    4:10 This is probably the most missed rule of Istanbul, that you only have to pay one of the resources, but you have to be carrying the amount shown on the card. For Example for the card that has 2 pineapples at the top, you have to be carrying 2 pineapples but you only need to pay 1 to get the tile. If it has 3 Pineapples at the top, you have to be carrying 3 pineapples but only need to pay 1 pineapple, etc. I think it is not an intuitive rule at all.

      The iconography is very clear on the mosque tiles.

    Well, at least this is language independent, which is nice. And it is refreshing to have euro with some other end game goal than collecting most points :) Modular board also looks appealing.

    Istanbul was renamed with the creation of the modern state or Turkey. It basically means "the city" and this is how it was called by common people in the previous centuries. Before Roman emperor Constantine renamed the city in his honor, it was called Bizantium. This is why we call the Eastern Roman empire in the Middle Ages "Bizantine empire", though nobody used this term back then.

    I played it twice and I agree with the review: very nice game.
    Rules seems a bit difficult at first, but they are pretty intuitive.

    It would be interesting, I think, to watch a "Top Ten Spiel des Jahres so far", divided in "Top Ten Games of the Year" and, more interesting, "Top Ten Connoisseur-gamer Games of the Year".
    It would help us to do some very useful reflections and comparisons.

    Originally called Byzantium, it was renamed Constantinople when Emperor Constantine made it the capitol of the Eastern Roman Empire. When the Ottoman Turks captured it, they renamed it Istanbul.

    • @zottirgen
      @zottirgen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's actually wrong. The city's name was still Constantinople (official name was Kostantiniyye in Ottoman language) until the fall of the Ottoman Empire at 1918. Only after the foundation of the modern Turkish Republic in 1923, the city's name officially changed to Istanbul.

      this is actually not quite certain as the city was called in different names way back. Istanbul, derives from the Greek phrase eis tin polin (εἰς τὴν πόλιν), meaning "(in)to the city" The Bulgarian called it Tzarigrad. meaning the City of the Ruller. So the 3 names was used alongside durring Otoman Empire.

    Hey Tom, On the Mosque. The buildings only ever "cost" one of the goods noted but you have to "have" the listed amount in your cart. Just a small point of clarification.

    It's a very fun game also Istanbul had many names before not just Constantinople and now it is called Istanbul and Constantinople is not used you can not call New York New Amsterdam because it once called that, also Istanbul is a new city as old town which was Constantinople is part of Istanbul which is 10 times larger with many more districts comparison 3 times bigger than New York. It is Istanbul end of discussion.

    You told you don't know why they renamed the city. Constantinople was Capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. After it has been take over by the Otoman(Turks) the Roman Royal family escaped to nowadays Russia (they started it) and the formal capital become Istanbul as a new capital of the new growing empire.

    I've just recently got into the wonderful, wonderful hobby of board games. Because I live in a country without much interest in them I mostly rely on the internet for recommendations and reviews. Tom Vasel is usually the best reviewer, and I usually agree with him.
    BUT WHY ARE YOU THROWING THE PIECES IN SLOW MOTION?! ARE YOU MAD ABOUT THE GAME?! HAS IT WRONGED YOU?! THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY TO DISPLAY THEM!
    THIS PHYSICALLY MAKES ME CRINGE, PLEASE STOP!!!

    Tom you said you don't know why they didn't named it Costantinople. Because most of the Turks finds that offensive. And Germans live with Turks. They know about this. For example i bought Ticket to Ride : Europe and the name of our city wasn't Istanbul. I didn't care but when my father saw it he said how did you buy this game. It insults us he said.

    • @R1ncew1nd88

      Tom was comically referring to the song by The Four Lads

    • @StefanoPProductions
      @StefanoPProductions 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      "Ticket to Ride: Europe" is set, I believe, in the years 1910s, before the city's name officially became Istanbul. If you look closer to the map, you could also notice that it still represents the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

    • @metinfb37
      @metinfb37 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Su Pi I don't think the name was Constantinople when the city belonged to Ottoman Empire. I know when Ottomans conquered it they didn't name it Istanbul right away but in 1910s it wasn't Costantinople.

    • @zottirgen
      @zottirgen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was Constantinople until the end of 1920's. Maybe you should read your own history first, then come bicker at people

    • @metinfb37
      @metinfb37 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually read my history. That was kinda my mistake. Because in our old literature (poems) the name istanbul is used. But you are also right. The official name change was in 1923. But the change made it so that the common name in spoken language should also be the official one. I didnt want to bicker at people. If my choice of words came through as such, it is only because my garsp at english language was not very good two years ago.
