    That's an excellent top-five list, although I haven't skied Kicking Horse yet. Alta-Bird is my favorite ski area in the US. In my mind, the only other places that might make this list are Telluride, which, if memory serves, is similar to Taos in the steeps department, and Mad River Glen, which is quite different from all the areas on your list-probably an honorable mention.
    I grew up skiing, racing, and patrolling back east in the '60s and '70s. My favorites are Mad River, Sugarbush, and Stowe in Vermont; Wildcat and Loon in New Hampshire; and Sunday River in Maine. Tuckerman Ravine can be fun in Spring when the weather is good, but it's a five-hour hike.

      Thanks for the recommendations. I thought about making Mad River Glen an honorable mention but listed Alyeska as I have been there in the summer and have seen the steeps first hand. I thought about doing a trip out east this winter but kept hearing that it would snow and then rain so the conditions never warranted the flight.
      I was concerned Kicking Horse wouldn't live up to the hype which is why I made the trip this year. I'm glad I went out of my way as it really made for a great place to ski. It was the highlight of my Canadian trip this year. I highly recommend it.

      Love Taos and Telly, but they both suffer the same fate as another favorite (Crested Butte)...no snow.

      @@nadakidd I keep planning trips to Telluride but cancel because of snow conditions. Some day I just need to go regardless. Crested Butte had good snow when I skied there but the lack of it kept a lot of the steep stuff closed.

    Too bad the conditions were not great at Lake Louise when you were there. If you come again, hit the 'Gullies' which are very steep (gully I being the steepest), ER 3 & 6, Swedes, Big 7. You will be impressed.

    What about crested butte the body bag run/ Rambo, Palisades fingers/chimney/ McConkey, Breckenridge Wack's Chute? Pretty impressive runs

    • @matthewbennettutah
      @matthewbennettutah  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the recommendations as they are all impressive runs. Growing up, I always thought Palisades had some amazingly steep stuff but when I returned recently, I found it to be a lot more tame than I remembered and so I didn't add it to the list (look for an update to my Sidecountry video where I give kudos to the area).
      As for Crested Butte, I love that place and had a great time when I skied there. I've gotten a lot of comments about Rambo not making the list. When I was there, it was unskiable due to lack of snow. I've since done a bit of research and it never has enough snow so that you are always dodging rocks. I have to question if you can really call it a run. It sounds more like a cliff sprinkled with snow every once and awhile. That being said, it is a very steep run and kudos to anyone that skis it. I left Crested Butte off the list due to the other resorts having quite a few steep runs to choose from.

      @zhezhang3055 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did Rambo this season, there is some exposed stone close to the entrance and probably you can get into the run from the trees on the right side. When you ski down 1/4 of the run, there are no more stones. But I am thinking about going back to it sometime later because there are lots of challenging routes in the Phoneix bowl and third bowl. Body bag and deadend chute will make you miss Rambo.@@matthewbennettutah

      Thanks for the recommendation about Revelstoke as I wanted to try it on my last trip to Canada. Unfortunately the lower half of the mountain didn't have a lot of snow. A lot of people staying at Revelstoke made the 2-hour drive to Kicking Horse to ski there. Perhaps next year.

    Tell me you skied the wallet th-cam.com/video/ew9K_W5hXyc/w-d-xo.html
    Also, I'm with you on that the runs need to be longer than 15', but that said, day for day I get more enjoyment out of Soli than Bird. The latter is simply overrun with people and turns to hard pack in about a day...sadly.

      My first seasons pass in Utah was to Solitude but I switched to the Bird after a few years because of the terrain. I agree that the Bird has gotten very crowded and so I only ski it on weekdays and non-holidays. Sorry, I did not ski the Dutch Wallet.

    Watching the peak of skiing or what we are really watching is it's demise. We have seen vastly the increase of prices on and off resort just ski rocket .
    Sure you thinking (till you worked at one) the price is what it takes to run the place(s) is in reality farfetched thinking.
    Maybe your new at skiing ( I hope you are) or maybe a long skier/rider have noticed or accepted the little things not done or skipped over think it's for now and will be taken care of, will never happen.
    The very first thing that any money goes to anymore is to the investors. The last thing any money goes to is the resort.
    So Keep an eye open for the deterioration, methodically grow.
    Though working part time as an instructor. I seen behind the scenes just how the initial cuts are made...
    But, when the milking runs out, the investors leave, you'll have a run down unsafe ghost of a resort rot that new how to emptied your pockets. By the taking something of fun and destroying it while you paid for it...interesting isn't .

    • @matthewbennettutah
      @matthewbennettutah  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Seems a bit off topic but you are not wrong. This past week I had friends from Japan staying at my house who commented on how climate change has dramatically shortened the ski season in Japan to the point that about half of the ski areas there are closed down. So you have climate change conspiring against skiing on one side and out-of-control prices on the other. That is a recipe for decline in the sport.
