Descendents - Wendy (demo 86)

Another Descendents bootleg; no wonder if they still have so much good unreleased material. The first 16 songs are studio demos recorded between 1986 and 1996, sound quality ranges from good to excellent, and most of the songs are great, too. The remaining 11 songs are live, most are noisy and forgettable, some are OK, but the last track is a great cover version of X' Los Angeles. If all bootlegs were this good the record labels would have a lot more to worry about.

Saw them play at TT the Bears Place in Cambridge maybe 1985-6 ? They blew the roof off. Bill Stevenson (drummer) had a heavy and thunderous style that set the tone for the songs. He was one of the heaviest non-heavy metal drummers around at the time and wound up playing in Black Flag also. He really put the power in power pop. Bands like The Decendants ( and others ) really wrote the playbook for later acts.
Singing about feelings was tough unless you were Iggy Pop or the Ramones - who cared, and risky.
A new direction and feeling kicked off during the 1980’s and at least in my mind the Decendants led the way expressively which is why they still connect…
