I heard Maggot brain for the first time on acid and since then my life has changed, Eddie Hazel should get more praise. I love the early albums where he gets attention. Good thought bad thoughts is also magnificent.
There’s nothing better than looping the Maggot Brain chords and letting rip, a great way of expensing deep emotions through the channel of the guitar. 🎸 ❤
Fantastic chord play, love this lesson. I'm a huge fan of Eddie Hazel and Michael Hampton. Thank you for breaking this stuff down. Keep it funky!! Obviously the studio version of Maggot brain is untouchable, but the Houston 1978 version by Michael Hampton is up in the stratosphere of channeling emotions via guitar.
@@georgemoore5414 I agree. But I am nailing my colours to the mast here - they are the best band ever. My logic is that if you put P-Funk in their pomp at one end of a field and any other band at the other, eventually everyone would be at the P -Funk end. Including the other band. :-)
Great one, gonna watch this a couple of times. Eddie Hazel was the man. Maggot Brain and let's not forget Red Hot Mama. Hope Eddie Hazel riffs is coming soon. Loved it.
Great video but I’m 66 yrs old .. saw them play several times in columbus ohio at the ball of confusion club .. vets memorial …. And the agora on ohio state campus . I play guitar .. and it was sly and funkadelic and mothers finest .. etc etc … but you make it sound like we use to do as teens trying to figure out the chords appreciate
Your an awesome player/instructor/music history teacher. Great temperament with a dash of Humble Pie. I used too play Cosmic Slop. Then years later came across One nation under a Groove. The single note notation took me a moment. However so fun to learn. Thanks so Much.🤗
Bravo!! Well presented essential stuff! We need a session featuring Ray Gomez - his live performance on School Days (Stanley Clarke Live, 1974?) is one of the scariest things I've ever heard, and that's just the intro solo. I assume you're familiar with Ray!
I believe that song is Friday Night, August 14th and what a bad bad song that is! Liking you more and more each day man keep it up! Eddie Hazel is definitely one of my main influences, much appreciated that somebody is giving him the attention he deserves. His only solo record Game, Dames, and Guitar Thangs are essential listening as well. Peace!
You really make your knowledge of the Guitar and your music history seem so easy to understand!! I've always loved and appreciated the Guitar but my newfound total admiration has really hit me hard at this time in my life. I come from a long line of musicians, especially stringed instruments from my fathers side but unfortunately I didn't grow up around or have the chance to be influenced by him. My love for music goes back to childhood and I have to say I truly love it more than ever. MUSIC IS MY THERAPY 💜🎸💜🎵💜Long story short, my goal is to at least learn the basics of playing the guitar by the end of the year. I love this particular music style, along with pure amazement at my favorite of all time artist since I was 13, PRINCE. I can't begin to say enough about that man!!! Pure genius of music and instruments. And my 2nd favorite is STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN 💜. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU FOR MY TEACHER!!!!! I love your calmness and your knowledge definitely shows!!!
LATE NIGHT, thanks for the funkadelic chord lesson. I'm guessing a John Frusciante funk chord lesson coming up soon? Chris Duarte uses some funk chords and jazz fusion scales
Great tutorial! A lot of the songs u showed are personal favorites of me too. There is sooo much in this music to discover and enjoy. Not only guitars, but keyboards, drums, bass, crazy lyrics, hiphop samples you name it! As a guitarist Maggott brain is a must know. But I also really like the parliament style, and like u said it's hard to tell the difference over time.
Pretty cool Dave. I had started to listen to Maggot Brain before but never made it past the 1st 60 seconds. I appreciate you expanding my musical interests and that's not the first time. That was awesome. Always Great content. Thanks Dave!
Super inspiring lesson! I became aware of P-funk via Buckethead. Years before that my friend had a dog named Bootzilla, which I didn't understand at the time. Thank you for showing all the great riffs! I hope I can try to incorporate some of it.
Are you going to show more Funkadelic, Parliament Guitar Music ? Nobody out there is showing much of this great music. It should be a tab book on this music ...
Funkadelic, Frank Zappa, and Frederic Chopin were my three go-to listens when I was in high school. The triple F's, much like my grades. Awesome video, man. If you ever wanna do a 3 for all on Michael Kidd Funkadelic Hampton, I know the perfect video.
Ok I promise to only do this once(unless I ever see you in person) Haaaaaaaay here comes the Brewsterrrrrrrr....Aaaaaah Yeeeeeeah! Great timing David I am putting a 70's ish band together! So excited!
I saw Faster Pussycat live twice in 1990. They did this little jam where they said shit godamb get off your ass and jam. I never forgot that and it took like til 2006 for me to learn Faster PS, got that from Parliament. They were also on Casablanca records, because in my Kiss Alive record's inner sleeve Parliament's record was being adv ertised.
Hey - you left out Parlafunkidelimenic! lol Man - I never know what to expect from you, but I didn't expect this! I've said it before - I think you and I share about 98% of the same taste in music. Another great presentation, dude.
Funkadelic featured the guitars. Parliament featured the horns. Same players even for the solo projects. George had them all on different labels. Prince, Peppers etc were fans of P Funk.
Blackzappa! - what a fun choice to showcase. If you are considering requests, it would be great to see dissections on Larry Coryell and/or his Eastern counterpart Kazumi Watanabi. Dare I ask for some Holdsworth?
Harry Cody, Dio AND Funkadelic! You seem to live in my musical brain. I'd actually like to see a Derek Frigo one from Enuff Znuff. He was a huge EVH fanatic, great player, and sadly succumbed to drugs. What about the fantastic Ronni Le Tekro?
The difference between Funkadelic and Parliament was Funkadelic is the rock side and Parliament since they started as a singing group the Soul & R&B side, that's why they got brass on that side, it's the same thing Prince done with The Time cause he got this concept from George, also the group originated in New Jersey and not Detroit Also another note is, Eddie came back in the band while Mike Hampton was in the band because they got Mike while Eddie was in jail, I believe "Electric Spanking of War Babies" is the last one he recorded with Funkadelic but he's on P-Funk All Stars & George's albums too
Great vid, thanks for the tutorial! The No Compute section doesn't finish the last few chords, does anyone know what they are please so I can finish it off, it's eluding me a bit...
That's the way George Clinton made /intended Funkadelic 2 be, it's silly and it's serious at the same time, if you pay close attention some of the album titles & track songs, there's meaning in the metaphors! for example; Cosmic Slop song about a young female doing the Jezebel to take care of her kids, all while praying to God to forgive her in the middle of her sinful endeavors, and then there's Maggot Brain! It's a state of mind... then....the condition & position of your ass!! free your mind and your ass will follow.... in Parliament/Funkadelic you're getting a heavy dose of reality in a silly yet serious format, which takes the edge off daily life! u know like when you work hard everyday...its the agony of defeet! U dig!😀✌👍👍
I wish someone would make a channel like this for keys, especially within a lot of the styles you cover. Stuff like Funkadelic, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Sly and the Family Stone, Rainbow, The Black Crowes, Steely Dan. If anyone knows of one please tell me.
All the funkadelic albums are guitar lesons eddies album is a rare classic check out his rest in p album and the stuff with ruth copeland and the toys album
I heard Maggot brain for the first time on acid and since then my life has changed, Eddie Hazel should get more praise.
I love the early albums where he gets attention. Good thought bad thoughts is also magnificent.
This is what Prince and Jesse Johnson and Andre Simone and DeAmgelo and so many others listened to and learned from. Awesome job brother.
Is there anything this dude doesn't know about the Guitar! Blows my mind every time!!
There’s nothing better than looping the Maggot Brain chords and letting rip, a great way of expensing deep emotions through the channel of the guitar. 🎸 ❤
Those "No Compute" chords are phenomenal. It was like hearing from an old, dear friend.
Probably where Prince got the idea for his title song DOES NOT COMPUTE (name not music).
That guitar part is actually by Garry Shider (not Eddie) and is a classic gospel quartet style chord progression.
Funkadelic was a band of musically geniuses... Just incredible artist and were truly original. No one sounds like em
It’s awesome to see someone finally giving Eddie hazel lessons, it would be dope to see a Eddie hazel three for all
The best band ever. Loved this video, even as a non guitarist. 😀
They are the best funk rock band of all time. They were able to play any style of music
@@georgemoore5414 I agree. But I am nailing my colours to the mast here - they are the best band ever. My logic is that if you put P-Funk in their pomp at one end of a field and any other band at the other, eventually everyone would be at the P -Funk end. Including the other band. :-)
@@robmichael-phillips6051 I would say Isley Brothers are also able to play any genre
Great one, gonna watch this a couple of times. Eddie Hazel was the man. Maggot Brain and let's not forget Red Hot Mama. Hope Eddie Hazel riffs is coming soon. Loved it.
Garry was no slouch, nor was Ron
Surrender the Funk ;) Maggot Brain forever ! Outstanding work , as ever .
Great video but I’m 66 yrs old .. saw them play several times in columbus ohio at the ball of confusion club .. vets memorial …. And the agora on ohio state campus . Was looking for a bit of insight into Parliament/Funkadelic stuff, and you have brought it to me Dave!
Thankyou
Nice to have some variety in the genre’s of all music. Reminds me of Trower’s chordal play.
Eddie Hazel was the man, great choice for a video!
Great lesson Dave, your chordplay lessons are the best. Thank you for picking groups/players we don't always see on youtube.
Funkadelic is law.
Bootsie Collins just arrested me
Your an awesome player/instructor/music history teacher. Great temperament with a dash of Humble Pie. I used too play Cosmic Slop. Then years later came across One nation under a Groove. The single note notation took me a moment. However so fun to learn. Thanks so Much.🤗
Who says a funk band can't play rock. So says George? So say we all! Forever funkin on
Nice! Wasn't expecting you to take a left turn into Funk. Thanks for this!
Just subscribed...been an Eddie Hazel fan for a while now...would love a part 2 to this
The way they fit parts together - such masters of knowing of using space and time.
Think it is Ron Bykowski playing the solos on I'll Stay on his trusty SG - probably a 1971 - 1973. Same one he used on Cosmic Slop.
Bravo!! Well presented essential stuff!
We need a session featuring Ray Gomez - his live performance on School Days (Stanley Clarke Live, 1974?) is one of the scariest things I've ever heard, and that's just the intro solo. I assume you're familiar with Ray!

Good to your earhole is a fav of mine and have been searching for chord progression. Thanks
You couldn't have described Funkadelic any better 👌🏾

Cool stuff, digging the funky vibes, thanks!
Cool lesson - many don’t delve into the funky side ...
Would absolutely love "Chordplay - Winger"! Reb Beach is a master class guitar player
Tks again . I didn't know about this band . It sounds so cool and groovy....I 'll check for sure
Nice curveball, David! Perfect way to round out our educational studies at Late Night Lessons!
This is awesome. Diggin' the variety. Maybe we could get some Winger next!
Thanks for this, P-Funk is head and shoulders above all the rest.
You’re definitely a star child my man

May the Funk be with you.
Very nice chord progression from Friday night August the 14th Funkadelic free your mind and your ass will follow great album
Sir, you are absolutely correct. I myself prefer
Funkadelic.
Best guitar instruction on interwebs.

You need to do a part 2
seriously good video man, subbed
We love the funk
Really Enjoy your page.
One of my favorite bands! But you’re right, gosh it was hard to keep up when they had about 30 people on stage hahaha! 🤣🎸🎼✌🏻
Funkadelic is awesome!!! "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On" is a purely guitar fest!

great lesson! would you teach me how to play JOLENE - funkadelic?
this is gold
Cool..not a lot of funkadelic stuff out there.. nice to see to appreciation for them
Funkadelic featured the guitars. Parliament featured the horns. Same players even for the solo projects. George had them all on different labels. Prince, Peppers etc were fans of P Funk.
Great stuff but Funkadelic’s original members are from Plainfield, New Jersey.# truth
Have you heard Edwin Birdsong Super Natural album/Ronald Drayton on guitar/ One of the baddest Funk Rock albums in the history of music!!!
Listen to that CD almost daily! Got the vinyl when it first hit in 1974! So totally relevant... RIP Edwin Birdsong and Ronnie Drayton
This video is amazing!
Thanks for this Funkadelic is underrated...they have some of Greatest guitar players..out..Eddie actually knew Hendrix....Can you do some of the licks
They met once at a afterparty buddy miles hooked it up
I lost my virginity to side b of clones off Dr funkenstein every album is mandatory listening if you have a pair of ears. Love you Dude !
Would've loved (was hoping) to have learned the guitar version of the intro to Flashlight. Transposed from keys.
Cool lesson
Have you listened to Captain Beefheart? This lesson reminded me of the Icecream for Crow LP by them
Great Video ! Can you show how to play intro to I GOT A THING ?
Thank you for doing this! Although I miss 'Red Hot Momma'.
Blackzappa! - what a fun choice to showcase. If you are considering requests, it would be great to see dissections on Larry Coryell and/or his Eastern counterpart Kazumi Watanabi. Dare I ask for some Holdsworth?
A Parlifunkadelicment thang :)
I'd love to know what pickups you're using :P
(Subscribed btw, great vibes)
Five seconds told me the grove was right on point.
funkadelic was formed in Plainfield New Jersey, not Michigan.
Harry Cody, Dio AND Funkadelic!

Listened to Parliament Funkadelic growing up. Just getting into guitar. All standard tuning? Or 1/2 step drop, for Hendrix sound?
Quite possibly the baddest rockers ever.
Hey Dave any chance of doing any of the funk rock of Trapeze “You are the music we’re just the band, Hot Wire, Medusa... Long Live Mel Galley
what is your first pickup?
