- My first mountain camp with my X-Dome 1 didn’t get very far. For your info this is a summary of the tent breaking, the weather conditions and forecasts on the day, the capabilities of the tent according to the manufacturer’s website and some info and updates too
🆕 UPDATE 10/02/25: Dan informs me that the next batch will be manufactured with metal corner tabs and an extra tie-out point on each leg so there's a good chance I'll get on better with it next time! I'm also getting replacement poles, so I'll update when I get to try the new improved version :)

Helloo Wild Ones! So, the X-Dome failed the ol’ WildBeare Torture Test. I’ve put together as much info as I could for this, typically I didn’t have my wind metre with me on this occasion as I wasn’t expecting it to be a bad-weather-tent-test kinda camp but I estimate the winds to have been a fairly constant 40-45km/hr as it progressed, maybe up to 50km/hr. I reckon they were a bit stronger at times than was forecast. From plenty of experience with 50km/hr+ I don’t think they were that strong as they weren’t having an effect on me (I wasn’t being buffeted about or having any trouble standing or walking). But they were constant and annoying and coming in at an interesting angle down those cliffs behind straight down onto the lake
Personally, I don’t think both lightweight and ‘stormworthy’ exists in pole tents - I think you choose one or the other. I think this is a great tent and it performs in wind how I would expect a lightweight pole tent to perform. My only issue is, I don’t feel that the marketing terminology is quite right for it. As with all lightweight pole tents, this is not a shelter I would want to find myself out in on a long-distance trail when a storm rolls in, unless I was in a very sheltered spot - often not possible in the mountains or on the open moors, or if the wind changes direction
I’m sure Dan will be able to give his professional opinion on what happened with the tent (I’m just speculating that the poles coming undone resulted in the crossbar break) and what I could / should have done differently here - this will by no means have been a perfect pitch on my part but you just do what you can in wind haha! And thanks again to Dan, for his interesting discussion, patience and brilliant customer service
As always, a pleasure to get another shelter out in our unhinged UK weather. Hope you guys are all good, much love! CB 🌿🐻
UPDATE 10/02/25: Dan informs me that the next batch will be manufactured with metal corner tabs and an extra tie-out point on each leg so there's a good chance I'll get on better with it next time! I'm also getting replacement poles, so I'll update when I get to try the new improved version :)
My god your location is stunning. It takes a certain type of crazy person to go out in that weather. This is why I stay in a car.
Do you think that your x-mid would've survived?
I'm shocked at what mine can comfortably handle.
I think our Robens Midnight Dreamer was a really good choice to use it for motorcycle camping. It is much, much heavier than the similarly cut motorcycle tent we tried before (but sent it back due to serious condensation issues), I looked at other 4 person tunnel tent options. I mainly chose this one due to the many options it gives from very hot sunshine up to very windy conditions. And is has not disappointed - great tent.
@wildbeare - you should try the opposite end of the spectrum and go for an UP-2 Bear tent.
I don't think Frank survived your torture test either. We haven't seen him since Christmas and hangovers don't last that long. 😂
Your tenacity is exceeded only by your sense of humor….
Loved the Wildbeare News Network… Great Post Claire! 👍🏻🍻🤣
haha thanks! :)
Thanks for the kind words, feedback, and nice discussion we've had about the tent. Here's a general comment on what happened for the viewers that haven't been apart of our conversation and then a few replies to some specific topics.
GENERAL COMMENT
My goal with the X-Dome is to make a tent that is ultralight and also quite capable, but this certainly is a trade off since the lightest tent won't be the strongest. So the X-Dome has lower limits than a 4-season tent will but I think is quite good for an ultralight 3/3+ tent. We've yet to see one break when it is set up properly and we have many verified reports of people using them in windy conditions of 60- 75 km/hr.
What I think happened here was a combo of a few things. It was high winds for sure, an exposed camp spot, and then the tent didn't have it's normal structure in place because (1) the corner pole has become disconnected, and (2) the trekking pole was not in the recommended upright position to support the tent. Without either of those supports, the tent is missing almost all of structure on that side, which allowed it to deflect enough to break.
More specifically, when the tent is fully assembled the tent poles are under compression that holds the sections together. Here they were coming apart because not all the clips were in place. It is hard to get all the clips in place when it is windy, but had the rest of the clips been added (e.g. the top clip) before moving on to the crossbar I expect it would have created the compression to hold the poles in their normal position. Without that, the sections were able to slide apart and disconnect, losing the structure in the corner.
The optional trekking pole supports are important to add in very windy conditions like this, but they should be placed on the same plane as the crossbar and not tilted over to the door. Similar to how a pyramid tent will collapse if the pole is steeply angled, the supports here can't help much if they are strongly angled over to the door. The pole can be tilted to the door as a trick to avoid a door stake in friendly conditions, but that is not supporting the crossbar nearly as much which is why in the 'Storm Pitch' section of our pitching guide we show position it at the center. If the pole was vertical I am confident it would have supported the cross bar enough to avoid the break even with the corner disconnected.
Overall, my understanding of the cause is that it was an unfortunate gust of high wind when the tent was in an vulnerable state. Pitching is always more vulnerable with any tent, and then here some clips not being connected and the pole being angled resulted in further vulnerability. Suggestions to improve this are (1) fully connecting the clips before moving on to the crossbar, and (2) positioning the trekking poles in the center. If the conditions are too harsh to do that, there are a few ways of modifying the process further, including pitching it with the trekking poles first and only adding the tent poles later.
How to communicate the performance of the tent has been a challenge because I do think it really is stronger than other tents at this sub 1 kg weight and normally does perform quite a bit better than the situation here, but certainly it's still not nearly as strong as 2 kg Hilleberg. My intent was to say it is stronger and more stormworthy for an ultralight tent, so originally the wording was unprecedented stormworthyness "for the weight" (I think this is true), but I could have communicated this better and have since updated the site (as you mention) so that is more clear now and also some other changes to communicate this better. Also I think there are cultural differences in how the term 'storm' is used. In North America it tends to be apply to all rainy/windy conditions so people would be comfortable in most "storms" here, while in the UK it seems to mean high winds specifically which the tent may not be suitable for. I think the max recommended wind speeds added to the page will help to clarify this.
NEW COMMENTS
1) For the trekking pole supports, yes they are most effective when they are vertical because then the wind can't push the crossbar down. This is what we show in the 'storm pitch' section of the pitching video. Angling the pole over to the door stake is a trick to avoid using a door stake but intended for friendly conditions because it doesn't support the crossbar nearly as much. When the pole is vertical the wind can't push the crossbar down, whereas when the pole is angled the wind can still push it down. So in tough weather a vertical pole is the way to go and once implemented I think largely eliminates the type of failure that happened here because the crossbar can't flex much with the pole there.
2) The tent poles sliding apart is not something we've seen before, but I think is related to missing clips. If all the clips are connected then poles are under compression so they shouldn't slide apart, but with only some of the clips the poles can move around more. Getting the lower guylines in place early as you did is a good thing, but still the poles won't be as solidly in place until the clips are fully connected, so I think a safer process would have been to clip up the top of the fly too, to the tent poles . And then work on the crossbar.
3) For the trekking poles only pitch, I will make a video on this in a few months once the snow melts here in Canada. Essentially what you do is stake the 4 corners of the fly and then add the trekking poles as the next step, while also deploying the guylines from the tops of the trekking poles. Then it forms an A frame shape (similar to your Gossamer Gear The One). It will have loose fabric on the ends because they are curved/dome shaped but adding guylines to the ends can pull this out. One guyline works in a pinch, but 3 guylines per end is ideal (one at the hub and one at each of the guyouts). Like that it pitches into pretty much it's full shape without even using the tent poles. It's a neat trick if someone does break the poles, and also probably is the ideal way to set it up in rough conditions like you experienced. The tent could be setup with the trekking pole supports, and then the external tent pole frame could be added afterwards where the existing trekking pole support greatly reduces the vulnerability of the tent poles during setup.
Overall, I'm glad you're mostly liking the tent. I appreciate the feedback and agree with your main message that tent pole tents lighter than a Hilleberg are a risk in stormy UK conditions. I think the X-Dome can do quite well and had it been fully assembled I think could have handled this wind (we have seen many people using them in verified 60-75 km/hr winds) but assembling a lightweight tent with only partial structure during high winds is tough to do so I will give the best method some more thought.
- Dan Durston
Hey Dan! Thanks for typing all this out for everyone, I know we've had a lot of discussion about it all 😄 and really appreciate all your input
I'm only just realising what you mean by the trekking pole placement! More vertical and not flush with the door would have been so much better. I was assuming it was just supposed to go flush with the door with spike into the tie-out point but can see how a more vertical pole would provide more support. I'll do this next time
Yes that's interesting about the poles coming apart, I don't think it would have held up to the wind if I hadn't applied the guy lines midway through clipping the tent to the poles though, the wind would have just taken it out. Agree, just a partially-assembled tent issue, not sure how it can be avoided, I just don't think lightweight pole tents are suited to these kinda conditions (particularly not to set up in, but often you don't have a choice about that of course)
That's great can't wait to see a trekking pole only pitch and give that a go, I think I can see how it would work and it will be a great thing to know in a pinch.
Deffo think it's a great tent and love all the features (as covered in previous viddy). It's only the 'stormworthy' stuff we disagree on, but as you know it's not this tent in particular I just don't think that any lightweight pole tent should be marketed as stormworthy. Also lost me MSR Hubba NX poles to wind on a sunny March evening. I don't trust poles haha.
Thanks again and have a great weekend! Claire 🌿
To be fair, Dan, “quite sturdy” ≠ “stormworthy.”
Dan, a couple of us here have noticed an interesting design choice at the 90-degree connection of the brow pole: there is no flex or rotational play in the 90-degree connector, so the poles themselves are left to take up any shearing forces. When the aluminum pole joint is placed in the connector eyelet like this, it, rather than the (fiberglass?) sections of the poles must bear the brunt of the wind. Simply offsetting that pole connection by a foot or two, so that the pole flexes, rather than the aluminum joint might be enough to rectify this.
@@kerry1383 But, hey, kudos to Dan for taking the time to communicate, acknowledge Claire’s criticisms, and show interest in providing consumers with a video that can offer better guidance for inclement weather set-up. Kudos, too, to Claire, for being transparent and fair in her critique. I have seen many tent makers and countless TH-camrs who have both been less forthright.
@@jorymil It is true there is no allowance for side to side movement, but (1) that helps support the crossbar in position - if it could move side to side it could 'wag' in windy conditions and reduce stability, and (2) the bulk of the force is going to be up/down so I don't think side to side movement is a notable stress. The main stress is when wind hits the sidewall then it pulls straight down on the crossbar. At low-medium winds the crossbar is fine for that (like many other tents with crossbars) and then in high winds that force can be too much which is why the trekking pole supports come into play because they guard against that.
Someone always worth watching - open and honest and always great adventures . These are rare characteristics in this day and age . 👏👏👏
Everything is doom and gloom, then you sit down and find there’s a new WB video and the day brightens. ❤️
I am a dinghy sailor, the signs are that was a force 6-7 squall, which is too much for most sailors, any tent would have been very challenged by that, but also, wind accelerates over water. Also, with the wind coming over the mountain top, the air pressure on the windward side is higher, as the air gets compressed against the mountain, so that when it comes over the other side, it is like a tightly compressed spring being released, causing it to accelerate. I would only camp next to a lake in light winds. I really like this tent, I'm going to get one, but I wouldn't pitch it high up in that weather, in fact I just wouldn't camp there in that weather in any tent. Love your videos, please keep them coming 🙂
Absolutely agree.
"with the wind coming over the mountain top, the air pressure on the windward side is higher, as the air gets compressed against the mountain, so that when it comes over the other side, it is like a tightly compressed spring being released, causing it to accelerate"
Air pressure and wind does not quite work like that. Because of the compression effect on mountains the highest winds are always *at or near the summit* . Flat or lower-lying lands in the lee of a mountain are generally always going to get the lower wind speeds than the summit. However in this case she was already at some altitude (near a summit) so the wind speeds were higher because of that. The mountain was not that much higher and gave minimal shelter, especially with the lack of any tree cover, a quite telling sign really.
That’s what I was goiyto say if I had a brain
Thank you so much :) yes I agree (is force 6 40-50km/ph?) any tent with thin & light poles would have likely got busted up, but we encounter these kinda winds often here in the UK mountains, often unexpectedly, so I'll stick with me Hille or the trekking pole tents I think! I wasn't being pushed around by the winds though, I have plenty of experience in 50km/hr+ and they've felt much more forceful than these did, so I don't think they were over 50km/hr. Very constant and annoying though 😄
If there’s low pressure when the wind hits the mountain it’s forced up to go over the top the low pressure accelerates it down the mountain face and speeding up across the water…
If your going to camp near water make sure you have a wind break in front of you if the geography doesn’t give you that move away from the water and find a more suitable spot ..Most tents can be used in bad weather it’s picking the pitch to suit the tent not picking the weather to test the tent ⛺️I was caught out with Michael Fish weather forecast years ago and the tent was a complete right off and trees were blown down all around us ,it was a miracle as one of the tree limbs caught a falling tree that would of killed us our tent right under the falling tree..so I have experience in bad pitch sites albeit I was trusting the bbc weather man 😂🤣 who said the weather would be fine and light breeze we were hit with a Hurricane ..😂🤣😄😃1987
I love all you do Claire, you are the best. Your knowledge, your humor, you intelligence, everything. You inspire me to get over my stroke and get back out there. thank you
Claire,
I just want to say that your honesty and personal reflection on situations is so lovely and true.
I really appreciate your clips on here.
Huge thank you.

He's here!
This tent is stormworthy!
What? - Why did you do this, you can't use it in a REAL storm!
He’s always lurking 😂
@ , that’s a good thing. Shows a person that cares about their products.

I simply adore those spectacle frames 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Cheers to your challenges. Bravo to your fortitude and sense of humor. Manufacturers try to compare themselves to Hilleberg. But, there is no comparison. Thanks for what you do. Wishing you peace and good fortune. Happy Trails!
The news desk was a nice addition.😊
Woah! That was quite something to see. You deserve a gold medal for giving it a shot. I am now the wiser. Thank you! 🙏
oh dear ... that was unexpected .... new desk I love your sense of humor x
Hi Claire,
I love your brutal honesty about things going badly, your not bothered about putting the fails, the bad bits of equipment or you when you have joint issues. I think you have a wonderful sense of humour and can't wait to see what you get up to next.

Hey Graham! Aw thank you, hope you had a lovely weekend :) Claire 🐻

Haha thanks I debated sticking Frank in there but thought it may have been too much 😄 have a great weekend :)

Very nice News Desk Claire !
Thank you 😊
Oh my gosh!!! Bless you for trying!!!! We don't usually recognize it, but, any success we have has been built on a mountain of failures....keep going!!!! You challenged the tent....not the other way around. The tent ( and their claims) failed. Thanks for the video!!! Keep 'em coming!!!!
Thank you! 💚I do think it's s great tent, maybe not for UK mountains haha. Have a nice weekend :)
@@WildBeare If it can't handle the UK mountains, it would definitely not be able to handle the Alaskan mountains....that saves me (many, many thanks) the possible disaster of trying it. And not to diss the tent....it would be great for low level hiking adventures here...just not the mountains. You provide a very valuable service with these videos!!!
@@deeannpetty3831 I don’t know Alaskan weather except from YT videos, but as a veteran backpacker, I’d never chance it without a Hilleberg. It seems to me that the weather extremes there just warrant the added security of such a tent. I’d probably also carry double poles unless the forecast looked remarkably, sustainably good. 😅
@ I do believe you're right!! I'm looking for light yet durable. I was in a near fatal car accident years ago but have severe whip lash in my neck and back. I absolutely adore hiking and camping but I have to do my due diligence first and make sure everything is within parameters that I can handle!!! And we camp from the beaches (to go dipnetting) to the mountains (my favorite). So I'd like a one fits all kind of tent...but that may not be possible. Thanks for your insights!!!
@@deeannpetty3831: Excuse my ignorance but what is dipnetting? I haven't heard of that before.
The closest I can think of was trying to catch stickleback fish in my local park when I was a young boy, with a small net on the end of a bamboo pole.

Yep, that’s why I don’t like freestanding tents. But as to “storms”: We were visiting the Grand Canyon, staying in a hotel, and the TV news was full of warnings about an incoming “tropical storm”. It reached us around midnight and I went out to take a look (as you shouldn’t!). Honestly, it was maybe 30-40mph winds and some rain. I doubt it would have rated even a yellow warning in Scotland. I laughed, went to bed. Next morning it was carnage. The roads didn’t have decent drainage so every dip was flooded, lots of roadside fences were down, the posts evidently only a foot or so into the ground. So, yes, I think “storm” means different things in different places.
Oohh no, haha you Scots are hard as nails when it comes to the weather! Yep 30-40 is just a standard mountain forecast in my experience too, or maybe I'm just unlucky on my free weekends but it seems to be blowing a hooley at least half the time 😄 thanks for watching :)
Great littl’ vid as usual and loved the newsdesk section. Was really hoping you’d say “molecules” when you put those glasses on. 🤣🤣
Love the news desk. Informative and fun, love it 🤩 Great video as ever, thank you Claire
Thanks for watching! :)
Saving this for tomorrow morning, and my first cup of coffee. Thanks for uploading
Happy Friday! (for tomorrow 😊) ☕
I was actually close upon ordering one to replace my trusty helm compact one. Needed to save some weight and getting a bit more space. Guess I stick to that one now instead. I know that won't fail, it can take some beating. Thanks for putting it to the test.
I do think it's a great tent, the poles are just so thin and light I don't find it suitable for our UK mountain weather so far. I've spoken to Dan some more and he is creating a new fly, with 2 guy lines on each corner instead of 1, so I'll give that a try when it's available and see if it helps. But yeh generally any tent with really thin poles is always a risk in strong winds. Thanks for watching :)
Yay, a new WildBeare video…Yippee!....The highlights for me….1/ the bemused sheep watching you trudge back to the car….2/ the frantic keyboard typing on the laptop…3/ the newsreaders super-serious expression as she tidies her notes at the end! 🙂

Aw bless you thanks! Yes I'm glad as I'd rather it break when I was a few KM from the car rather than in the middle of a multi-night adventure, so I know it's capabilities better now which is great. Great tent though for lightweight purposes and more forgiving weather
Thanks for taking us on another great adventure, educational as well as entertaining as always and the introduction of the Wildbear news segment is a great addition to your channel.

Haha, it's quite an effective 5-step plan isn't it 😄 thanks :)
I've been thinking about a bivy bag since I began watching you. This video has prompted me to pull the trigger as a tent can fail for any number of reasons. Thanks for everything you do Claire. Be blessed.
A bivy bag... and ear plugs...
Seems like a good idea, if your tent fails...
My tent failed once, in the middle of a dark and stormy night... I wish I'd had them then...
I never go without one now :) even if nothing fails, it protects my bag against condensation or spills. Could save your life in a pinch if things go very wrong. You too, happy camping 🏕
I have a feeling that their marketing campaign is pretty stormworthy too and maybe they could hire you for the next one.
This was way too funny and entertaining. Thank you ❤
That was some crazy wind😮
We occasionally get wind like that where I live, but you get it all the time in the mountains where you are, and it seems to come out of nowhere! I wish my news channel would hire you!😊
As usual you made me chuckle - thank you 🍺 😂😂
Great video. Thanks for sacrificing your tent poles for out benefit, to demonstrate just how challenging it can really be to set up a tent in windy conditions. I think this and other videos give me a better understanding why tents like the Hilleberg Unna 1) Use pole sleeves instead of clips 2) Eschew the use of a cross-brow pole even though it provides more interior space and 3) Offer heavier, stronger poles as an option for truly difficult conditions.
Yes you're totally right, it's a sacrifice of strength for weight, and sometimes that's ok, it depends on the circumstances. Our mountain weather is often so wild here, I just find the lightweight pole tents too risky. But my Hille, strong as it is is often too heavy for multi-night adventures, so in milder weather I prefer trekking pole tents as there's no tent poles to snap. Thank you and have a great week :)
Claire loved the vid , ive had that happen nice calm sunny day, awoken on the night with tent smacking me in the face and a broken pole lol, glad you got back to car safe
Kudos to you for persevering as long as you did Claire, your experience will hopefully save others from finding out the hard way. Still it’s always nice to see a video from you.
Thanks! It's a great tent, I just don't think lightweight pole tents are overly suited to our UK mountain weather unfortunately haha

Totally agree with you about the weakness with traditional tent pole tents. Especially the tents with large area side walls such as the mid crossover pole versions. ie Hubba Hubba types. I was only thinking recently that on remote or lengthy tours, my trekking pole tents will be the more reliable option to take along.
What awesome videos. Great information that is accurate and useful, but with polished presentation that feels approachable. I’ll just watch each one. ❤
Well done I don't think I want that tent I hope we see more of you this year 😊😊😊
Thank you! I was thinking of picking one up after your last video, but given I'm in SoCal and as the world now knows our winds are different from most, I think I will skip it.
Would love to see every weekend a "Weekend Report" from the WildBeare News Desk!!! Fun *AND* very informative! Very glad that you made it back to the vehicle safely!
Ahh thanks haha! Hopefully made all the tent chat a little less boring 😄 have a great week :)
Thanks for putting out a very educational video that gives us all food for thought, good warning on what can go wrong, and how quickly.
The tent has a problem getting it up, that's unfortunate.
You're very sweet and you always are in good spirits. Your videos are charming! Hope you're having a great day!!
OMG
I'm going to say that I only laughed at the first part because of your post-event overdubbing which was a giveaway that you actually survived.
So yes I did laugh. There were some brilliant quotable quotes, awesome one liner gags, tongue in cheek banter lines.
And I also knew that you would have the fabulous Landrover car tent close by. So all in all a very enjoyable and informative expedition, and many thanks for bringing us all along for the trip.
❤
I admire that you never back down from a serious challenge. Just stay safe out there, Claire! Loved the news desk!!
Haha thank you, I will :)
Absolutely loved seeing your sense of humour shine with the news desk, props & subtitles!! 🤎Adorable co-hosts, they both def need names 🐑
Haha thanks! They are called Cariad (the white sheep - meaning 'love' in welsh) and Cartref (the black sheep - meaning 'home' in welsh) 🐑🐑 I got them from Zip World on a couple of different family holidays in Eryri :) actually when I bought Cariad a few years ago the nice woman behind the sales desk suggested I could have him in one of my videos, so here he is :D
@ Ahaha, that's adorable! Thank you for sharing (: Love that you followed up on her suggestion :P
Well, you, Cariad & Cartref make a very professional team ♪ 🤣
Hilarious and brilliant! I have a new favorite news anchor! Greetings from the Wilds of Oregon, USA!
loved the news desk i can see you doing interviews of other campers maybe tours of manufacturers of the products you use maybe even a 2nd channel plus those glasses are super cute take care have fun
Oh how I love your videos! They are so entertaining and educational. Thank you.
First news desk I've actually wanted to watch in years!! Even failed camping attempts are fun when we're along for the ride with you. Sleeping in the truck was more comfortable though I bet...
Ahh thanks haha! Yess the car bed is so cosy! 😍 Always glad to have it on standby, and glad I was only a few KM's away for this one 😄
I absolutely loved this video. Especially loved the news desk and want more of it when testing gear lol. Very interesting to see this feedback. I’m in New Zealand and also have totally wild and changeable weather with totally untrustable forecasts so really relate to your requirements for your gear. Keep it up Claire!
Thank you! Ooo your scenery over there looks epic! 😍 Yes it's tricky isn't it when the weather is so all-over-the-place so much of the time. Happy trails to you :)
Your courage is enormous in situations like this which could lead to extreme danger, exposure ect .Anyway all the best in your experiments with nature.Im very glad you had a planB ready.
I'm impressed she kept her cool enough after the tent failed to pack it back up the way it's supposed to be. I'd've been like "eff this" and just let it dangle from my pack until I got to the car. I'm not a believer in companies sending replacement parts for stuff once you've made the purchase, so in my mind, that tent's already headed for disposal.
Loved the news desk.
The combination of cold weather, heavy winds and damp/wet conditions can be extremely dangerous (risk of hypothermia) if the only shelter you brought is failing. Great way of reminding us of that.
Absolutely, so easy to get caught out! Bivi bag every time 💚 thanks for watching :)
I am so glad you survived! And I was not expecting the cameo shots!
Back in 2015, I was making this gear: a hammock shelter. I don't know if it was at the same time as the hammock Nube, but it was supposed to be an all-in-one type of hammock tent/shelter. Anyway, over here in the west coast of the states: in my state: we have a relay race (about 320km) and my uncle was running it. He's a big marathoner, really cool man. I was a teenager at the time, or barely of age. Anyway, he sent us (extended family) over to the 3 story beach house, and I wanted to test out the home made hammock shelter I made!
I basically hand sewed a wool bottom quilt, with down blankets, and a top quilt of the same, with a specific set up for a tarp. The weather was not awful, but the specific beach town we were in, had a random storm or something. Being the beach, there were no trees. I set up the hammock in the corner of a metal banister fencing, and was pitched about .5m off the ground. My family was horrified that I wanted to spend the night out, but I told them what I was doing, and they told me to bail into the beach house. I knew it! So I sit the storm out, and the hammock shelter I made faired very well. It survived intact, and did not fail.
Because I did this, the models I make now: they're basically alien UFOs and I park them in stealth camping tree canopies, haha. But yeah, the wind???? rip you to shreds! one way or another!!!
The news desk is a great addition.
Glad your home and safe, that’s what really matters 😊
Well, well, what a lesson. I have never experienced something similar to your experience with one exception. A very low bivvy tent with a rear small hollow fiberglass hoop snapped. I changed for solid glass and the problem was solved. An amazing video so very well done, congratulations.
Interesting, I always assumed that a low-bivi style would have less wind-resistance and be harder to break, you just never know! Thank you :)
This was, I think, poor design; the material was not suitable for the stress load on the hoop being some 2.5 ft by 2 ft in height in three pieces with two ferrules of about 4 in. The modification was to use solid glass with 2 in ferrules. Stronger and half the diameter. This modification served me and later and my son well in the Southern Alps of New Zealand for many years.
The sheep are looking at you thinking this lady is crazy. LOL 👍😊🤦♂️🥴😳
Love the newsreader Claire. New career !
I used to live in southern Saskatchewan, Canada and winds like that were quite common. You get used to walking at an angle. We called it the southern Saskatchewan tilt. Lol
Hahahaha
Haha love it 😄
The news desk was fun😂
While hiking the sw coast path in 2019 we got to croyde on the north coast the same happened to me the wind pretty flattened the tent.
Well done for trying Beare.❤
Thanks Claire!🌻🐌
lmao its such a Claire move to make a fun skit out of a bad situation 😂
You do crack me up. Love the news desk. 😂. Sorry it didn’t go so well for you this time. Glad you are safe though. 🏕️🏕️
What a bummer! When I saw that your new tent was just like the MSR that broke, I thought "only a matter of time......"
Thanks for another delightful & informative video. It appeared you were battling a near gale force wind, which is a severe challange for any tent. Stay well & safe and keep the brilliant videos coming. Cheers😄❤❤
It was almost like taming a wild animal, the tent looked angry 😂
❤
You make the dull winter days much brighter !
I was talking about few years back to some Canadian and American student's who were planning a trip through north Wales camping and biking. They had already spent a month in the lake district, and we're astonished at how changeable our weather is and they'd gone through some of their gear and replaced it with uk recommendations and ditched the American thinking of everything super light
Ahh wow yeh our weather really is something else! I think what may be considered reasonable marketing over there doesn't really work over here, tricky when selling to both!
Well done for the Newsreader spoof!
Glasses ✅ Shuffle papers ✅ Pretend typing. ✅ 😂
But most of all, it was a fair, funny, and factful comment.
You always brighten my day. Thank you ❤
wow im in love put the glasses back on pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 🤣🤣🤣
Shame about the tent, but WOW what stunning views of the landscape, the love you have for adventure is so inspiring and love the funny moments in all the videos, thanks for entertaining us wild one 🤣🌲🌳🏞💚 Also thanks for inspiring me to create my own channel and get out there more often 👍🙏🚶♂
Heyy, thanks it was so beautiful wasn't it! I went back the next night (this time with my Hille as the forecast was much the same but colder) and camped up higher with those clouds billowing down behind my tent, it was something else! (And barely any wind either, naturally, because I took the Hille out haha). Your channel is looking great :D enjoy the creating, combined with camping I think it's such a great past time. Have a great weekend :)
@@WildBeare Hope you recorded it for another video and thanks, I'm loving creating videos and learning how to film and edit better, I was a little apprehensive at first about filming my trips and putting myself out there, but it's really encouraged me to get out even more than I do. Camping is definitely good for the soul, I get told often that I'm crazy for camping in a forest alone, but I think it's more crazy being sat in front of the TV for the majority of your life 🤣 Watching people like you and some of my other favourite channels makes me realise I'm not alone. Take care out there and hope you have a great weekend too 🌲🌳⛰💚🙏
Good day, my Queen. This reminds me of a long ago gale when the tent almost got away, and you reacted with lightning speed to grab it. WOW!
I had a Vango Force 10 for 25 years, it stood up to all sorts of weather, loaned it to my niece and she lost it at a concert. Now I have a Berghaus Cheviot 2, did the West Highland Way in February last year and have been camping out all through January for a laugh, even in the snow and freezing weather. It's not the lightest tent, but great value for the £130 I shelled out.
Ooh nice, just looked it up, looks quite aerodynamic! :) sorry you lost your Vango Force! Congratulations on the West Highland Way, that must be such an amazing experience! 😍
This is why you have a Hilleberg, there are plenty of quite fancy three season tents already available,
I love my copper spur but it's also not "stormworthy"
Top vid👌
Great
So glad you got it up. At my age I have a problem with that! 😲😲
