Another option for those without pets. We often stay in hostels with our own private bedroom and private bathroom! Shared kitchen area was a fun place to meet other travelers. In central and northern Spain 2022, these were priced closer to $25-30/night

My plan is quit my job and travel 3months in one country, 3 months in non -shengan country and go home to US and work nursing agency contracts they pay double what I'm making for 5-6 months then back to traveling. Still working so I can afford it all and pay for health insurance. 👍

Well, it's so good to hear from the two of you! I didn't count on a response. I'll follow up with an email but real quick, here's the latest... when we stay in a country for a month, we take an AirBNB for the entire time as a base. Usually we are away from the AirBNB for at least 1/3 of that time, visiting/scouting other places. Well, after my last writing, we decided to seek sunnier locales, so we fled over the mountain to Tivat. And guess what? We're loving it! It's probably no drier than Kotor but love the sailing vibe. We're staying at the Regent Hotel which is part of Porto Montenegro. In between the raindrops, we've been eating and drinking our way along their Esplanade. I could see living here as well, though given these hotel rates, why does the internet have to suck so bad??!! Tomorrow we check out and move on to Budva, then possibly Bar and Ulcinj [sic]. In closing, so happy to see your new video is up! It must be strange thousands of us have spent countless hours with you, but you have no idea who we are. That's probably the cross you bear as a "global influencer." Relieved to hear that you enjoy the local Expat community. The odd thing is there are so many mixed feelings about Montenegro, yet we want to like it and would like to love it as you two clearly do. Hope your videos will continue! Best to you both! We have done the home base thing too and it makes traveling much easier. We have our own mixed feelings too. As one of us worships the sun and the other appreciates cool temperature and shade, it's extremely difficult to please both criteria. There are good and bad points here, but we have learned that seems to be the case everywhere. Friends are a very big draw for us here as well as the residency options. Truth be told, The YT algorithms have had me feeling a bit frustrated and I have been putting the channel on the sidelines while I tried to motivate myself to put a video out. The past several months YT has severely reduced our video exposure for unknown reasons, kinda felt like we are being punished or shadow banned. @@RJC369 It's the Hoff!!! I totally don't believe it. But that's ok, I totally get into talking about Albania, any excuse will do! I'm shocked at how much I liked it. AND it is important to mention that the people were genuinely interested in international visitors and they remained very welcoming, even after discovering I am now from the US. As a highly respected cultural anthropologist, you know this is not standard, expected response these days. Especially since Albania is the one and only country in all of Europe that has a majority Muslim population. There is even a statue of Hillary Rodham Clinton in Sarande! Yes!!! It's true, people adore her and respect her, all around the world! Granted, there are a few who don't hold her in such high esteem in her own country, but even Jesus wasn't respected in his hometown, right? Anywho... when you're finshed laying flowers at the Hillary statue, there's still tons of stuff to do. The people were very welcoming! Those under 30 spoke English! And they were willing to put themselves out there. Very nice indeed, especially compared to some countries such as where I am now, and more than a few people seem to go out of their way to be unhelpful. In closing, I strongly suggest that you and Indiana Jones, err... I mean Harrison Ford, put Albania on your list. This probably wasn't all that helpful but I'm so glad we had this time together, just to share a laugh and sing a song... Ciao.

As a 62-yr old single semi-retired nomad, I’d like to hear about others in the same situation and/or share my experience living in multiple countries on Social Security, budgeting tips, running a business remotely, managing travel on your own. So!!! We're here!!! We are in Kotor!!! We thought we'd invite ourselves over for coffee and we've been wandering up and down the alleyways of Old Town, screaming "Warren!!!" "Julie!!!" "We know you're up there!" Actually none of that is true. We're not crazy. But we are in Kotor and how nice it would have been to take our favorite TH-cam celebrities out for dinner. You are responsible for altering our lives. And for our coming to Montenegro. And for having non-stop rain for 17 of the last 19 days and an AirBNB in Dobrota that is ridiculously way-too small. We had visions of following in your footsteps and buying here but events have led us to believe this isn't "THE" place for us. It's a big world, after all. So in closing let me say a couple of things. First, congratulations! You followed your dream and made it work. You made your TH-cam channel a success. We will miss you. I’ve traveled to all 50 states and about 12 countries during my working years, but I want to make world travel my life for my remaining years. I may be ready to make the move in about a year at the age of 65.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen many or all of our videos, you may want to have a vehicle to get around Europe with your guitar and your belongings. And then you can bring a companion along in the vehicle as you drive around. You may want to join our Facebook group search for Warren Julie travel, and see if there’s other like-minded people out there to connect with for an adventure. We had considered exploring Poland and Austria, before heading back to Oregon to see grandchildren and possibly sell our Portland condo. Your recent video from Romania introduced another possible stop, probably a long Non-Schengen stay in the area. My wife has MS, so, a highly qualified neurologist is a must. It's very difficult for us to answer how is healthcare in Romania. We have friends who live there and have spoken positively about their experiences with the system and the doctors, but we have not personally had to use the healthcare in that country.
I think there are advantages to this lifestyle as far as seeing family. We live on the road and were still in the planning stages of what we were going to do this winter, when we got a call from our son, who lives in Hawaii, saying we were going to have our first grandbaby in December. So guess where we are right now for a few months, splitting the cost of their house, awaiting the arrival of our granddaughter.
I agree! It’s their fault! We’re in SA now and will start traveling next year. Spain is on the stop list! Oh my gosh , we sold our vehicle too a week before we departed, the dealership who purchased it gave us a ride to the airport!!😅
We just did a video with an 81-year-old nomad and several people asked questions about Medicare. He responded and I am pasting his response: Yes, I continue to elect Medicare in case I ever have to go back to the US. I also carry travel insurance and have a major medical policy. Hope that helps. It depends on your check, average single is $1800 average couple is paid $2800. If you look at another video we had a couple traveling on $2200. It depends on your needs and where you spend your time.

I have been asked this a few times and my answer is to ask her to commit to one year. I would expect she will become addicted to it and continue after the first year. Traveling for us is a privilege and we try to always see it as the blessing it is despite the stressful times we occasionally encounter. There is a big world out there to explore!!
No he still has Medicare, he carries an International coverage also however. A stipulation for Americans on that policy over age 65 is to have Medicare.
This was a great video as we prepare to retire to spend time with family and travel. But the numbers did not add up, are they using the 3300.00 a month for rent only? Just trying to get some clarification on the numbers because we will start our journey next year. We retire next month, traveling is not new to us but we are definitely interested in learning more.
I do have a question. Do retired Americans still have to pay for Medicare in the US while traveling the world and paying for additional health insurance?
It’s an option and most people tend to do it because you can have a penalty when you come back and want to apply or a delay in coverage when starting again.
What am I missing? They have to be citizens of some country and have a permanent address. Can you please address this? I traveled fulltime for two years in the US and needed an actual physical address for my credit union and social security (no p.o. box or mail service allowed). I must be missing something, very frustrating.
Nobody gives up citizenship to travel full time or to live abroad. Unless you’re ultra wealthy and worried about taxes that would be a foolish thing to do. Many Americans living abroad use a digital mailbox which has a physical address, google it for options. We used one for a year but currently use our Son’s address.
Everyone is different of course, but in general most like outdoor time exploring, hiking, beaches, going to cafes, and visiting different events going on in the region. Going to the market for daily shopping, meeting friends for games or drinks etc especially if staying in a single country. There are many Facebook expat groups to join and meet up with people. Of course there is the regular tourist stuff to do as well. You can also choose to watch Netflix, TH-cam etc or start a hobby and I personally like to stay on top of investing and read up on articles quite often. We don’t get bored very often but it can happen, particularly in the winter if it rains for a while. A general question for you and your viewers. For slow travelers who stay at one location for 2-4 months, do you usually book an Airbnb for a few days to see if you like the Airbnb first before commit to a long term 2-4 months? And/or use the first few days to look around for rental/lodging options after you get to a new location.
We normally book a month. We have too many needs, dog friendly being one of them. It may be hard to get a month without planning ahead for us. There’s also usually a discount for longer stays.
Do you have a car and home in the U.S. for when you stop traveling because you tire of it or you get too old to travel ? What exactly is your plan for when your health and or mobility issues dictate the end of constant travel ? I am considering slow traveling myself but wonder about these very questions, thanks.
We do not have a car or house in the US. We have spoken about this topic a few times. If our health becomes an issue, we will seek residency and greatly reduce travel.
I think one thing that is important to know is that if you sell your house to do this, and you have a good chunk of equity, you can invest that money from the house and let it grow, and when you are ready to settle back down somewhere, you have that money. We sold our house at a high in the market on an assumption that we could live on the road cheaper, have that house money grow while hopefully the prices of houses go down (I think eventually they will) and then buy something.

Hey y'all, quick non related question, but I know you guys are well versed in this sort of stuff that others may also find helpful. I'm currently in Uruguay. I plan to depart to Spain soon, and stay there for a a few months. Because of the Schengen agreement, I need to have an onward ticket outside the Naz..err, Schengen space. Since I plan to hop around non schengen countries 3 months at a time, and I want to save money by not buying a ticket back to Uruguay, where I have residency, is it viable to purchase a ticket to a country outside the schengen in order to prove to the customs that I'll be leaving the area? Since my intention is to be in Eastern Europe for a long time, it would save me quite a bit of money if I buy a cheap flight to Eastern Europe. Also, let's say I go to Montenegro, will I need to show proof of a return ticket back to Uruguay, if my intention is to travel around Montenegro, Albania, Serbia and other countries? What is your view on this. Am I on the money?
When we flew to Serbia in January 2021, we were never asked for onward travel. I would suggest finding a cheap ticket to a nonschengen country so you have something to show. Unfortunately, I don't really have that much information on this topic as we don't fly from destination to destination. We travel by car.

Regular landlords need to learn how to rent out for more but with no deposit and with amenities like linen, silverware, pots and pans. If they did, Airbnb would not be so expensive. Also, the 90 day rule for moneyed nomads should be abolished. We pay 1600 Euros per month rent as nomads which is far too high. It's $800 every two weeks, however, so it fits with monthly cash flow.
@@jugoslavnamljidjiu9021 Because there is no deposit with Airbnb and hotels. They just charge more but not double more. An example: on March 1st we looked at a $750 per month apartment in Sofia. The landlord thought three months was too short a term, but Americans can only stay 90 days. So I said we'd pay $1200 per month. That was interesting to the landlord but he tried for a deposit on top of that. He pushed and pushed til I agreed to pay $1500 up front ($300 deposit). The next day he said $400 deposit and it's a deal. But I only had $1300 cash and would have to wait 18 days for my salary. He should have taken $1200 and let us try to live on $100 for three weeks, trying to buy pots and pans and linens for his apartment. So we said we'd have to wait 18 days. An Airbnb for 17 days was only $900 and we could spend $400 on food and not buy pots and pans. 18 days later the landlord still hadn't found a tenant (he'd lost $900 he could have earned if he hadn't asked for a deposit). I said it was easier to stay at the Airbnb than pay him the $1600 he wanted with that deposit. He'll probably lose $1200 he could have had in March and deposits are not really income anyway. I had tried to tell him that my rent proposition of $1200 was better than a deposit especially after two months of earning such rent. For 90 day nomads, deposits of one month rent plus agent fees of half a month's rent are impossible. But you can ask us for much higher monthly rent if we can pay every two weeks (which is another thing - paying large sums a month in advance is crazy as one can afford a nicer Airbnb and pay every two weeks instead of all at once).
Looking back, I should have agreed to his deal but with rent payments of $600 every two weeks. That way I'd give him $1000 to move in and $600 every two weeks for three months. I simply wasn't used to such negotiations and the idea that Bulgaria has to be so expensive. Btw, one can say that Airbnb provides insurance to landlords, but it's not worth it for the fees they pay
Airbnb has worked out well for us most of the time, but we have reduced our expectations since we started our journey. Airbnb has helped us out of difficult situations.

As a 62-yr old single semi-retired nomad, I’d like to hear about others in the same situation and/or share my experience living in multiple countries on Social Security, budgeting tips, running a business remotely, managing travel on your own. I went from being a corporate expat (on an expense account) to freelance digital nomad (different country every month) to this not-sure-what-to-call-it and am still figuring it out!

So!!! We're here!!! We are in Kotor!!! We thought we'd invite ourselves over for coffee and we've been wandering up and down the alleyways of Old Town, screaming "Warren!!!" "Julie!!!" "We know you're up there!" Actually none of that is true. We're not crazy. But we are in Kotor and how nice it would have been to take our favorite TH-cam celebrities out for dinner. I’m not sure if you’ve seen many or all of our videos, you may want to have a vehicle to get around Europe with your guitar and your belongings. And then you can bring a companion along in the vehicle as you drive around. You may want to join our Facebook group search for Warren Julie travel, and see if there’s other like-minded people out there to connect with for an adventure. We know quite a few people traveling solo.

Thank you all for the informative video! My wife and I are SS travelers, too. Currently, we are in Lviv. We had considered exploring Poland and Austria, before heading back to Oregon to see grandchildren and possibly sell our Portland condo. Your recent video from Romania introduced another possible stop, probably a long Non-Schengen stay in the area. My wife has MS, so, a highly qualified neurologist is a must. How is healthcare in Romania? I like the healthcare in Austria. What is your opinion about healthcare for senior travelers? Thank you. Dean
It's very difficult for us to answer how is healthcare in Romania.
We have friends who live there and have spoken positively about their experiences with the system and the doctors, but we have not personally had to use the healthcare in that country.
I think there are advantages to this lifestyle as far as seeing family. We live on the road and were still in the planning stages of what we were going to do this winter, when we got a call from our son, who lives in Hawaii, saying we were going to have our first grandbaby in December. So guess where we are right now for a few months, splitting the cost of their house, awaiting the arrival of our granddaughter.

It depends on your check, average single is $1800 average couple is paid $2800. If you look at another video we had a couple traveling on $2200. It depends on your needs and where you spend your time.

I have been asked this a few times and my answer is to ask her to commit to one year. I would expect she will become addicted to it and continue after the first year. Traveling for us is a privilege and we try to always see it as the blessing it is despite the stressful times we occasionally encounter. There is a big world out there to explore!!

No he still has Medicare, he carries an International coverage also however. A stipulation for Americans on that policy over age 65 is to have Medicare.
This was a great video as we prepare to retire to spend time with family and travel. But the numbers did not add up, are they using the 3300.00 a month for rent only? Just trying to get some clarification on the numbers because we will start our journey next year. We retire next month, traveling is not new to us but we are definitely interested in learning more.
$3300 is their entire budget including rent and tithing. They aim for $1000 or less per month in rent.
Dual ss income is certainly enough to travel or live on. If you ate in good health i suppose.
I do have a question. Do retired Americans still have to pay for Medicare in the US while traveling the world and paying for additional health insurance?
It’s an option and most people tend to do it because you can have a penalty when you come back and want to apply or a delay in coverage when starting again.
What am I missing? They have to be citizens of some country and have a permanent address. Can you please address this? I traveled fulltime for two years in the US and needed an actual physical address for my credit union and social security (no p.o. box or mail service allowed). I must be missing something, very frustrating.
Nobody gives up citizenship to travel full time or to live abroad. Unless you’re ultra wealthy and worried about taxes that would be a foolish thing to do. Many Americans living abroad use a digital mailbox which has a physical address, google it for options. We used one for a year but currently use our Son’s address.
How do people interviewed spend their time
Everyone is different of course, but in general most like outdoor time exploring, hiking, beaches, going to cafes, and visiting different events going on in the region. Going to the market for daily shopping, meeting friends for games or drinks etc especially if staying in a single country. There are many Facebook expat groups to join and meet up with people. Of course there is the regular tourist stuff to do as well. You can also choose to watch Netflix, TH-cam etc or start a hobby and I personally like to stay on top of investing and read up on articles quite often. We don’t get bored very often but it can happen, particularly in the winter if it rains for a while.

A general question for you and your viewers. For slow travelers who stay at one location for 2-4 months, do you usually book an Airbnb for a few days to see if you like the Airbnb first before commit to a long term 2-4 months? And/or use the first few days to look around for rental/lodging options after you get to a new location.
We normally book a month. We have too many needs, dog friendly being one of them. It may be hard to get a month without planning ahead for us. There’s also usually a discount for longer stays.
I understand but it seems like a big commitment if you have not even seen the place? Myself, I do not have so many needs.

Do you have a car and home in the U.S. for when you stop traveling because you tire of it or you get too old to travel ? What exactly is your plan for when your health and or mobility issues dictate the end of constant travel ? I am considering slow traveling myself but wonder about these very questions, thanks.
We do not have a car or house in the US. We have spoken about this topic a few times. If our health becomes an issue, we will seek residency and greatly reduce travel.
I think one thing that is important to know is that if you sell your house to do this, and you have a good chunk of equity, you can invest that money from the house and let it grow, and when you are ready to settle back down somewhere, you have that money. We sold our house at a high in the market on an assumption that we could live on the road cheaper, have that house money grow while hopefully the prices of houses go down (I think eventually they will) and then buy something.

Hey y'all, quick non related question, but I know you guys are well versed in this sort of stuff that others may also find helpful. I'm currently in Uruguay. I plan to depart to Spain soon, and stay there for a a few months. Because of the Schengen agreement, I need to have an onward ticket outside the Naz..err, Schengen space.
Since I plan to hop around non schengen countries 3 months at a time, and I want to save money by not buying a ticket back to Uruguay, where I have residency, is it viable to purchase a ticket to a country outside the schengen in order to prove to the customs that I'll be leaving the area? Since my intention is to be in Eastern Europe for a long time, it would save me quite a bit of money if I buy a cheap flight to Eastern Europe.
Also, let's say I go to Montenegro, will I need to show proof of a return ticket back to Uruguay, if my intention is to travel around Montenegro, Albania, Serbia and other countries?
What is your view on this. Am I on the money?
When we flew to Serbia in January 2021, we were never asked for onward travel. I would suggest finding a cheap ticket to a nonschengen country so you have something to show.
Unfortunately, I don't really have that much information on this topic as we don't fly from destination to destination. We travel by car.

Regular landlords need to learn how to rent out for more but with no deposit and with amenities like linen, silverware, pots and pans. If they did, Airbnb would not be so expensive. Also, the 90 day rule for moneyed nomads should be abolished. We pay 1600 Euros per month rent as nomads which is far too high. It's $800 every two weeks, however, so it fits with monthly cash flow.
And why no deposit if tenant broke something that have value the deposit is security for landlords if you dont pay bills etc.
@@jugoslavnamljidjiu9021 Because there is no deposit with Airbnb and hotels. They just charge more but not double more. An example: on March 1st we looked at a $750 per month apartment in Sofia. The landlord thought three months was too short a term, but Americans can only stay 90 days. So I said we'd pay $1200 per month. That was interesting to the landlord but he tried for a deposit on top of that. He pushed and pushed til I agreed to pay $1500 up front ($300 deposit). The next day he said $400 deposit and it's a deal. But I only had $1300 cash and would have to wait 18 days for my salary. He should have taken $1200 and let us try to live on $100 for three weeks, trying to buy pots and pans and linens for his apartment. So we said we'd have to wait 18 days. An Airbnb for 17 days was only $900 and we could spend $400 on food and not buy pots and pans. 18 days later the landlord still hadn't found a tenant (he'd lost $900 he could have earned if he hadn't asked for a deposit). I said it was easier to stay at the Airbnb than pay him the $1600 he wanted with that deposit. He'll probably lose $1200 he could have had in March and deposits are not really income anyway. I had tried to tell him that my rent proposition of $1200 was better than a deposit especially after two months of earning such rent. For 90 day nomads, deposits of one month rent plus agent fees of half a month's rent are impossible. But you can ask us for much higher monthly rent if we can pay every two weeks (which is another thing - paying large sums a month in advance is crazy as one can afford a nicer Airbnb and pay every two weeks instead of all at once).
Looking back, I should have agreed to his deal but with rent payments of $600 every two weeks. That way I'd give him $1000 to move in and $600 every two weeks for three months. I simply wasn't used to such negotiations and the idea that Bulgaria has to be so expensive.
Btw, one can say that Airbnb provides insurance to landlords, but it's not worth it for the fees they pay

Airbnb has worked out well for us most of the time, but we have reduced our expectations since we started our journey. Airbnb has helped us out of difficult situations.
