I can remember these locos during the 60's. They were used in tandem on the 'Condor' freight service. I had my lunch in the cab of D5703 in Derby works at the Open Day.
I remember seeing a couple from our car "belting up" the WCML between Preston and Lancaster in the late 1960's on the stretch were it runs alongside the M6. A sight to behold.
The Metrovic really looks great. Impressive work! The 50 sounds good too. It is almost like you can hear individual cylinders exhaust at this speed/load.
Nice Phil, I remember these Crossleys as we called them, passing along the ex Midland Line through Hazel Grove with a "V" of exhaust smoke accompanying them .They were quite often in pairs and sounded "different" .Then we found out why, they were two strokes . Nostalgia here ! Thanks , Ian 👍👍😊😊
Nice video Phil ,lovely to see this dinosaur ,saw her a few times back in the day ,Danygraig,Bristol,Swindon,Matlock ,,would have thought they would have had her running by now as ex Barry steam hulks and new build (A1) have been restored/built in less than the time this old gal has been preserved .Still she is preserved and that is what matters.
how far off is it the metrovic off being finished as if they're shoving it about by hoovers & crampons it must be getting closer to the day it runs under it's own power!
I remember this Met Vic in the late 70's when it was at Bristol Bath Road diesel depot (long gone now), Then I never heard it run, would be superb if the lads got this one going again, Good Luck to you all.
Will be great to see this running under it's own power eventually. Along with the class 15 to. Be good to have a gathering of the 15,17,23 & 28 together.....when all runners at the same time.
The restoration project is taking forever... this sole survivor needs all the help it can get so it can thrive in today's world alongside other legends!
I like the idea of a Railway Series fanfiction story where CoBo (D5705) joins BoCo on Sodor and the 2 Metropolitan Vickers diesels get their revenge on Bill & Ben🙂
Now that was quite a surprise highlight, especially to check out that one & only remaining class 28 co-bo type two locomotive make an appearance, even with the helping assistance of some heritage diesel traction in motive action out there.
I well remember them, usually double headed hauling the Condor, which used to pass through Market Harborough late evening if my memory serves me right.
I am not old enough to remember them in service but the real life one does seem to sit rather high on its bogies just like a Hornby model from the sixties.
A great restoration job these folks have done already, it will be the culmination of the work when the locomotive runs under it's own power again in working preservation, at long last. 😀👍
I saw four of these undergoing maintenance at Crewe Works in 1964. I won't repeat what the fitters there had to say about them! I think they had wrap around windows as originally built.
I remember seeing that languishing deep in the shed at Bristol Bath Road, back in the late 1970's under a TDB departmental number, which eludes me now. She didnt look as good as she does now, obviously.
I never saw one of these in proper service, but I do remember being at Bristol Temple Meads looking into the sidings at Bath Road depot. There was this odd-looking loco there that I didn't recognise. Binoculars out to try to get some details. Looks like it's a Co-Co. Oh no, hang on, it's two axles must be a Bo-Bo. Oh no, hang on.... It's actually Co-Bo. Never heard of such a thing. (It turns out it was being used to warm carriages prior to service, so the engine was running even if it didn't move)

If only one loco could be preserved, a hoover or the metro vick, surely the only choice would be the 50, the 50 the 50. But with the EE type 4, and other classes well represented in preservation, it is fantastic that this example of a less successful early diesel class has made it into preservation. Absolute respect to those who have brought the co bo to this condition: can’t wait to see it as a working loco , a ‘high days and holidays special’ perhaps.
Great video of the sole surviving Cobo locomotive D5705 one thing I have noticed in this video and other videos and pictures that there seems to be 4 exhaust ports on the roof i assume that the larger rectangular 2 ports are the exhaust ports and the 2 smaller round whole ports were exhaust ports too unless they were former exhaust ports of the steam heating boiler it once carried i have often wondered about this as i am aware that it has a Crossley HSTV8 power unit albeit not in working order can anyone shed any light on this i would be interested to find out 😊
Absolutely great to see it moving. Can't wait until it's under it's own power but.....in the meantime stick it on the front and push a train from the rear
Yes for the photographic opportunity alone propel the co-bo with a rake of half a dozen maroon coaches and it would make for a great nostalgic scene. Even better if the power unit is reinstated!
"Unusual" is the word - Crossley 2 stroke needed modification within 3 years of being new in 1958. Saw one through Adlington, Lancs in 1961 running in on a Blackpool service. Looks right in this video - colour/paintwork.
Lol. Should be a black 5 or something moving it about like in the days they were 'in service' and failing all the time. Oh not forgetting the pyrotechnics. Its all to easy to forget how bad the CoBos were but im still looking forward to seeing it run.
I remember they were a failure, that’s why they were withdrawn early, they had teething troubles, won’t it still have those problems if it still uses its original engine?
@@philclarke3203 Bill & Ben's real life basis from the Port of Par in Cornwall. Their low height cabs were so they could fit under a low bridge under the main line!
I quite like their rather sad "expression" . I only ever saw one but remember the sound belied its puny capacity. It will take a monumental effort to get it and keep it running. Not even the vast resources of BR or latterly Derby Research Centre were able to do that!
No, it was just in the bay platform for display at the gala. It had to go in the other platforms in order to be shunted in there and then back out and into yard.
Coincidentally enough, there was a plan for the Class 28's to have an uprated EE 8SVT (or an 8CSVT), only for them to forget about it afterwards and then scrap all of them (but one).
I seriously do actually under no circumstances personally think that BoCo the metropolitan-vicars diesel-electric type 2 class 28 locomotive himself certainly would basically be very considerably proud of his own officially uniquely sole-serving brother despite the officially obvious fact that he certainly WON'T even be running under his own official power anytime soon, but nonetheless it's basically quite good to happily hear that it's good to officially @ least have exactly 1 of his own official brothers around to this official day!
They may have been a better performing loco if not doomed by a bad engine. The Crossley standby diesel engines at my power station also failed and had to be replaced by Allen diesel engines (much more reliable). Crossley later abandoned their own designs and produced Pielstick engines (French) under licence. I think the loco is one of the ugliest designs ever made, along with the class 70. Needless to say, this video flooded my brain with nostalgia.

It is a fascinating loco.
This is an incredible restoration project. Well done for all those involved.
