Watched it too at the theater, the first half of the movie is spectacular, was completely hooked.

I think our expectations got a little bit out of hand, lately. It's a perfectly fine movie and it's FULL of action.
From a directional standpoint it's well crafted. Picture how many modern clumsy directors like Johnson would've butchered it.
The length serves its epic approach but I admit there should've been more plot points to fill it.
Nonetheless, imagine how we would speak about it if it came out in the 90s.
I think every action fan skipping it in the cinema is hurting movie making in the long run.

What do you define as "full of action? There's literally two action scenes in the whole movie. Then a few instances where a gun gets fired. In a 150 min movie, that's hardly full of action.

I shouldn't spoil it but the movie starts with an action scene. Then I can think of 3 additional long scenes just from the top of my head. And there are many incursions of action now and then.
Indeed we got a little tired of all the action chase scenes. But a movie is not all action, the world building was very good, imho.
But plz understand that I view this from an old school perspective. Sure, there is less action than a Marvel Movie or a TikTok clip but often the oh so high regarded pinnacles of action (for example T2, MadMax, Die Hard) oftentimes only had a few major action scenes with a LOT of dialogue in between.
Apparently, Miller wanted to make his own goofy Ben Hur (which also had action scenes, btw). Most viewers nowadays wouldn't even make it alive through that (grandiose) movie without sleep coma.

tldr: I think when even (good, not great) movies like this tank we'll got more cheap ass travesties like Matrix4.

@@FalkFlak Spoilers is fine. But the start is basically a elongated motorcycle chase with a gun shot every few minutes. Stuff is happening but it goes on a bit and isn't as much as I would call an action scene. The convoy scene is easily the highlight of the whole movie.

What about the bullet farm scene? I'd say it was pretty awesome.
Technically, the assault on the citadel (with the hooks and cranes) is an action scene, too.
If we'd not stretch it that far even the scene at the end like that (gazillionth) chase scene with the sand pit is one, too.
I get it that the movie tries to claim more gravitas by length than it has and that it's a flaw. But it's really no big issue, I felt immersed in the world.
I understand that we both basically liked it so there isnt even a big discrepancy.
But there are a lot of channels who border to boycott a fundamentally well crafted action movie.

I thought Fury Road was awful, so I'm not in a hurry to watch this one . . .

Fury Road wasn't great so obviously this one wouldn't top that with a bigger budget
