My husband and I agree that one of the most mundane sounding things-- going to a laundromat -- ended up being a really nice experience! We're kinda "Lonely Planet" style travelers and really value conversations with locals. For our honeymoon we went to Ireland and had a very loose agenda, which ended up being greatly influenced by the people we met. We met a couple of really nice people while doing laundry, got suggestions for things to do and places to go, and just felt more in sync with the environment. 10/10 recommend!

Hey guys love your videos. I take fewer bottoms and more shirts. Just back from 12 days in Andalusia 3 pants, 1 dress, 2 L/S tops, 5 S/S tops and one fleece topper.

as an unexperienced traveller I ALWAYS think I'll need more clothes than I'll actually do. for instance I hardly need more than 2 different pants when I'm back home, but I still think I'll need more when I'm abroad :D

I would say 5 pairs of pants are a bit much considering how durable things like jeans are. I would just bring a pair of jeans, shorts, mayyybe sweatpants

Unless you’re going somewhere that never rains, always bring a light rain coat. One that can roll away easily into your carry on. Great for not only rain but something to keep your arms warm on the plane or in the evenings. My mother use constantly makes this mistake. Destination is warm so need for a rain coat & always get trapped in the rain. Like being caught in a sudden rain storm in South Africa

Travel tip: Container store compartmented cases for electronic accessories and medications. Don't think that putting them in plastic bags or clear ziploc bags, or even the zippered compartments on your suitcase is the way to go. You will only be frustrated time and time again looking for small items, and that's not how you want to spend your vacation.

  • @stanislas4990

I agree with the rule of five, but not for everything. Underwear and socks, obviously you change them everyday. Same for T-Shirts, polo shirts or shirts. Pants, jeans, sweaters: you need at least 2 or 3 of them, then you can wear them every 2 or 3 days. And 2 pairs of shoes, one pair of sneakers, and one pair of dress shoes
I don't like to wash when I'm travelling, so I try to bring what I need.

I have reduced down to packing only an under-seat sized carryon and maybe a small (8x10) messenger bag. It’s so much easier when you run into cobblestone streets to be able to just pick up your bag and still have a hand free to hold your phone for directions, etc. The rule of 5 is really good!
I saw in a video once to “pack for the best case scenario”. You can always buy additional items in an unusual circumstance.

Bring a small travel clothesline with suction cups to dry your Microfiber clothing in the shower. Buy a rubber stopper (European hotels often don't have stoppers) and wash in your hotel sink. You can buy small packets of laundry detergent with a low soap content made for this purpose. Easy peasy.

When I spent 3 years as a backpacker, I did a basic capsule wardrobe that allowed layering for all different climates from summer to snow. But now that I'm no longer in that life, I simply pack all my old clothes--old socks, old underwear, old shirts, old shoes--into a collapsible Le Sportsac. And I discard almost all my clothes along the way. Then, I have an empty bag for souvenirs...which is how I toted back my four sheepskin rugs...which warm my feet when I step out of bed...and remind me of a certain moment in time...

One of the big space saving tips I can pass along is something they taught us in the Corps. Roll your clothes, don't pack them flat. You can get a lot more crammed into a small space by rolling. Also, it's something I've modified, but I'll roll my worn undershirt and skivvies, then secure them by rolling my used socks to keep everything tight. That also helps when I go to do laundry, THIS is my dirty stuff. Oh, I'll also mention that to the Thugs Standing Around as they'll ask, it keeps them from fracking up my stuff anymore than they already do.

When I’m traveling, no one I meet is going to know if the clothes I’m wearing look similar from one day to the next - and a mostly monochromatic, drip-dry travel wardrobe suits me just fine. For “shoulder season,” a few basic black WoolX shirts (long + short-sleeve), two colorful overshirt/blouses, and three pairs of black slacks or jeans. A jacket. Socks, quick-drying jammy shorts and unmentionables.

One of my friends used to be a photographer for travel agencies. He travelled the world all the time. He always said to put anything you would absolutely need on a table. Then put half of it back. And finally pack half of what's left.

I carry on so I don’t have checked luggage. Depends on the season so it could be a mix of pants and shorts (3-4), 5-7 shirts. Rain jacket, zip up fleece, maybe a hat because I’ll probably buy one as a souvenir, same with shirts. Remember you can always do a load of wash. 4 of us guys traveled to Germany and we washed all of our laundry together to save some $$.

  • @dougkippen4971

Totally agree on minimalist packing. Less to carry, cheaper, less for the airlines to lose, etc.
The biggest problem we encounter, especially in Europe, is finding laundromats and/or laundry services (aside from hotels which charge usurious prices). The best compromise we've found is taking a solid laundry soap bar and hand washing everything in a hotel's washroom sink. But since there are limited drying hanging spots and a lot of laundry, this process is non-stop throughout the trip.
Maybe you could do a quick video on how you do your laundry (or have it done) and/or where you find these services.

It appears to me that in Europe, if you want to guarantee to have access to a laundry machine, 90% of the time you need to find an Airbnb that has the machine in the unit. It's not that difficult to find a laundromat in big city but I agree that it could be challenging some times.

Of course, if you travel for months, eventually you will still need to wash them, but for someone like me who travels no more than 2 weeks at a time, it's a game changer.

Years ago, I got into the habit of taking only a carry on bag plus a personal bag. The majority of my travel clothing (tee shirts, golf shirts, underwear & socks) is made of Merino Wool, which saves the amount that I have to pack. In case I'm forced to check my carry on, I also carry an extra pair of socks and underwear in the personal bag. Yes, Merino Wool clothing is pricey, but the fact you can wear something for a few days without the stink is really convenient.

I also have this neat little handheld washboard that allows me to do laundry in the sink/tub. One time it was forgotten and gf noticed the hotel soap dish in the shower was similar. It became the new washboard lol

When we were packing for our two-week honeymoon in Ireland I was a bit perturbed by how much my fiancee was packing. I used to be a backpacker and am normally pretty spartan in how much I pack. When I asked him why, he explained that if an item of clothing got damaged, unless we were in a major city he could not easily replace because of his size: he's 6'6" and weighs about 400lbs. Shirts especially *have* to be talls or they're crop tops on him.

i wear the same shirt to bed every night until time for the trip and whenever i go on the trip i throw that shirt out because by that point it's got holes and worn out. So at the end of that trip you have 2 or 3 nights of shirts layers of space you want to fit souvenirs in. When in return of trip start wearing a new old shirt in weeks/months leading up to next trip. Repeat.
