used the Greek word translated cousin and cousins at Luke 1:36, 58. (”Cousin” and “kinsfolks” in the Douay) Yet, the Greek Scriptures use distinct words for “brother,” “relative,” and “cousin.” (Luke 21:16; Colossians 4:10)
In the Greek Scriptures or New Testament where the account involved a nephew or cousin, a·del·phosʹ is not used.
Also, of his disciples, John was closest to Jesus, and had a spiritual relationship with him that exceeded any natural relationship.-John 19:26, 27
Many Bible scholars acknowledge that Jesus’ brothers and sisters were his actual siblings. Meier, Volume 1, pages 331-332.)
Yes, we do NO DISHONOR to Mary when we accept that she gave Joseph his marital due as a dutiful wife should and as a result had children besides Jesus.

Why do we care if she was a virgin after the birth of Jesus? It doesn’t matter. It’s kinda weird how obsessed Christians are about virginity...
So what's your point?
It is related to her being pure of sin, just as she was pure of virginity.
You may say "Why does any of this matter"
It's important to have a knowledge on things.

@Linda Lo in fact the scripture says "there is no queen of heaven" so when the catholic church says she is the queen of heaven are they saying the bible is wrong or are they saying something else?

Where does scripture say there is no queen of heaven?

Jeremiah 7:17-18, KJV
The only time anyone is refered to as queen of heaven its not for a good reason. Anyways how can mary be the queen of heaven if she is not Gods wife? He is the King.
Rather, Jesus took a moment in
Luke 11:27 (As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and blessed are the breasts that nursed You!” 28But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”)
Jesus had a PERFECT opportunity here to exalt Mary, or rather, reveal to others the position of "Queen of Heaven" as the Catholic Church has supposed.
Good arguments. I'm convinced! This channel is great!
Did you hear the beginning part where he says the Bible isn't the only source of God's truth?
What do you think about this?
Jesus, was often referred to as the Light of the world. Light, by it's nature does not break things, but passes through things without breakage.

Since Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant, how could childbirth take away her virginity? You know a broken hymen doesn't always equal loss of virginity, right?

Listen to Mary's words: And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."
Mary admits that she needed a Saviour and that The Lord Jesus was her saviour,
We agree Mary needed a saviour.

I'm still not so sure
While the evidence of Jesus' siblings being Joseph's offspring pre-Mary-marriage is very possible, it also doesn't mean Jesus didn't have siblings through Mary.

The answer to this question in one word:
Yes.
I'm sure most Catholics have never heard about this piece of James' works. 😊Is this made up or was it really hidden/written in the 2nd century (120 AD) in a? gospel?

My understanding - (correctly or incorrectly) is that one can be a surrogate mother by lending your womb:

2)with a fertilised egg from another male & female
for the purposes of providing a natural environment for the ensuing embryo to flourish & grow to maturity.
In case 1) Mary consented for her egg to be fertilised by the miraculous Divine *Spirit* of God without surrendering her virginity as an earthly woman. Bearing in mind - NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD. This is my understanding in view of our increased knowledge in obstetrics today.
@@patthompson8591 I read somewhere that it was written by some early Christian(s) in an attempt to "explain " Mary's perpetual virginity, and was therefore not considered "canonical ", which is why it's not in the Bible. However, there are some religious artworks that portray St. Joseph as an old man, so there was some belief in this theory. But, ultimately, this theory is considered a false teaching, because the arduous journey the Holy Family made to Egypt would have been too much for an elderly man.
😍Mary the immaculate Conception
The immaculate conception kind of contradicts that Jesus was the only human without sin... (Im not anti Catholic i just don’t agree with that dogma)

@@SoldierOfGod778 if mary was a sinner how will u justify that jesus is God, can jesus have the blood of a sinner? Can jesus live and have a blood be educated by someone who is the slave of the Devil? Think 🤔
This is a good video, but it would have been complete if it had examined one of the verses that gave rise to groups rejecting Mother Mary's perpetual virginity: Matthew 1: 24-25: “When Joseph awoke; he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her UNTIL she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.“

Did not Jesus have a half brother named James, who was the chief spokesman for the Apostles at the Counsel at Jerusalem in 51 A.D.?
There were two apostles called James. One was the brother of St. John, and they were the sons of Zebedee and Salome.
The other James was younger, and usually called James the Less. His father was Cleophas and his mother, Mary, was a close relative of Mary the mother of Jesus, (possibly even a sister).
This James is often called the brother of Jesus.
James the Less is considered to be the first Bishop of Jerusalem.
He was killed by being beaten to death in A.D 62
Thank you Father, your response to this issue is very enlightening..
Hello Father Casey,
Longtime listener, first time commenter (I'm a protestant btw)!
Blessings.
Mary and Joseph made a vow of virginity before they even met. Read "The Mystical City of God" by Maria of Agreda
Connie Aguayo Amazing book
And Maria of Agreda knew this how? Let me guess...a vision? a dream?
Eusebius in his History of the Church gave enough informations about the identity of the so called brothers of Jesus. They are not children of the virgin Mary!
Jesus at 12 lost by his parents and found in the temple: It seems Mary and Joseph didn't have other child at that point of time, which is strange for a 12 years old marriage. It would be ridiculous to think that it is only after 12 years, they started to make a bunch of babies.
It matters not if they had children or not. There is nothing anywhere that says she was forever a virgin.
@@bcalvert321 There is nothing anywhere that says Joseph died before the public ministry of Jesus !
And there is nothing anywhere that says she was not a virgin forever!
This is where typology comes out!
@@hervedavidh4117 Sorry but as many say on here the proof are those with the belief. There is nothing in the Bible saying she was always a virgin. If Joseph had lived while Jesus was doing His ministry there would have been an account of that. Most Bible scholars believe this.
@@bcalvert321 The Argument of silence cut both ways. There was nothing on the Bible saying she was not a perpetual virgin. So the belief of first christian communities is important in the case.
If christians during the first centuries of christianity believed she was a perpetual virgin, why should we believe the contrary? (Even Luther believed Mary was a perpetual virgin).
@@hervedavidh4117 I don't care what Luther believed. Catholics are bid on tradition. So were the Jews at the time of Christ. One of those traditions was 1, to consummate the marriage, and 2, to have a lot of children. The angel never said she could not have other children. Catholics are putting things into scripture what is not there. What first Christ communities are those, 100 years after she died?
There’s no question. Accepted until the revolt.
I can't think of a way that it would affect our salvation because our salvation is through Jesus, not Mary.
Got it! Thank you Fr. Casey!
The ark of the new covenant 4:17-20
The sanctuary 2 chronicles 30:8
The Nazirite vow judges 13:3-5
The offerings exodus 29:31-34
The priest exodus 29:1-9
Jerome and Augustin didn't get along. I think that sequel is coming :D
They've already reconciled.
@@blujeans9462 : so much for Matthew 19: 6 then... poor Joseph.... 😥😥😥😥
You really should try to look at the Bible through first century lenses instead of 21st century lenses.
Best commentary on this matter that I have ever seen. Many thanks.
Joseph, other that he was a just man
There has always been speculation that he was widowed and had other children but nobody has ever been able to come up with documentation.
If the Lord was unwilling to commend His Virgin Mother to the care of anyone except a virgin, how could He have borne the fact that her husband had not been a virgin and remained as such "
( St. Thomas Aquinas )
This refers to Jesus, from the cross, entrusting Our Lady to the care of St. John, as He had no brothers or sisters to care for His widowed mother.
This episode could be called "brother from another mother"
So....why does it even matter whether or not Mary was a perpetual virgin?
It's more a question of sacredness: she was consecrated by carrying Jesus in her womb so another pregnancy would be like me using a sacred coup for drinking whiskey. So, if someone questions it, it feels like a desecration.
It matters because it's the truth. That's why it's an article of Catholic doctrine.
No, it doesn't
I don’t understand what difference it makes whether Mary was ever virgin or not. Am I missing something?
