Now you know why Guy Clark said in his Dublin Blues, " I have seen The David and The Mona Lisa too and I have heard Doc Watson play Columbus Stockade Blues."
Doc Watson was to bluegrass what Isaac Newton was to physics or Monet was to painting. He is the standard by which all acoustic bluegrass guitar music is measured. He was a cultural icon who literally knew thousands of songs. When he passed away what we lost was like a library burning down.
I have listened to just about every Doc song that was recorded. Great artist. In regards to you not knowing what's so special about his voice.. For me it's that he sounds like my "grandpa" is singing to me. Not that my grandpa sounds like him but it's a warm inviting friendly voice that feels like is singing to you personally. Maybe that's weird but that's how I've always seen it. Funny how some singers don't have the most amazing voices or ranges but seem to grip us in some way others don't.
I am amazed at how talented so many blind people are! I know I should not be, but I have seen so many guitar players who have to look at the guitar as they play. Needless to say, if you're blind, this is not an option.

We used to sing this song when I was a kid. My grandma would play the piano and my dad would play the guitar
Saw him many times. Usually up close at small clubs……absolutely mesmerizing talent.
