    I never ran the 4890 but did a lot of work on a 2470 in the late 70's. It was in the flat level plains of eastern Colorado and western Kansas. Mostly sweeping but did pull one-ways with it, if I remember it could pull 3 - 15' footers if not set too deep. Not a hill in sight but the crab steering was handy as the one ways could pull the rear of the tractor to the one side. It ran hot and had to be watched.

    Dad had 2470, 2670 and a 2870 back before he switched to mintill. In our flat ground the crab steer was only useful when hooking up to our 40 ft 3-point plows.
    I remember the routine was to check the engine fluids, then start the engine and grab the grease gun. Each wheel had steering and u-joint zerks, along with the TWO driveshafts. By the time you had greased everything the gun was ready for a new tube of grease and the engine pretty well warmed up.
    Then you got in and it felt like the earth was rolling under you, not like you were driving across it.
    Long ways up from the 730 Poppin' Johnny I started driving when I was 10.

    Cool to see a Traction King with a three point and PTO, my dad grew up farming with MD's, Oliver 77's, and eventually a Case 900. I spent my childhood driving through central and western MN, the Case 4wds were pretty popular (not as popular as Steigers, about as common as Versatiles) but I've never seen one with a three point.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +4 gauge Case built crab steer 4wds from 1966 to 1995. The Case 2470 Traction King was the best selling tractor of 1976 in the large hp class. It was a popular design especially for dairy farms and hull side grain farms. When Case and Steiger merged in 1986 the company began to move toward articulated 4wds only because Steiger was #1 in 4wd sales. There were two crab steer Steigers built after the merger that replaced the Case 4894 and 4694. The crab steer Steigers were the 9240 and 9260.

      bigtractorpower I have a neighboring farm down the road from me that has one of these and it is a 2470 by the way,in mint condition,they still use it for heavy farming operations.
      My question is this...
      What happened to Case in general?.Why did Case have to merge with International Harvester if Case was doing this well in sales?.

    • @countrygent4
      @countrygent4 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Case did not have to merge with International Harvester. Tennaco owned Case and they bought out IHC when IHC was about to declare Bankruptcy. They got it for pennies on the dollar. They bought the whole company for less than IHC spent to develop the Axial Flow combines. They merged the companies and became Case International Harvester. Discontinued the Red tractors that had just came out with 5088/5288, and 5488. A few 7288 and 7488 had been build and were sitting on the lot for shipment but Case crushed them. Less than a dozen had been shipped and were demoed at the Farm Progress show and 2 did get sold in Minnesota. They resold at a farm sale last year. Then when IHC customers would not buy White Case tractors - they painted them red. A couple of years later they came out with the Magnum's. The 1980's were hard on tractor companies - a lot of them went out of business. AC became Duetz Allis. Oliver - Cockshutt and Minneapolis Moline became White. Now Duetz Allis, White and Massey Ferguson are all the AGCO line. Ford tractor line was bought out my New Hollard, they were bought out by Fiat. Fiat finally bought out Case/IHC and Ford New Holland into one company but two separate lines of machinery but some common machines just different paint.

      John Davidson IH also sold their lawn and garden tractor division back in about 1982 to MTD.(producers of Sears,K-pro,Ranch King,White,Cub Cadet etc...low end junk basically).
      I knew a few friends that still own these RED garden tractors and they were very bit as good as Kabota and John Deere at one time not too long ago...how the mighty have fallen.

      4 gauge in 1969 CASE was building what would become the "70 series".. Tenneco had purchased something like 50 tractors so according to the rumor I had heard the CEO of JI CASE, said "why don't you just buy the company" so they did, and they carried the 70 series, then into the 90 series, and then the 94 series... during the 94 series in 1984 ih had went broke so Tenneco saw the opportunity to become a full line of farm equipment (CASE had dumped their combines and other implements in the early 70s) with the buying of ih

I've seen a CaseIH Steiger close to Ambrose, too. In Lamar Country, most people have CaseIh or Kubota. A lot of them have replaced their medium to small JD machines with Kubota. Ive been a case fan since the Axial Flow was released and the Steiger line was bought. But these rigid frame units with all wheel steer just look so ugly in my opinion.

      +Utters Adventures productions I would like to film one. My neighbor farmed with one for a few years from 1979 to 1981 and traded it for a new Case 4690 in 1982.

      We had one on our farm, I was 12 and I got to cut my teeth running the 4166.
