- I've been on holiday in the North of England and Wales and have been driving around in a new BMW 320i. Here's why I think you probably shouldn't buy one.

I’ve had a 320i 69 plate for four months now. Excellent car. Acceleration is impressive.
How can you complain about the engine being too weak when you literally have the option of choosing a more powerful 330i, 330E or 330D? Also this is a fuel efficient 2L petrol which does 0-60 in 7 seconds, that's better than most cars on the road and you would have no issues overtaking upto 70mph........ Also the diesel feels quicker doesn't mean it will overtake any better, the 0-60 is basically the same, how is this a valid point in terms of function?

M sport trim is merely cosmetic upgrades over the sport and SE versions; exterior styling on lower front and rear bumpers, side skirts, larger alloys, sports seats with leather as standard, and M steering wheel and door sills.

You’re right in everything being subjective. I’m on the other side. I’ve always shied away from the 3 Series because of the looks. However, when in the dealer having my car serviced, I had a good look around a 320i Sport and fell in love. So much so that as soon as possible, I am ordering a Touring in Black.
Finally, BMW have realised that us petrolheads love twin exhausts. I bet they are selling more Sport’s now because of it. Who needs an MSport when these look this good?
Added to this that I’m hearing elsewhere that it feels more refined and it sealed the deal for me. 🤣😂 I’ve heard others say it feels 5 Series’ish and I can now have that but a shrink wrapped version.

Just 2 points on your review. when you say the 320i just didn't have enough power when overtaking, what Driving Mode and Gearbox mode was the car in? you really need to have the gearbox in the S (SPORT) selected if driving in Comfort Mode, or have one of 3 the actual Sport Mode settings selected, that will automatically configure the gearbox for you and in Sport Individual Mode you can configure that setting further via the IDrive. I'm sure you will find acceleration you want if you have the car set up correctly. I've driven the new 3 Series 320i for a few months now and think it has awesome power when needed. I admit there are faster cars but the 320i will have all the power you need for everyday driving.2nd Point. The last 3 Series (F30) wasn't great car in build quality very cheap plastics and lots of rattles and squeaks in them. The biggest issues with the 320D version was the N47 engine that was fitted to in them. It has a known issue with the timing chain and tensioner failing resulting in very expensive repairs if the car has no warranty with a main dealer.I would suggest people who want the new 3 Series go and have alook at them, rent one out for a few days with all the tech fitted now you will see a massive improvement in quality and I feel buying an F30 is a big backwards step.
flyboy747 uk although you are correct when pointing out that sport mode setting is needed for better performance, every day driver use comfort mode all time. Sometimes when you need a bit extra do not have time to find the button and select the sport driving mode. What i do find quicker is to shift the gear selector to S (sport) and the car awakes and give that little "extra" by extending rpms.

I can assure you it wasn’t, I had a brand new 320D 12 plate and had to have timing chain work done at 11,000 miles which is a massive job on the N47engine. Out of warranty repair at a dealership would cost at lest £2000 back then as it’s a weeks work whole engine has to be taken out. Whilst mine was being repaired there was another 12 plate sat next to it having the same work done. So not ranting at all just telling you how it really is.
Nice one. Good to hear you've enjoyed good 'ol Blighty. More importantly, a very interesting observation about the new 3 series. As you said, much is subjective but I still think both valid and worth bearing in mind if in the market for a 3 series. Splendid work 👍

184 not enough for overtaking... True, this is not an M car but it has more power than 90% of cars you encounter on the road, I'm sure they somehow manage to deal with overtaking.
I wonder at what speed he was trying to overtake in order to run out of power lol
@@michlep258 anything above 70 (kph) my car is rated 200hp and it has 0 acceleration in any gear other than first. or at least it feels like it.
I think most cars have more than 184 nowadays
Odd. My 120i (same b48 engine) redlines at 6,800RPM. It does run out of puff at 5k or so, as it is held back by the factory mapping, which forces a throttle closure at 5k +, irrespective of pedal position. That is partly how they differentiate between the 320i and 330i; the latter is certainly the one to go for if you are kind of person who even thinks about where their redline is...
I hate the speed o meter. It works backwards. Drives me nuts.
Absolutely agree North Wales is fantastic I spent 3 days exploring, probably passed you in my fiesta st lol. Lake vyanmy... Absolutely stunning difficult to get to though the st is perfectly suited to the roads.
I'll be honest I'm not keen on BMW always over priced I think maybe outside my price range.

Its built on the 5 series architecture it is stiffer, faster, better suspension. It is bigger, lower centre of gravity. It is quiet and yes a perfect drive which like the 4 series makes it feel a bit boring and detached from the driver. If you are testing M cars it will feel boring. The new 330E is very good while it has the electric boost. If you want to feel the driving experience the M135i but that also has less driver feel than the 140i or the 240i which they have stopped making as it was faster than the M2 by mistake.(They corrected that issue after 12months)
Too refined?
I think the problem with BMW is, excluding the crazy power ones, they’ve gradually refined the soul out of some of their best selling cars, not to mention sold it by having those GT monstrosities. Kind of like how Phil Spector over produced the Let it Be album. Just for the hat 👍🏼

They were once the "Ultimate Driving Machine" and always lived up to that, especially the 3 series. Now the Alfa Giulia is absolutely telepathic in its driving experience. Reminds one of older BMWs. New ones are great but they've lost that edge. It's like they are a typical German knife, whereas the Alfa is Japanese steel, much sharper edge and more delicate driving. Sad that's this has happened. But once BMW went to AWD and even FWD from all RWD they've lost their touch.
Interesting point, perhaps the Alpha is worth a test drive. The Veloce is a particularly nice output, looks to be the sweet spot in the range, a bit quicker than a 330i, by a smidge.
@@Fhrivneoauf def worth a drive! Not sure where you are but in Oz we have 3 models, each with more power. The Veloce here is pretty cheap as well, and def has more pull than the 330i. Have a GTAm ordered, with no change from $300k but worth ever cent....will keep it until I die.
Do you get rental insurance every time you rent a car? I watched a video from someone else where he said he never does, but then he got burnt on curbing a wheel.
Yes I get the full insurance. It's normally more than the cost of the rental itself but it brings peace of mind!
Car looks very comfy but how did you find the rev counter going backwards? My recent hire car had it too and I found it really weird! (Do I win a baseball cap 😎). Roof down weather here in Cumbria 😁😁😎😎

@@FezzaYT totally agree. Happy to report the dials on my Audi all go the correct way 😎 I'm looking to replace it soon but the 2016 A4s seem to have an iPod stuck on the dash which really puts me off.

I do like your videos, but I wish you still had the RS. But I guess you had to move on at some point. Just one question though. Do you miss the RS compared to what you've been driving recently ?
Hey John. I had it for 3 years....just need to wait for the MK4 now ;) When I see one on the road I do miss it....but I like to try different cars out.

We didn't get the latest digital dash for 320i in Malaysia. So sad

You can't really compare a clatter clatter tractor engine with a silky smooth petrol.
330i seems to be the sweet spot. Much more performance for only slightly more money, virtually identical running costs to the 320i.
8k€ isnt slightly more money..thats 1/6 of the cars price + anyone paying for the 330i and not paying for an LSD on top of it should be shot on the spot at the dealership :D

Well I must disagree, previous gen looked cheap, and also felt cheap inside, this one on the other hand looks more premium.
It's certainly more premium but the previous generation was really good. I never felt disappointed driving one.
The G20 represents a notable improvement over the F30 in terms of design, technology, materials, and an enhanced sense of premium quality.

North Wales - That's very close to HubNut country! Pretty much the polar opposite to your car history, but equally watchable. Both of you always have something thoughtful and interesting to say about cars. HubNut in an M4 and Fezza in a 2CV would have been a great crossover / colab ;)
Spot on with your observations on the 320i. This seems to be the fate of all medium sized cars right now. Impersonal, bland, characterless. Utterly efficient and competent, evolved into the John Major of transport. With the move to hybrids I suspect it may well get even worse. Being an X-Drive (4WD) version wouldn't have helped the power delivery but 180bhp really should feel better than that. Glad you enjoyed our 16C of damp overcast weather ;)

We always try and go in August to get away from the heat in Spain. August is an awful month here with the heat and it's so busy with tourists. Best time to go away :)

Don't look at the side view for too long, once you see that the rear door handle is higher than the one on the front you can't un-see it.

Justin followed you all through your RS experience which was riveting. Watched a couple of your first vlogs with Victoria and it just aint as good. maybe the shines gone because no common interest but I find Victoria unwatchable from a car vlog angle.
Hi Stephen. It takes time for things to develop. I did some awful videos before the RS videos as I experimented with different ideas and directions. Things change and I appreciate that not everyone will like how things progress. I do TH-cam for a bit of fun....if people chose to view the videos then that's just a bonus :)
I can tell the same just by looking at it :) BMW has played it well, now you need an 330i to make it as satisfying as the previous generation (F30) ;) Nevetheless, the G20 IS an amazing car.
The 320i (F30) and 320i (G20) have the exact same engine with the exact same hp ... what are you on about ?

Never noticed than in the 1 Series. Seems odd in a modern car these days not to have them
Talkin about the exterior design Sir.....
(1)That 320i has just entry level rims & no M Sport kit...
(2)If you add the M sport rims, spoiler, grille & a bit of side skirts, that car looks drop dead gorgeous!
(3)The F30 design is aging now...been around for like 9 years or somethin.....but with it's M performance kit, it because a nowadays car........The G20 is such a beauty, inside-out.....Simplicity at its best.
So the problem with this car according to you is that its too good? Previous generation diesel will be out of plan and diesel are very expensive to maintain and trust me they do need maintenance
So stop telling people to buy old diesel out of plan,

My Ford Mondeo is better than this BMW and its cheaper, it has auto parking, reverse camera, big alloys, sporty looks,. Don’t waste money buying a BMW.

Entitled to an opinion and one that was presented rather clumsily!
Idiotic review. Last car was fantastic, this one has been refined and slightly improved in all areas, and now it's "too good". Yep - it needs the higher powered 2.0 engine, yes, the 330 should come with X-Drive (which is why I wouldn't buy one) but I find it hard to believe you rather than the almost unanimous acclamation elsewhere. Oh, and the M-Sport only comes in 3 colours. Pathetic.
I don't know what an "Infiniti" is and the only Hyundai in that size or class - the i40 - has been discontinued in Europe and several other markets. If you could tailor the commentary to relevant markets where the 320i is sold (which does not include North America obvs) that would be better still.
Just no bmw interiors and exteriors are horrible bring back the 80s and 90s
