The first solo was a keyboard solo not guitar. This song is the final song of a 5 song suite over 5 albums detailing out the 12 steps of AA written by their former and now returned drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy. He battled and overcame alcoholism.
The Glass Prison (glass prison, drinking glass, alcoholism, pretty clever) tarts us off with first three steps “Reflection,” “Restoration,” and “Revelation”.
This Dying Soul is steps 4 and 5 "Reflections of Reality (Revisited)" and "Release".
The Root of all Evil is steps 6 and 7 "Ready" and "Remove".
Repentance is steps 8 and 9 "Regret" and "Restitution".
And finally the capstone of the Suite of music is The Shattered Fortress (shattering the glass prison, very on the nose with this one) Steps 10, 11, and 12. "Restraint," “Receive," “Responsible". This song features a lot of reprises in it from the previous 4 songs. Lots of easter egg riffs and motifs in here.
Without the context of all the previous songs this is kind of like watching the Return of the King without seeing the Fellowship of the Rings or the Two Towers. You don't have the foundation to appreciate what's being done here.
If you like the instrumentals but hate the vocals I highly recommend checking out Liquid Tension experiment, its the drummer, Mike Portnoy, guitarist, John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess, along with bassist Tony Levin making the best instrumental progressive metal you've ever heard. Check out their song Paradigm Shift or The Passage of Time if you want to get a taste of them in a purely instrumental form.

They reacted to the first 4 parts. Sad to say Repentance totally bored them.

@alanalanis2257 oh they started with the AA suite? Yeah I probably wouldn't have started them there, pull me under, as I am, contant motion, on the backs of angels, invisible monster, all better intros imo. But if they weren't a fan of any of the AA suites, then maybe DT just isn't for them.

I think Voices would be a pretty great song for the vocals, one of my favorite songs from them in general. If you don't like the singing on that one, you just don't like James LaBrie's voice, which is fine, a lot of people don't.

You should hear some of their instrumentals. One of them is Stream of Consciousness, which is off the Train of Thought album. Another is a Erotomania off of the Awake album.

The few songs you heard are far from the best to showcase DT's vocals, i would recommend "A Change of Seasons", "The Count of Tuscany", or "Wait for Sleep", "Vacant"
I'm also not a fan of the vocals for the songs you checked so far, but i'm a fan of them in those.
Glad i got all these DT reactions anyway, great videos guys !
Know that you are not alone in criticizing DT's vocals, even Mike Portnoy(drummer) has been spicy about that in the past, vocals were part of why he left the band for a while.
He's back since a few months. Hoping for more DT reactions in the future ! Thanks for these !

Dream Theater should always be viewed live. The music is out of this world but seeing it being played adds so much more to the song.

This song has bits and pieces of other songs in it. Might I suggest the Ministry of Lost Souls or the 20 minute two-part song In the Presence of Enemies.

I can definitely understand not liking James LaBrie’s voice all the time. That’s probably one of the biggest complaints people have about DT. I just wanted to take you guys on a musical journey outside of your comfort zone. James’s voice fits much better in their softer/slower songs than it does in their metal songs. I’m glad that you guys appreciated the experience and I’ll be nice and take an extended break from DT to give you a much needed reprieve. It won’t be for a while but the next time I throw some DT your way it will be there more mellow tunes or maybe even a instrumental or two since you guys seemed to enjoy that part of their music. You both get a brain cell since I probably destroyed the one you were sharing with these picks 🤣

Thanks again for doing this, you rock. I was trying to think of a DT song they would like. Since it's pretty much narrowed down to instrumentals and shorter songs, Stream of Conscoiusness comes to mind. And MAYBE Forsaken, since it is much more concise and "standard". I don't think they will ever enjoy an epic/mini epic - however I think In the Name of God would have the best chance of them. Srange Deja Vu is also interesting, but outside fo the context of the album it may be weird!

@@CompleteProducer84 The Enemy Inside or As I Am come to mind for shorter metal songs, but if they don't like James' voice I'm not sure we'll find a winner with DT. Maybe some of their early melodic material like Another Day MAY have a chance? Also it might help to have them react to a live performance. If not there's always LTE.

@@allenjudepaiva I’ve already requested a few live performances of DT. They liked Solitary Shell and Endless Sacrifice. I think Another Day would be a hit and probably Hollow Years or The Answer Lies Within. Something like that where James isn’t straining as much.

Dream Theater does a cover of Rainbow's Stargazer which Dio sings on the original. Please check it out. Thanks! 👍

The beginning of this song is the only great part of this song.
Their intrumedley from Bukodon is unmatched.
