Some sets in this video were my favourites as a kid... I loved them... and I still do For example the Lion Knights castle of the kingdoms era... Love it so much
I take issue with your opinion of the 2013 King's Castle, specifically the use of windowed pieces. All of the classic castles like Black Falcon's Fortress, Black Monarch's Castle, etc. used window pieces to build their walls, and these are some of the most beloved castles around. I do agree the lion heraldry is way over used. That's why I'm a Black Knights fan.
The 2013 Castle is also the only modular Lego Castle. It gets hated on by those that don't own it, but if you DO own it you know it's actually pretty good
I loved the knights kingdom 2 action figures growing up and i was definitely the target audience! I remember being in legoland as a kid getting the rubber mask and sword inspired by the theme and playing knights with my friends on the castle. I think I actually have all the action figures from all 3 waves but only 2 or 3 bionical figs. The system sets were great to same vibe as early ninjago.. I even have the board game xD GOAT CASTLE THEME
1:07 while most of the royal knights were trash the torso for the king was pretty good and it kinda reminds me of the Kingdoms lions with the white and red split. I use them as a sub faction for the Red Kingdom lions and they work pretty good
I think it was smart for Lego to reuse torsos from Vikings and crown knights because the beards cover them up. But it would have been cool if they had unique torsos!
Yes, many of those sets have lacklustre builds, but the thing to remember is that lego in the 90s wasn't really about display sets like it is now. Sets from that era were often more play focused creating an impression of a building but putting the focus on cool play features and leaving the build open and accessible. You also weren't supposed to just build what was on the box, all tge instructions came with multiple alternative designs, and everyone I knew took things apart, mixed up the sets and built their own castles with them. The sets were more like battle packs, a source or castle pieces for your own mocs, rather than modular buildings to add to a castle layout.
The blue lions castle, I grew up with it. Together with all the others it was great, really great. You had a tower before it, and than the castle. It had soo much space and some really nice play functions. I love it❤
Even in the worst sets there is something of value. I'd love to see a series where you take the parts list of the horrible sets and redesign/update them with new pieces. That way we could see what might have been had Lego not failed the first time.
Bruh just say that knights kingdoms 2 was one of the worst castle theme bro those set where goated if we didn’t have that waves we would not have gotten castles fantasy, also I loved the knights figures, still good video 👍
The 2013 Lion Knight minifigures are, in my opinion, extremely visually appealing, and I'm confused as to how their shield is ugly... The colors and shapes look great.
I would like to point out that set 1906 Majisto’s Tower was only released in North America. Similar sets for other themes such as Pirates or Western were exclusively launched for North America - most of them had in common that they felt like a mixture and re-use of parts of the "real" sets, that were availably globally. Given the fact also, that during these years most of the revenue for Lego came from Europe (which has only changed since around Corona) I think it is a stretch to consider this set as indicative of the Dragon Knights theme. Sorry for nerding out a bit over this ^^
A video about the elf kingdom would be great. The parts from the 2 fantasy elves are great for it and the Christmas elf boy and girl hats with the torso of that forest boy cmf look great then bows from lord of the rings or just regular bows look cool. Those golden daggers look cool with them too!😊🧝♂️
Solid video. Not sure why people complain about "juniorisation" of castle sets in the 90s. The ones from the 80s and 2000s used just as many large molded panels. Black Falcon's Fortress is a childhood favorite of mine, but the structure is primarily composed of the 2x5x6 walls and 3x3x6 corners. Using big parts is the only way to keep castles affordable. Otherwise we end up with the current problem of only very expensive castle sets. The civilian sets like mill village raid and medieval market village are the best things they have ever made.
I grew up in the times of large castle wall pieces, so I’ve never minded them. And they allowed young builders to easily “create” their own castles and feel a fun sense of pride and accomplishment.
I have a small army of the red falcon knights form the 2022 PAB, any ideas on how to increase the size of my army without buying any more of the original torsos? Great video!
ooo nice i've got about 11 or so myself. I haven't tried to make any custom ones yet but you could maybe try using some plain torsos with red arms and then give them a silver chestplate piece.
lol, I genuinely love watching a video that I disagree with so much! I am with you on the reuse of the lion factions, which is something that was strange in the Royal Knights but became a problem in Knights Kingdom 1, personally. I also agree that the Dragon Knights is mostly where Lego Castle lost its touch, almost everything released before that being a nearly perfect set for me, but Majisto's Tower is the one Dragon Masters set that I actually do love, I think out of that oldheadedness where it preserves the mystery of the Castle world, there is not a live dragon shown explicitly, only a wizard and the iconography of dragons. I won't defend Castle 2013 as I do think it is the worst of the sets in this video, but will go to bat for the Knight's Kingdom II figures entirely out of my own nostalgia! Jayko 8771 was the first Lego set I ever had, and started this horrible lifelong obsession. Finally, to me the Dwarves are the only appealing faction from Fantasy Era, I just can't help but love the tone of their set and they deliver on the promise that I feel like Vikings failed in, having ridiculous giant decorated beards! Always enjoy your videos, from the perspective of a vintage Castle fan :)
Hey! thank you so much. I actually found myself agreeing with much of what you said. I think knights kingdom 2 gets a bit of a bad rap for it's early wave 1 sets. I think it really started to come into it's own at the end and even some of the rogue (naked) knights had some cool builds
Maybe it's for my child memories but, honestly, the witch's magic manor is not that bad, it's not a manor, for sure, but it was cool to have a different scenario for the adventures, it was like a battle between rocky mointains 😅
Just wanted to say, first off I like the royal knights logo because it's very iconic from my childhood, second I totally thought you where going to sum up knights kingdom as ninjago but knights, third thing is I think the elves and dwarfs are on the same side in the Castle fantasy era universe but if they did include the elves it be cool to see them fight maybe summoned rock monsters.
One of the best things about Lego is the experience of assembling a set. I lost interest in the early to mid 90s, and a big complaint at the time for me was that it’s too few pieces, and too many of those pieces are large and ugly. It’s like they thought having to assemble the set was a drawback instead of their strength. Glad they eventually came to their senses.
I believe the main reason why LEGO likes reusing the lion sigil (and also the dragon sigil) is because they're one of the most common symbols in the middle ages. I don't see how hard it is to grasp Also I personally like the 2013 Blue Lion symbol. It looks pretty nice and clean and I don't see anything wrong with it besides it being the 100th faction to use the animal
For me when growing up, classic LEGO Castle peaked with the Black Knights era. The theme started it's decent into the lazy and lame where they thought being novel was the most important thing (same thing happened to the Space theme). I don't think I liked another Castle sub-theme or faction again until Kingdoms (I really wish they would bring back the Dragon Kingdom faction), and again with the set from the past few years.
@@Goldfyre I was lucky enough to have my Black Knights sets survive 25 years plus of Rubbermaid storage. I cleaned and rebuilt them last year including Black Knights' Castle, The Sea Serpent (I agree, a fantastic set), and The Black Knight. I would love to see the faction return in a large castle/fortress set on par with the Lion Knight's Castle in the next year or so with just enough time for the Wolfpack to get it's turn first.
I agree with most of these (Knights Kingdom 2 especially). But when it comes to the much maligned Royal Knights: the Royal Knights Castle is legit good, maybe even great. I got it a few years ago and it's a fun one. Maybe the last good raised baseplate castle.
Since I watched your video last time, I have built the Witch's Manor, just to see what it was all about. And what I mostly found was wasted potential. Even with the parts available at the time, there would have been better options to make a "ruined castle". With modern parts on top, WMM can totally be salvaged. There's an okay basis below all the large rock pieces (which isn't something I can say about all the castles on this list).
Tbh I really like the Witch's Magic Manor! It's true that it lacks architectural detail what makes it look unfinished in some areas, but the concept of the set is very unique. Isn't it the only castle ruin EVER featured in an official Castle set? Also I loved the play features as a kid: The revolving door with the skeleton, the LURP boulder as a portcullis that hides a figure when lowered, and of course the dragon, helicopter and horse, what makes it a great starter kit for a faction bc there's also the whole range of archer, infantry and cavalry included.
I think it could have been a really cool set tbh. I once saw someone say that it would have been neat if it was a ruined version of one of the dragon master's castles. Could have made for some fun world building imo
I have the 2013 Castle set, while I was kind of underwhelmed with the build, I did buy two more to make it better with four towers, one for each corner and bought a lot of Mini figures and stuff for it, but then after sometime I took it apart and shoved it into a box thinking I might rebuild it one day, but I haven't, YET, but I am sort of working on a fanstasy setup for a coffie table which includes the 2022 Castle and the resent village set, but I do have plans for the old castle, having bought a incomplete set resently, my plan is for that set to form the outer walls to defend the town from invaders and thus run along the edge of the table top, underneath the table is currently housing my UFO sets I resently gotten as they got my favourte aliens, not really a fan of later lego Aliens as they look more genetic or plain silly in my eyes, while the UFO aliens, while standard mini figures with trans heads plus some cool armour, have actually cool looking ships
As much as I don't like saying this as an AFOL, I cannot lie and say those castle actions figures were not super fun to play with as a kid 😂 My childhood castle themes were the two Knights Kingdoms lines, and so I have a soft spot for these big ol' clunky castle sets.
I personally am fine with knights kingdom II, I mean its alright but not bad. Sure the sets where VERY cheesy looking but they aren’t terrible. But the buildable figures they made for it? Whole different story. Those things are terrible. It really dragged down that line.
I think people unjustifiable hate on the Witch Manor. Here is what you can do if you have 3 of it and do the alt models: th-cam.com/video/-uOSmSy7oEs/w-d-xo.html This is a set that could suffer a reimagining (like the Baron von Baron Spooky Mansion) I think it's way better than people give it credit. Also I saw a lot of people complain about the 2 big sets from Dragon Masters - I love them both. I always loved BURPs when used well. Regarding the Fantasy era ... I think the elves were the most underdeveloped faction: they had ONE guy ... with a bow ... in a CMF line. =)))
I dont think the first set is supposed to be a Castle. It is Castle theme, but not a Castle itself, i think. I think it is more of a gateway to a Castle with a trap , or something like that. :)
Having a large beard to cover up whatever torso was under it I think is a fine excuse. When I use those beard pieces, I refuse to use any of my good medieval themed torso's, instead using any plain one I can find in a color I want to use. You can't see them anyways, so what's the point of using anything good?
Wait, wait! Lego was going to introduce the *Elves* into Fantasy Era?! BEFORE FANTASY ERA GOT CANCELED?!?! WHY LEGO?!?!😭 😭😭😭😭WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
How dare you! Knights Kingdom 2 was an awesome theme. It wasnt alienating like other themes, and instead had actual characters. Those buildable knights were cool too. What Castle fans are you talking about exactly? Where did you get that idea? The castle of Morcia is awesome. Poor opinion.
I'm pretty young so when I got into Castle there was no main theme for it. I always hated how little sets we got. Clearly you guys weren't too keen on every set you got. Luckily the Castle sets nowadays are great, oh, wait, that stupid workshop!😒😒🤣🤣
isn't it odd that the derth of castle sets in recent years has started to make the older 'bad' sets stil look better? I know things i used to turn my nose up at now are on my BL want list. Witch's magic manor is odd but it is an outside the box idea which i appreciate. I 100% agree on royal knights looking awful. I like the builds for the time but.... I actually don't mind the blue lion castle as yeah bad for a modern set but ....better than not having zero smaller castle sets on the market. It also did have a gatehouse which i appreciate. So wish LEGO had done classic dragon in red. anyone 3D printing them? KK builds yeah were BAD!
I can't help but feel you shit on the lion symbol a little too much. If you stop and think about it, the fact Lego uses a lion as a recurring symbol for their Castle factions actually makes sense. As I'm sure all people watching this video knows, The Lego Group is a Danish company. And the state coat of arms of Denmark features three pale blue lions wearing crowns, surrounded by heraldic hearts, all in a golden shield with the royal crown on top.
I feel like you lost the plot a little bit, going from discussing actual lego Castles to discussing missed potential for a faction at the tail end. That said, I'm VERY surprised to see that despite using footage of it, Knight's Kingdom 1 didn't appear on this list. You tease.
Your opinion is 100% correct! So much junk was made late 90s into 2000s. Yikes!! I loved Basil though, but only he. I hate the Lion knights, all of the different incarnations of Lion knights! 😂 Lion knights are the villains!!!
I was not a fan of the huge pieces lego started to use in the mid 90's. Some sets where like 4 huge pieces a brick on top and that was it. For me it was a step down from their designs of the late 80's and early 90's. But I still blame myself for ignoring the Wolfpack sets at the time... 🥲

Shocked my Big Black Castle didnt make this list
KommanderKaren spotted :0
@@SomeBurgerMan i've been known to lurk from time to time
Having a large beard to cover up whatever torso was under it I think is a fine excuse. When I use those beard pieces, I refuse to use any of my good medieval themed torso's, instead using any plain one I can find in a color I want to use. You can't see them anyways, so what's the point of using anything good?
True! Though i still wish there was some variety there.
honestly vladek would have been fine along other castle themes and his scorpion design was unique, pity his rivals sucked as again his design was fire
#bringbackthecrownknight
The Royal Knights were absolutely awesome, especially in the 90s! I totally disagree!
Hold got jokes today.
Wait, wait! Lego was going to introduce the *Elves* into Fantasy Era?! BEFORE FANTASY ERA GOT CANCELED?!?!
WHY LEGO?!?!😭 😭😭😭😭WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I thought this was shitty back when I was a 7-year old kid. I didn't really like the fright knights that much.
Bro I loved knights kingdom 😭
Nexo Knights not being considered is telling of how Castle fans think of the theme.
I considered talking about it but imo they're their own thing imo. Honestly some of the nexo figs are really sick just not medieval enough for me
@@Goldfyre valid, I think the lava and stone monsters would fit in with castle, especially the fantasy era.
@@lazulenoc6863 I love the lava monster figs. They can work really well for a custom faction
Lion knight is the best faction hand down
Actually the raising rock entrance on the witches castle is really cool. But the rest of the set is ugly and weird
The royal knights are my favorite or are one of them how dare you but good job
I like knights kingdom 2, however it is a bit abstract.
I'm kind of upset now you're telling me that we could have had dwarves humans and elves going against skeletons and trolls
Hay man don't dis the lion nights thay are Mt favorite so stop the haye
@Goldfyre Man, being called a senior citizen, while just recently being diagnosed with autism, I feel like I must've offended you on a deep level, ha
lmao
Nah Knights Kingdom 2 is great
Oi as an autistic kid back in the 2000's knights kingdom was the bomb!
Let’s go!
I feel like you lost the plot a little bit, going from discussing actual lego Castles to discussing missed potential for a faction at the tail end. That said, I'm VERY surprised to see that despite using footage of it, Knight's Kingdom 1 didn't appear on this list. You tease.
kk1 is kinda forgetable to me tbh. they had good figs but the sets are very unremarkable.
@@Goldfyre They aren't even bad enough to be on the worst castle list???? How cruel!
How are lions still around
Your opinion is 100% correct! So much junk was made late 90s into 2000s. Yikes!! I loved Basil though, but only he. I hate the Lion knights, all of the different incarnations of Lion knights! 😂 Lion knights are the villains!!!
True
Any castle after set 6086 was terrible.
If having taste makes us autistic so be it 💪
you all are lego's strongest soldiers don't worry lol
na you right bro
Sooo correct
based
Hi
Bro shits on the lion symbol but says nothing about the monstrosity that was the troll logo?
HUHH, the troll sigil is sick
Love to see some knights kingdom slander.
bound for a title change
here before title change
Royal knights suck royaly
I was not a fan of the huge pieces lego started to use in the mid 90's.
Some sets where like 4 huge pieces a brick on top and that was it. For me it was a step down from their designs of the late 80's and early 90's.
But I still blame myself for ignoring the Wolfpack sets at the time... 🥲
