T Lo tome, it’s more stressful to lug around multiple bags than do a wash in the middle of a trip. We don’t stay in hotels, and I make sure every bnb we stay in has laundry facilities. Before we leave for the day, I toss in a wash. Job done. Traveling with only a carry on bag affords you a level of freedom I wouldn’t be without.
I’ve actually tried rule of 3 for the past 6 holidays. I enjoy going to laundromats, a way to meet people. 2 shoes: one to wear on plane and a good pair. Mix and match everything and layering. All purpose jacket (on plane). Minimal, small makeup, liquids etc. Deliberately bought an under-seat bag to keep it minimal. Very practical tips for the sceptics. Thx.
Even though we pack differently I always appreciate that you give actual practical advice instead of social media inspired "hacks." *_old clothes_* - Packing clothes you're about to throw away is the most eye-rolling hack people pretend to do. Do you really travel wearing clothes that are old and frayed or have holes and stains or were disfigured in the wash? Oh, it's just underwear and t-shirts. Really? You can use the same clip to ensure the curtains close properly. 😂 You know I love your "tips" videos. 👍👍
Good to see some sensible packing. It took my wife a couple of trips before she realized she was lugging a ton of stuff she didn't need with her. And if she did need it, she could just get it there. Now we travel just with carryons whether it's 5 day or two weeks.
My list is a quarter bag of meds 1) Antibiotics 2) Ammodium 3) Off Spray 4)Cold meds and lozenges 4) Grovol 5) Cough syrup 6) A all in one sewing kit 7)First Aid kit 8) Scissors 9) Vitamins 10 ) Lysol Spray 11) Compass 12) Small tool kit 13) Shoe shine kit 14) Small travel iron 15 ) Pain Killers 16) Tide pods for laundry and fabric softner sheets 17 ) Converters 18 ) Maps 19 ) Razors and all personal hygiene 20) Mini binoculars 21) Hat or hats 22) A small bag of Carpet Fresh 23) A bottle of rubbing alcohol 24) A small bottle of vinegar. In Spain and France Codeine is available without a prescription and in Greece antibiotics are available without a prescription .
In case you forget a power adapter: 1) Ask the reception if you can borrow one from a "lost" pile. 2) Most flat screens TVs have at least one USB port (turn your phone off, turn the TV on - and charge). 3) Look for a supermarkets or a electronics chain - they will be much more cheaper than a "on-the-go" giftshops.
I used to be I will carry everything I’d need for a 2-3+ week vacation on me, so I have something new for not only everyday, but maybe I’ll utilize 2 in a day which of course made not only the process of packing longer, but the weight/bulk unnecessary. Now there is no need to wait for a piece of luggage. Everything moves by much faster & comfortably.👏
@@bravoninetyseven I was scheduled to go there in 2 weeks time but have cancelled plans for now (but planning to go back once travel is less risky and things get back to some some of normality)
I would love to see a two-week video for winter travel, by you and Jocelyn. I'm going to Bavaria for two weeks in December and I've been watching all your videos! I don't see a lot of travel packing advice for winter vacations. I'd love to keep it in a carry-on. Thanks for all the great advice!
Probably too late for you, but here's my advice: Pack a thick hat, warm pair of gloves, a thick scarf and at least one pair of comfy and warm trousers. It's gonna be cold, especially in january and february. Lots of undies and shirts. Also, add hand cream, your skin will need it. And of course, the usual stuff: medicine with prescribtions, toiletries, phone with USB cable and adapter for European plugs etc.
@@saschamayer4050 Thanks! I appreciate it! Not too late, since last year had to be delayed once again. So this is the year, finally doing our 2020 trip.
Whenever possible, I like to pack old clothes that I no longer want on trips. This will free up room in my bag for souvenirs and gifts. Great video, Mark!
I do the same. Too many times I traveled with someone who needed to buy another suitcase while on vacation. It's also a good idea if your destination has cheap things you would want to stock up on, like clothes, wine, electronics, etc.
I did the same on our first trip abroad. I thought it was a good idea then but now when I look at my pictures I wish I hadn't worn old clothing and was dressed a little nicer.
This is a big help. One suggestion I have is look at Oneil Hybrid shorts. They are nice enough to golf or dinner in them yet are quick drying and great for swimming in pool or ocean. Spent a week in Maui in my 2 pairs. Literally from ocean to shopping. Also when packing avoid cotton. Yes its comfy but it takes forever to dry and will hold a funk. Wool or Alpaca is great. And no wool is not warmer. I wear woool socks and boxers dead of summer 90F days backpacking.
A pair of fitted, stretchy black jeans were the only pants I needed. Wore then on the plane, while hiking or going out somewhere nice and they never look out of place since they pair with everything.
Thanks Mark. We did a trip through Poland, Czech republic, Hungary and Croatia with a carryon each. It was tight, but manageable. I keep a bottle of Woolite for color clothes to do the washing in the sink. We are going to Switzerland, Germany and Austria this winter. Hopefully this virus is subsided by then.
One thing I like to pack is both an extension cord with three outlets, and a three outlet plug. And I packed that in my day pack to increase by possibility of charging my phone at a coffee shop with a remote outlet. Or for a hotel like yours if the outlet isn't close to the bed I can get the power source close to the bed with the extension cord. I've run into that issue both in Ireland and an old hotel in San Francisco we're fortunately I had the extension cord at both situations. I also use a CPAP machine which makes my packing a little more than I would like and makes convenient power access critical. Thanks agree with everything you say here. I didn't see a phone charger unless you keep that in your pocket.
Here are some more items which shouldn't overload your backpack or carryon: 16L superlight day pack for your day walking example 4Monster; 10-12 foot extension cord with 2-3 plugs; 10oz hot/cold water bottle that fits the bottle sleeves on your backpack; super small razor w/usb charging, (mine is 2 ½" tall, 1 ½" diameter); mini umbrella. Also, you only need 3-4 sets of underwear - get Ex-Officio, they dry in a couple of hours are super wicking and don't retain smells.
I’m super happy I already did a lot of the things you mentioned! I feel like I graduated from Travel U! P.S. I have been currently traveling for over a month in Spain / Portugal / Greece... I just had to wash some clothes in the sink and dry in rooms or if a place had a washer bonus!...
Good video. I travel with just one bag and very little clothing. I wash small amounts of clothing daily and travel with about eight meters of trick line rope so I can use it as a clothesline. Keep in minimal. You'll thank yourself on the road. Cheers.
only thing i reacted on was the beer opener, great way to make friends with europeeans, we allways know how to open a beer bottle with what we got on hand
Love your travel guides Mark. I've used a few in the past in my Midwest US travels. Getting ready to do some traveling this year and used this guide as an aid. Noticed that during the 2020 pandemic starting up. I'd advise to re-upload/update with post-pandemic advice if you have any. As always keep up the great work. Cheers.
I would add a sewing kit and a small first aid kit for cuts and blisters. A multitool can be helpful too. I don't mean like a fullsize leatherman necessarily, but I have a miniature version (though probably only bring one if you have a checked bag if it has a blade). It might not come in handy every time, but when it does you'll be glad to have it. I also keep a plastic camping spork with me so I can eat snacks in my hotel room. There are more things like superglue, zip ties, electrical tape that can come in handy sometimes. I've had the connecting end of a USB cable break before and I've fixed it with electrical tape....was glad I didn't have to go out hunting for a new one late at night. I'm very much a budget traveller if you can't tell. I also go to events with stuff that might need fixing on the spot with no time to go searching for supplies around the city.
Excellent. Carry on vs. check. I always pack a spare pair of underwear and sox in carry on just in case I check the small carry on luggage and it gets lost, I have a spare pair. Wear all the heavy stuff. Planes are colder to keep folks from getting nauseous. Also shoes. I wear the walking shoes and try to pack a pair of light weight shoes for dressier occasions. Shoes take up room and you have to be careful with these. Like the fact you roll your cloths, too. The idea of taking a big bag and checking it is passe. You don't realize how much you will have to handle your own bags and they do get heavy.
I went on a 16-day cruise with three days in Barcelona before boarding. I used the suggestion of rule of five with my packing. I might’ve had seven of a couple things, but the concept worked well for me. While the ship did offer laundry service for guests, I had laundry bag that I bought off Amazon, and I did my own washing with no extra charge. I found creative ways to hang clothes around my tiny cabin to dry, and I was glad I took duct tape lol. Someone had left a broken clothes hanger in the closet. I used my tape and splinted the hanger with a wooden coffee stir stick. It was almost as good as new.

Wish you would do what to pack for winter when you are going to where it gets to -15 or colder for 3 months, it seems to be all the same, people packing small for summer...I hate summer and only go to places in winter...
I'm going to Italy and Greece in june and I bring clothes I can wash out in sink and hang up and only 2 pair shoes one I have on and 1 more and not more items I will not use...
Why do I feel like the novel Coronavirus Is more a mass panic than actual issue. I will be travelling to Germany in May and am very excited!! This video helped immensely.
Heads up!Just tried to visit your online store and there is nothing listed….Just blank space where items should be. Will the store be open soon? Cheers
Very good advice, although the Italy 🇮🇹 moment unfortunately wasn’t perfect timing, but as you said this was recorded last year. I understand people are concerned about the coronavirus, but not many people are aware that a holiday you booked for India 🇮🇳 can suddenly change when the government decides that your visa is cancelled and you may be quarantined because of the coronavirus. Israel 🇮🇱 also introduced a recent law that anyone who comes has to go to a 14 day quarantined place. Imagine that if you booked for Israel, this law would affect your plans. Also don’t forget the potential disruption of airlines cancelling your flights or they go to bust. So make sure you have travel insurance that could possibly cover these items.
Hi Mark, great video. About the laundry thing- we rented an Airbnb in Calabria this past summer and we factored in the laundry and picked a place with a washing machine. Unfortunately it was broken and the village didn't have a laundromat. Ended up doing 6 people's laundry in the tub! Thank heavens for synthetics which wash and dry so quickly. There's always a curveball! Keep up the great work!
We use the rule of two when it come to pants. Wear one and bring one. Good enough for two weeks. Compensate with the added space of bringing all the underwear we own. Always carry a spare outfit (sans pants) in our carry on. Everything else goes into the single suitcase. Love Osprey as well.
Mark… I keep hearing in other videos that Americans shouldn’t wear shorts - they’re a dead giveaway indicating American tourists. I’m going to be in France in July and I really don’t want to wear long pants! What’s your opinion???
Great tips! We also wear travel vests with interior zippered pockets. That’s where our valuables, documents and some electronics accessories go. Those free up a lot of space and we don’t have to play the airlines carry on game. Those also work great walking around in Europe. A very effective pickpocket deterrent. I use a PacSafe bag for storing my cameras, extra batteries, filters, etc.. along with our medkit.
Late October/ early November in Ireland has me worried I won’t pack the right stuff. Should we pack exactly what we packed for the UK at the same time of year ?
Hi Mark question do they normally weight your carry on? For Europe travels ? I am a woman and a mother lol, and you know how we pack? I am planning to go for two weeks and would like to take a carry on and a backpack. Please help me
Walter puleeessse be our " tie breaker" ! :)When traveling through Europe, do you keep your families passports ( 2 rooms ) :A) together in 1 of the room safes B) split between 2 hotel room safes C) together on one parents money belt D) each person wear a money belt and carry their own Regards to you and your family and Thank you for all the helpful travel videos!!!!
In some European countries D is mandatory. In the Netherlands, it is the law that you have to be able to produce ID on request to a police officer. For non-EU citizens, that really means you need to be able to produce your passport. Always carry copies of the key pages of your passport (the page with your personal details plus the pages containing any visas you are relying on) - ideally several copies split between your travelling party. This will help if a passport is lost or stolen.
Money belts? Damn, you must go to some rough areas. I carried my passport with me on my first trip to Germany, but after that I left it in the room for every other trip.
whats up with americans and "travelling to Europe " . is it because Americans don't leave their country very often and if they leave it they want to visit 15 countries in 2 weeks ?
"Ladies, kids all kinds of staff" 😁 Mark please address the issue of coronavirus this summer. I have watched your live chat a few days ago where you mentioned that you still plan to travel. But what about now? Did you change your mind?
Mark, were booked to travel to Spain for ten days leaving this week. I am 44, wife is 42. Sons are 13 and 15. Were all healthy with no pre-existing conditions. We’re spending 2 days in Madrid where the most Coronavirus cases in Spain are. My question for you is, would You cancel if you were me?
@@dee74raz Guess the airlines haven't heard because there are still flights coming in. Check the flight trackers. Flights aren't banned, European travelers are.
polifatts I wonder how Americans in Europe are going to go back? Would they fly to Canada and then take a flight to America from there, as the ban doesn’t include the rest of the other continents.

Wish you would do what to pack for winter when you are going to where it gets to -15 or colder for 3 months, it seems to be all the same, people packing small for summer...I hate summer and only go to places in winter...
Hey 👋🏽 mark
Would you recommend suitcases or backpacks? Would love to see a video on that please!
Cheers from Vienna!
At least we have your travel videos for the time we stay at home... :-)
Reading these comments - what a tough time. This virus is impacting so many people. The travel industry is going to be in such shambles.
Check cruise stock???
It will bounce back.
I noticed you rolled instead of folded your clothes. Do you think this is more effective?
Yes. I feel that it works better
Helps to prevent wrinkles too, and it’s more space-saving! :)
I hope by summer we can travel to Europe (Italy) this summer ...
Love your travel tips Mark! What type of tripod are you using?
Thank you so much Wolter! Super!! Your video really helps me!
COVID? lol
So you wash your clothes, periodically? In the room? In some laundromat? How about a quick video on that topic?
Heads up!Just tried to visit your online store and there is nothing listed….Just blank space where items should be. Will the store be open soon? Cheers
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the travel ban. I hope it doesn’t last long. It’ll be a sad year without European travel, especially Germany
He would be compensated if he was planning to go to Europe in the next 30 days I believe
Great video man
Hi Mark, great video.
Great packing tips, thanks for sharing.
We use the rule of two when it come to pants. Wear one and bring one. Good enough for two weeks. Compensate with the added space of bringing all the underwear we own. Always carry a spare outfit (sans pants) in our carry on. Everything else goes into the single suitcase. Love Osprey as well.
tommye dodson ...exactly what I did! Huge space savings
I pack the same size for one week Tenerife...
Great video Mark! Thanks.
I love packing videos! Really enjoyed this one. Would love to know what power converter that is that has the 4 USB ports.
I need to look for that one. It gets used in our normal house too because of all the usb ports
Where is this Europe you refer to? Do you suggest the same articles for Portugal as for Kosovo?
Mark… I keep hearing in other videos that Americans shouldn’t wear shorts - they’re a dead giveaway indicating American tourists. I’m going to be in France in July and I really don’t want to wear long pants! What’s your opinion???
Packing for Europe? What country is Europe? Are Trakia, Kosova, Moldova, Vojvodina, Andorra part of what you pack for when you mention Europe?
Mark, Is that an Opsrey Porter 46? If yes, any issues with it as a carry-on? BTW, respect for rocking a Surface :)
How much contact solutions did you pack? How did you bring enough while keeping it under 3-1-1?
This is off topic, but can you make a video about the corona virus and your thoughts about the virus and traveling becuase of it?
Yes
No extra shoes? I'm a runner so packing running shoes and running clothes is also necessary. But otherwise similar to what I pack.
thanks for the video mark. we're leaving for a 2 week trip to london, paris, cologne and ghent at the end of this month and this video is very timely!
Late October/ early November in Ireland has me worried I won’t pack the right stuff. Should we pack exactly what we packed for the UK at the same time of year ?
As someone who lives there , pack for rain and wind and if it doesn't it's a miracle.
Francesca Moss that is ok I guess cause we are Canadian and we don’t get cold easily.
When I was in Ireland in 1999 in August I needed jeans, t-shirt, sweatshirt, windbreaker/raincoat everyday. I was surprised how cool it was in August.
Mark , where were your shoes/footwear?
what is the model and brand of that back pack you are using?
Hi Mark question do they normally weight your carry on? For Europe travels ? I am a woman and a mother lol, and you know how we pack? I am planning to go for two weeks and would like to take a carry on and a backpack. Please help me
Hi Mark,
Do you have any thoughts of travelling to Europe (or.. anywhere, really) now, given the current situation with the coronavirus?
Mark when are you going to the Isle of Man
So if your shoes get soaked .....?
Is my 34 liter osprey manta pack too big for airplane and daily carry in Europe?
What's the weight of your carry-on with all the carry-on items loaded in? Tks.
My packing list for international travel in 2020: Face mask, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, paracetamol, enough books to last 2 weeks in quarantine.
And that's just for travelling to work!
Good old 2020
Mask, gloves, sanitizer & enough clothes to last an additional 14 days.... 🤣
Don't forget a row boat to get you there. Because you're not flying to get there.
@@chuckdraper7776 lol
This will help if a passport is lost or stolen.
thank you David :)
Money belts? Damn, you must go to some rough areas. I carried my passport with me on my first trip to Germany, but after that I left it in the room for every other trip.
good info Wolter, thank you!
Don't you have a pair of slippery/flip flops to wear in your hotel room? for me, it is essential
I am the same way, I never walk around barefooted in hotels.
Love all of your videos. Thank you for all of your fantastic advice👍👍
You have more then one plug lol.
What type of shoes do you use?
very helpful video!
Bring a bottle opener or ask your German friend to open it. We know a couple hundret ways to open a beer bottle ;-)
Why not a tent
What kind of shoes do you recommend?
whats up with americans and "travelling to Europe " . is it because Americans don't leave their country very often and if they leave it they want to visit 15 countries in 2 weeks ?
"Ladies, kids all kinds of staff" 😁 Mark please address the issue of coronavirus this summer. I have watched your live chat a few days ago where you mentioned that you still plan to travel. But what about now? Did you change your mind?
WHERE, WHEN, & WEATHER.
What size osprey bags do you use?
I'm always wondering why people bring contact lenses...
Mark, were booked to travel to Spain for ten days leaving this week. I am 44, wife is 42. Sons are 13 and 15. Were all healthy with no pre-existing conditions. We’re spending 2 days in Madrid where the most Coronavirus cases in Spain are. My question for you is, would
You cancel if you were me?
I tell everyone to look at the cdc's website and make their decision based on their recommendations.
Well Donald Trump has now banned flights from Europe to America for 30 days. My advice get your money back
@@dee74raz Guess the airlines haven't heard because there are still flights coming in. Check the flight trackers. Flights aren't banned, European travelers are.
Woke up to a new vid. Yesssss
We are still putting them out during all the coronavirus scare.
Do laudry before everything is dirty 😅😂. A tip.
Great tips thx!
Interesting timing on this video.. The US just banned all travel from Europe for 30 days.
polifatts I wonder how Americans in Europe are going to go back? Would they fly to Canada and then take a flight to America from there, as the ban doesn’t include the rest of the other continents.
@@dee74raz They will probably be put under a mandatory two week quarantine upon arrival in the US, like the people from the cruise ships were.
@@dee74raz They can fly back. It doesn't apply to Americans returning home. They will have to be screened and possibly quarantined of course.
Do you edit all the videos on the surface ?
Have you been to Bermuda?
