We've been doing this play for the past few months in English class, and FINALLY were at this scene. I get to play Abby in it and I cannot wait!! This is very helpful, thanks! (And its amusing)
Daniel day lewis' performance in this movie was awesome. I watched this movie when i was younger, but the one thing that I always remembered for some reason was when he cried out "BECAUSE IT IS MY NAME!" that always stuck with me all of these years. Great Book, great movie with good actors.
@@omerd5147 I would like to hope not. At least in this version though where abigail’s age was increased and fictionalized, she is clearly a textbook sociopath without question. This is basically 1987’s Fatal Attraction set during Puritan times
Thank you for your videos on the Crucible. They are very helpful and more understanding (especially without all the crazy boys and girls in my glass never quieting down)
There is an urban legend that Abigail either fled to the outskirts of Salem to become a prostitute and was never seen again. Other people say she hopped a ship to Barbados. Nobody really knows.
In real life there was no affair between John and Abigail- Abigail was 11 and John was in his 60's. The play changed their ages and added an affair to make it more interesting. The movie is really good though!
Well all the best with it. Let me know how it went and what grade you got. I'm going to be setting it for my Year 11s as their final assessment at Easter. Very excited.
Very good videos, it helps me to understand the characters so much more. Yet, I still can't find any redeeming qualities in Abigail. She's so evil that it's almost unbelievable.
It's funny how he says it because he finally lets it out. Neither the court nor anyone else knew about Abigail and Proctor having an affiar. It was too bad Proctor yelled it out. Do you think maybe Proctor wouldn't have been executed if he left that part out?
Good question. Not sure really. He was forced to tell the court about Abigail because it was the only way he could convince them that she was lying. That society would have taken the word of the girls and never suspected foul play.
Yeah I understand your objection, there are problems in the sense that it can give people a false sense of history and what the puritans were like. In defence of Miller though I think he chose to symbolise the underlying issues of Salem village in a fictitious sin rather than have too many threads in one story. The whole of the Puritan community's failings were encapsulated in that relationship. Adultery, deceit, lies, anger, revenge. Of course one could argue that Miller misrepresented history.

If only they had the wit to interview all the girl's separately, one by one …then they would've proved it for the nonsense it was.
Exactly. That's what is done today. Witnesses and suspects are questioned seperately to avoid this type of influence.
Maybe the judges *knew* that already back then, but purposefully allowed the girls to be together in court all the time...

HOOOAAAAR! HOW DO YOU CALL HEAVEN!!!!
GOD HELP ME, I LUSTED!!!
i just finished studying this play in my english class. i always loved reverend hale
Where Proctor calls Abby a whore is my favorite part of the movie. Wish I had found these videos before I had to do my english journals.
1:50. When the drugs kick in
And to think this shit really happened. Dear God...
No it didn't
@@flare8197 It didn't? The whole Salem Witch Trials and all? You're saying that never took place or?
@@buyerofsorts i think he meant that the affair never happened, as in real life Abigail was 11 and John 60. The affair is made up, the trials weren’t.
In the play that's right. In real life they were 11 and 60 and there was no relationship
:)
12 years ago damn
i just played john proctor at the little theatre in gateshead. Just wanted to say thank you. all of your videos really helped me
thank you much :)
I play the role of Abigail in an abriged version of this for school.
these videos help.
Thank you for your videos on the Crucible. They are very helpful and more understanding (especially without all the crazy boys and girls in my glass never quieting down)
Could please anybody transcript his words on 2:50 ? I am not a native speaker and cannot understand it
You are so well spoken Sir.
I appreciate your analysis.

Thank you for this, I have my gcse english mock exam on monday and your videos have been very useful :)
I watched this in class today, and when it got to 2:24 everyone laughed so hard!
thank you for explaining some of this theme, really helped.
a quality moive and great book!!
The crucible reminds me of shakespearain movies.
In real life there was no affair between John and Abigail- Abigail was 11 and John was in his 60's. The play changed their ages and added an affair to make it more interesting. The movie is really good though!
No problem, glad it was useful to you.
Well all the best with it. Let me know how it went and what grade you got. I'm going to be setting it for my Year 11s as their final assessment at Easter. Very excited.
@taurusgirl65 basically it means to take apart, like a piece of furniture, meaning she takes apart everything around her.
I HAVE KNOWN HER!!!
No problem. Are you in Year 11? Ooooh, I wish I could see it. I love the Crucible.
i need the next bit, where its jst abi and john in the court, when Elizabeth lies
I never knew that, thanks for the information.
This woman and everyone like her makes me ashamed of being a human being.
Very good videos, it helps me to understand the characters so much more. Yet, I still can't find any redeeming qualities in Abigail. She's so evil that it's almost unbelievable.
Haha! Daniel Day Lewis is a good looking guy!
She gasped in mock-possession the moment she realized she was making a losing argument.
It's funny how he says it because he finally lets it out. Neither the court nor anyone else knew about Abigail and Proctor having an affiar. It was too bad Proctor yelled it out. Do you think maybe Proctor wouldn't have been executed if he left that part out?
True. And Abigail was 11 years old while John was in his 60s.
@mer1ve Never seen it, but I'll take your word for it.
and the executioner was rude as fuck he didn't even let John finish the speech
nice movie, in school
@DevinChief yes
this play reminds me of a movie called Savage Messiah on lifetime
The mouse pointer is really destracting
2:40, right... And he didn't have to prove many people were in contact with the devil
I have many unkind words to say about Abigail...
lol xD I totally did not realize that this was Winona the first time I watched this xD
Is anyone else angry the mound was left in the center of the video
Danforth is blind, can't he see Abigail's reaction to John admitting his affair with her??? Her reaction proves John is telling the truth.
He looks a bit like Andy from hamish and andy
Good question. Not sure really. He was forced to tell the court about Abigail because it was the only way he could convince them that she was lying. That society would have taken the word of the girls and never suspected foul play.
why is your cursor in the way? its soooo annoying!

watch
I knew The Crucible was an analogy for McCarthyism. I was referring to On The Waterfront. I've never read it. :)
I plated maratha coery in my school's fall play
thats one of the best scenes in the movie 2:27
2:48 to 2:53 the look on abigail's face lol
@taurusgirl65 I think the word you mean is 'dissemble' and it means 'to lie'. Abigail is a dissembler. In other words, she is a liar.
BECAUSE IT IS MY NAAAAAAME!
oh ok
ooo yes thanks :)
@KingOfEden12 Lmao, very true. But I just meant the character in general, ahaha. (:
This movie pissed me off
she was 11 in real life
