Kad Englez zavoli Hrvatsku. Od srca ti hvala Paul. When an Englishman falls in love with Croatia. Thank you very much Paul. You present our country better, more subtly than most Croats do or would.
I used to go to my grandparents "apartment" in Baška as a kid. As an adult, I went on two day trips to check it out. But, now you've made me want to go see other parts of the island.
Great video as always. Just one small correction, although it is the most famous, the Baška tablet, written around the year 1100, is not the first attestation of the Glagolitic script in Croatia. The Valun tablet, the Plomin tablet and the Krk inscription are all older, from the 11th century. The Baška tablet is the first longer Croatian text written in the Glagolitic script, with the first mention of the Croatian name in its native form (in the Croatian language, or rather the Croatian recension of Old Church Slavonic). The Croatian name is mentioned centuries earlier, but in its Latin and Greek forms.
❤ Krk . My father is from Krk , Kornić . Opposite small Church , Sveti Dunat , was my grandmother's house. She had a guest house there - Gostiona . Ammunition that was stored in the house exploded in 1945, after second WW . The whole island could hear the explosion . There was just a big crater left where the house was . Not manny people from that time who remember the event are arround any more .
It is one of the most interesting Old Christian churches built in Croatia, for me the most original one. It is such a pity that its spot is so neglected by the surrounding beach facilities, many tourists are passing by without noticing it at all, and its design is unique indeed, if we compare it to all today existing early medieval churches still preserved in our country. We are lucky that it was decided however to rebuild it after the explosion. But I remember when having summer holidays in Punat as a teenager, it served as a warehouse for empty bottles from the caffe nearby...
@@TrazomGVI agree it is one of the most interesting Christian churches and important monument of early Croatian architecture and Glagoljica letters . I think that Caffè there was build illegally and is much bigger than the few years ago . It shouldn't be allowed , it obscures the view of the historic monument that is Sveti Dunat church .
You forgot to mention; two male bears always live on Krk, never one, never three, when one is shot off the land, another swims up and females never appear. Krk was the seat of the Frankopan noble family, which originally arose on that island, and later spread throughout Croatia
I visited Brgudac, where my grandparents are from last summer. We drove by Krk but I knew nothing about it. This was a great presentation and I will definitely spend time there when I return.
Hi Paul, just got to Jelsa and need a restaurant recommendation . I watch a lot of your videos and thank you for all the information and history you research and share. Anton Strilcic
you barely scratched the surface here. Did you hear Staroslavenska misa in Dobrinj? Their tradition is to sing different movements using different music temperation: they distort some exact notes just by few Herz in intonation but only in some parts of liturgy where they are accompanied by traditional instruments. Other parts they sing with normally (equal tone) tuned organ. Can you imagine what level of talent this requires? Did you hear about the bear? And how people of Vrbnik breed their sheep? But not anymore because of the bear (and cubs). There is a nice story written in Baska tablet but also how it was rediscovered and translated by Ivan Kukuljevic Sakcinski (story includes theft, nighttime and conspiracy)...there is sooooo much. Vrbnik also gave us 2 bishops.
Paul, I think you should deff be our Minister of tourism!😅you know more about our tourist destinations, traditions and history than any of those Uhljebs sitting in Upper town Zagreb!
If you will allow me to add....košljun monastery is keeping historical records of literature dating hundreds of years. I was on Krk first time in 7th grade primary school....that is 1995. The island is amazing. Cres is larger island by 0.4km2.....the one thing about Krk i know you dont know and many croatians dont know this is that villages inland still to this days hold words which dates all the way back to ancient Persia. For example Paul I know you have heard about song Marjane,Marjane.....but Marjan in that song has nothing to do with that small hill in Split. it refers as ancient iranocoratian or aryancoratian word meaning soldier. That has been preserved....like Marjakir which is ancient croatian name for admiral...admiral comes from arabic....ruler of the seas...or Zarye Harvatyje....Croatian cubics(hrvatsko kockovlje) etc all has been written down in Veyske povede(vedic stories) so check it out. and one more important thing: Tablet of Baška 199cm x 99cm x 9.9com 13 rows(not words!) Az opat Držiha pisah se o ledine juže,da Zvonimir(Svinimir) kral Hrvatski v dni svoju daruju Svetu Luciju i forgot it...most of it...lmao Az Držiha zidah cerkvu ovu s devetju bratju svoju ai tko iže to poreče klni ga Bog i 12 apostoli i 4 evangelista i Sveta Lucija Amen you see my friend even the text dates back 1000y it is still understandable to us. Try to understand ancient english which is more norman than english today(english is grermanic language) All in all I am glad you have made this video cause Krk is beautiful and there is lots to see there and after Korčula it is most beautiful island to me...i visited most of them....most of inhabited...of course not most of total. number....like the furthest Jabuka and Brusnik(btw it would be interesting video if you would do it about those volcanic islands which are protected by European law) Cheers mate
nothing about Veyske povede (epic Croatian legends), veyska zayk: gan veyan (with many archaic words)...it's a shame that even the majority of Croats no nothing about it...also, people do not know about Chakavian astrognoses, which, after the Arabs and the Chinese, is one of the richest folk astrognoses in the world... part of those 127 names "zvizdoslovja" are from Veyske povede, and this kind of knowledge is usually characteristic of maritime countries...it did not fit the official narrative in former yugoslavia so it was never studied, and some people were killed because of it
To those who are adding and correcting data about Krk, I invite to open their own chanell and do all the work alone, i m sure they will do it perfectly, ..but must see to believe

I actually felt the same until I visited - amazing place.

How about the shoulder season?
Paul, please please do Rab!
Will get to at some point
Also im Juli/August hat es schon zuviel Touristen auf Krk. Gehen schon 40 Jahre dort in die Ferien
I have always felt the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit, and Krk is magical and not crowded at those times.
