  • Part I/III titled "The Inspiration and Sure Guide to True Christianity Today" from Fr. Seraphim Rose's insight on the centrality and essential witness of the Orthodox Holy Fathers. Fr. Seraphim highlights the witness of recent men who have faithfully witnessed to the vital importance of the Holy Fathers, such as St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, St. Theophan the Recluse, and Archbishop Theophan of Poltava (+1940). He discusses how knowing the teachings of the Fathers guides us amidst growing modern academia, ecumenism, and other soul destroying falsehoods and heresies.
This article was first published in The Orthodox Word in 1974 (Vol. 10, No. 5 (Sept.-Oct. 1974), pp. 188-195).

I knew Fr. Seraphim. He was a real light in the darkness--and continues to be that light almost 40 years after his repose.

Did he have a bright personality or aura about him?

@@davidvuganeza It's difficullt to put into words but I would say that he had, not a visual aura, but you could sense spiritual power emanating from him. He was always kind to me. When I realised that the Thebaid life wouldn't work for me, he told me not to beat myself up over it, that I should keep looking, and that if it was God's Will for me to become a nun, I would find the way. It's been a long and sometimes difficult and strange road, but here I am, over 40 years later, a Schema nun through his prayers and the intercession of my patron saint. St. John Maximovitch of Shanghai and San Francisco.
i wish you could have been at services when Fr. Seraphim was still with us, especialy the All Night vigils--the church lit only by candles, the wind rustling the branches of the trees outside, the sound of us singing... I'm nearly 70 now but I still remember. That was a time like no other.
How strange to think that 40 years have passed since his repose. Forgive this sinner's rambings but your question brought forth somebeautiful memories.

This is so important. Indeed, I don't think an insignificant amount of this has entered the Orthodoxy Church today in North America. We must all cling to and take responsibility for the teachings of the Fathers. What excuse do we have? Orthodoxy is our own hope. Christ have mercy on us.

Fr. Seraphim's journey to the foundations of the church is pretty much how I felt about Protestantism, I'm so very sick & tired of the constant face off. It led me to the Lord's prayer (John17) which has led back to the true way (Christ) beginning in Acts (the church) ultimately & inevitably leading me to Orthodoxy. You are the church to which the gates of hell did not & will not prevail, which for me means there is no option, I can not unsee what I've seen. I prayed the Lord would show me the narrow way. The way of Christ's church can only be the way He taught, the way He handed to the Apostles, to the fathers, the orthodox way through the one, true, catholic, Apostolic church. All this is so foreign to me, I've spent 100s of hours listening to Orthodox stuff, even went to a Greek Orthodox Church last Sunday (I was late, and it was in Greek). I'm a broken vessel, a fish out of water, I don't know what to do, how to start, my whole life is Protestant, even though I contend with perpetual emptiness it's familiar emptiness. Do I just keep going to church until the Lord prompts the priest to approach me, or do I pursue a lay person to introduce me? I don't know the protocol. Please pray for me, I need Christ, I need to be where He is.

Matthew, God bless you. You have found the Church and it’s going to be a greater blessing that you are pressing through the waves to embrace Her. Go back again to the parish and introduce yourself to the priest after Liturgy. If you are nervous, ask a layman to help you. But one way or another, get a moment of the priests time and ask him if you could meet with him sometime and/or tell him you are looking for help to learn more. If you have specific questions about parishes and priests in your area, email me and I can try and help further. I am connected with Orthodox Christians in many different areas so between us we can help you in that way. May God enlighten and may you know more fully Christ Who fills all in all in His Church.

i was raised Lutheran, but knew Protestantism was not for me. I becae Roman Cathoic, but the abomination of Vatican II reay wasn't what I was seeking. Finally in my latetwenties., I joined Orthodoxy in an OCA church. Eventually I went to the Synod in Exile. I'd written to Fr. Herman asking for some oil from the vigil llamp of St. John Maximovitch and asked if he knew of a parish church of ROCOR that I could attend. A week or so later, I received a package from Fr. Herman and a note, "Yes, we have parishes, but you don't want that, you want monastic life". I had never said anything in my letter about wanting to eventually become a nun, so how he knew this I have no idea.
Orthodoxy is so much more wonderful than Catholicism.

This should be thought in every theology faculty, in every seminary. A theology major only made of Seraphim Rose teachings and similia. Maybe then priests would be a bit worthy of their ministery and wouldn´t mess people up with their wickedness, poor spirituality and false teachings.

Can anyone please explain why? Although , our lord, Jesus said not to call any man father, yet these priests and Catholic priest, BOTH want everyone to call them father ???
Not only do they openly reject Jesus instructions, But encourage others to joining their rejection/rebellion.....
Where in the SCRIPTURES can you oppose Jesus Christ's words and not become an antichrist??????
Jesus also said that when the blind follows the blind, they both fall into the ditch.....
Jesus also said that if anyone rejects him or his words that he would not judge them on that day of judgement, But that the one who was going to judge them was the WORD....
I personally choose to follow Solo Scriptura, " only the Scriptures "
And I test all spirits/doctrine against God's SCRIPTURES.
    This is a salvational, sin....

    • @OrthodoxWisdom

It seems the Apostle Paul did not understand Christ's teachings the way you do. He refers to himself as a father when speaking to his spiritual children in Corinth: "For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel" (1 Cor 4:15). Furthermore, at the beginning of his letters to St. Timothy and St. Titus, he calls them "son"... does this mean he would reject being called "father"?

    • @user-lm7qk3ib9z
      @user-lm7qk3ib9z 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Paul's referring to himself or others as fathers, ie, fathering is not an invitation to being addressed, called, or titled as fathers especially Holy Father....
When anyone makes Jesus Christ's words void then that makes them antichrists, or do you also dismiss/reject all scriptures which condemns your, unholy teachings.
Was Jesus not referring to calling priests father???
How dishonest, I thought you were claiming to be God's children,
Peter said that brother Paul's teachings were hard to understand, for those unlearned in the SCRIPTURES. Moreover Pete went on to say that these same unlearned, rely on their misunderstanding, to their own detriment/condemnation...
Out of Love for God, I am commanded to warn others of their sins....
Watchman on the wall when you see someone sinning and say nothing their blood (sins) are upon you. Howbeit, if you warn them and they continue sinning, their blood (sins) shall be upon them..
Did not Paul in saying goodbye, claim that no man's blood was upon him ????
Repent, perhaps God will forgive you!
