This album is really just one emotional gutpunch after another. The second song is about tragic love that ends with a double suicide. The third song? A couple that died in abject poverty. The sixth song? A person begging the mailman for any type of news from a loved one that is probably dead. No, scratch that. Totally dead. Absolutely dead. Which makes it worse, because there then comes the question of whether they *do* know that their spouse/SO is dead but they're just lying to themselves by hoping that the mail will say something different. The ninth song is about a homeless couple that manage to scrounge a living. And we all know what the tenth song is about. In sum total: holy shit.
A little correction. We Both Go Down Together is not about a tragic love. Colin Meloy confirmed that the song is sung from the perspective of a rapist to his victim, hence the lyric "we laid down in the grass of a clearing, you wept but your soul was willing." He's trying to convince her to kill herself, saying that he will as well. Still equally tragic, just a bit darker in tone.
@@KingliestRat I was always wondered about that part. But there are some cases where a couple who are still together had a "rapey" first sex experience. I've heard my sister talk about it.

Love this band. Most of their songs have those sad stories that touch you from the first minute.
When I got widowed I finally understood the concept lol
This tune is very calming, but also very catchy.

@@KingliestRat Tbh that only proves my point. Rape, poverty, missing loved ones. As I said before, holy shit.
