    Hey kids! Uncle Ben here, back again for Weekend Wankshop 221! On today's lesson, you're gonna learn how to play Josie by Steely Dan, from their classic Aja record! I'm going to show you how to play the intro, verse and chorus chords, and bridge riff, all with chord notation on screen.
    This is a great song to learn to expand your chord vocabulary, there's so much cool stuff in here! Tons of that signature Mu Major chord that you've heard Rick Beato talk about. Definitely one of my favorites.
    I won't swear that these are the EXACT voicing Walter Brecker/ Larry Carlton played on the record! Its almost impossible to say for sure when you listen to the mix. But this will sound great when you play it, even if you don't have a million piece band backing you up.
    Playing my G&L Legacy with Bareknuckle Veneer Board pickups into my Kemper Profiler here. I made the backing track in Logic plus i used Superior Drummer 3, my LSL Balboa bass, and the Darkglass B7K plugin.
    Thanks for watching! What other classic Steely Dan tunes do you want to learn?

      which answers the question of 'will you still feed me?' although by the time you see this you'll be at least 65...time's funny like that...naaaaaah...the mail's gotten slow...i hear it got sick... let's wish it a speedy recovery...and, as far as YOUR recovery, mr steely dan man with the effed up hand...i would advise turmeric/curcuma...known for its anti inflammatory properties... included in many indian dishes...you can buy it powdered or in capsules...for what it's worth, amongst other things, i'm a retired nurse...it's a shame more people don't know about herbal type remedies...good health to ya...and to you and yours, mr eller...

    The chording in this song, and practically every other Steely Dan song, is BRILLIANT. Donald Fagen's songwriting talent and mastery of chord choices that sound great and drive a song forward is unparallelled.

    I've watched a lot of guitar channels and subscribed to a few, but no-one beats Uncle Ben for pure joy of playing and music theory, and outstanding enterntainment value. Of my many favourite bits where Mr. Eller attached adjectives to chords, his choice at 16:29 takes the cake. Live long and prosper, Uncle Ben.

    I have also had the good fortune to have Larry Carlton show me the intro to this song, at a masterclass he put on here in Seattle a few years ago. The way he showed me the last chord of the sequence was an A flat major 7 with a flat 5 - your pinky plays the root (A flat), ring finger plays the third (C) then your pointer finger barres the flat 5 (D) and major 7th (G) notes. That chord always eluded my ear when trying to learn it on my own, especially since it is playing with the keys and bass and is a dense mix as you noted.

    • @zenobardot
      @zenobardot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AbMaj7b5 has the advantage of being easier to grab after that D/G. I also think it sounds "drier" and a little more mysterious than the Ab13 shown in our host's interpretation in this video. However, Rick Beato, I notice, plays it as an Ab13 to illustrate a point in one of his videos (th-cam.com/video/If2Bli0rZcA/w-d-xo.html). I assume some instrument in the mix is playing that F that functions as the 6th or 13th.

    I like how those two chords at the end of the intro are like the same shape, but rotated 180s and moved a fret upward. I tend to think of fingerings on the fretboard like constellations or compound geometric figures to help me remember them, and when I realized it was the same one but inverted it helped a lot
