For those curious about the overall volume of the GO: measured at 3 ft away, it reached 90db before the limiter kicked in - So plenty of jam as a practice amp!
This amp (just like the mini) sounds much bigger than its size suggests!

@@DarrellBraunGuitar I understand your point Darrell, but I would assume Positive Grid uses the same internal electronics used in the 40 and MINI. It won't sound as big nor as loud as even the Spark Mini, but I'd wager it would be surprisingly good for it's size. I have a similarly sized JBL GO2 Bluetooth speaker and while it won't impress an audiophile, it's astonishingly loud and good sounding for such a little box. How about comparing this to other $100 amps in a room? Compare to Fender Frontman 10g, Orange Crush Mini, Mooer 15 watt, Boss Katana Mini, and Vox Mini 3. Everyone is right. Virtually no one is going to use it the way you demoed it. Please just let us hear it as it sounds in your room. Don't mic it. Just use your smartphone. If you do it as a comparison, at least we can hear it next to models that we may have heard in person, so it would be a more valid comparison, as we'd have a point of reference.

  • @EricWestphal

Why test/show only the headphone output?! The only real difference between this and the Mini or 40 is the size of the speaker. You would get the same exact results plugging headphones into a Mini or 40. So this isn't really a review of the Go, it's a review of the Spark software. What I really wanted to know was how the speaker sounds. Obviously not as good as the 40 (or Mini), but is it adequate for jamming/practicing in a small room? How about hooking it to your belt and playing while walking around? What's distinctive about the Go?

Yeah, I have the Mini and it sounds loads better than the 40 did. I didn’t mean to imply that the Mini had sound issues, but there is no debate that the 40 had serious sound quality problems upon release and both this demo and the Mini demo used direct recording. My point was that both of those reviews should have a miked up demo. Given the history of the sound problems with the 40. The whole demo doesn’t need to be miked. Just give us an idea.

Some people have already said it, but this seems a pointless promo rather than a review. Anyone buying the amp is probably using it on its own as a portable practice amp. You can plug any amp into an interface and record directly. The likes of the katana can do exactly the same. The difference here is the portability. People will want to know, if I put it In my bag to travel and plug in for a noodle, how will it sound in the room. That's the entire point of this. The bigger PG amps have exactly the same settings and will sound exactly the same used as an interface. We know what the presets sound like, what does THE AMP sound like. It'll get you clicks and dollas but this is a "review" that shows perfectly the art of missing the point

i think most people that follow a bit along, knows or have a little experiance with positivs grids software, so i find it odd that he just does yet another review of the software, or maybe he found the speaker to be so bad, that to avoide saing something negativ and risk not getting any more PG gear, he just skipped right around the problem and just highlighted the good parts

    • @joecoach7268
      @joecoach7268 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SpiritDK You could be right - I think the software is the sell for Positive Grid regardless of the product, always has been. They had software long before any of the spark amps came out. I also think that its tough for content creators to do really good audio reviews of amps in general because ultimately the sound is going to have to pass through one or more sources before we hear it on the user side. As observers, we have to rely on the integrity of the creator to fully understand the real-time experience. Based on the size of this tiny amp, my assumption would be that it will be tough for anyone to get a good quality representation of the audio experience in a youtube video. I have found Darrell to be honest and transparent in his reviews - I am pretty certain when he reviewed the Spark 40 that he highlighted the issue with the bass response which is a known complaint and even acknowledged that it was hard for him to get used to it and he had to go through a series of settings adjustments to make using the amp tolerable. I think Darrel is just such a positive guy that he may come off as disingenuous in his effort not to be a total jerk. Every creator has their own style and I think he just leans more toward not outwardly disparaging a company/product. I prefer a little more blunt honesty especially considering how much gear costs, but I still enjoy Darrell's videos just the same. ✌✌

I just got mine today, and it sounds terrible, worst blutooth speaker I've heard in a long time. No bass, sounds like a 30 year old portable radio. No bass, tinny sound, laughable for guitar with anyone listening. Maybe if you run it into a PA or real amp, but sorry, I have the 40 (love it) and the Mini (like it), this thing is going back, not worth the $120. And it doesn't sound anything like this video if you don't run it into something bigger. I have a very old exogear blutooth speaker that's the same size and sounds 3 times as big. And it's waterproof and floats.
Sorry PositiveGrid, this one is not a winner. The smaller Bose Micro sounds better. I expected a lot more.
Unless you want to wire up headphones to this thing or plug it into your computer, I'd say avoid it and get one of the others. The Mini sounds ok enough (still bad compared to similar priced blutooth speakers, but it works with the app), the 40 sounds great to me, I have it on a cheap guitar stand under my desk, lifts if off the ground and it doesn't sound too bassy to me at all that way. Everyone's ears are different.
My GO will go right back for refund, the sound is just awful. Kind of insulting to offer this in 2023. It actually reminds me of the sound those tiny cigarette box amps from years ago made.
The app software is amazing, but it's not built into this crap speaker. It's in the app. I had low expectations for such a small thing, sadly they were not met by a mile.

My Spark 40 doesn't sound very good to me with two 5 inch speakers. This Spark "go" can't be any more than a single 2" speaker ? They should have made a 60 or 80 with an 8 inch speaker that uses the software.

No, you didn't demo the speaker, but then, I watch your reviews on my cell phone... not going to get an accurate perspective on the speaker sound. You listened to it, and I've seen you make critical observations about everything you review, so you not mentioning any issues is a matter of my trust in you, which you've earned hundreds of times already!!!

Is the onboard speaker any good or is this really better used as a pre-amp and effects to drive either headphones or some other input source? I'm intrigued by this as, for the price, it seems like the ideal thing to have knocking around the house for evening practice and even taking to lessons. Thought the mini was priced just a little too high because, well, you may as well just buy the 40.

There's bound to be limitations with a tiny speaker, it's unavoidable. It's never going to push the air of a larger practice amp, or more pro amp with a 12" speaker, etc.
I would just buy the Vox VX50 GTV, which I own, or a Vox older Valvetronix amp, not that large, and you get tremendous power and tons of models and FX built-in. Then I run
a Zoom guitar processor through that, and I have all the power and FX and presets I can possibly need. Plus you can make up your own presets.

My only concern with this one is the amp being so light and dragged around by your cable(s) unless you pocket it or hook the amp to your belt. Other than that I wish for one thing considering its size:
Please include a BT transmitter at least, Would be really nice to be able to connect wireless from your guitar to your spark amp, like an affordable Yamaha THR 30 II. I would be happy with a half priced one of those in this form factor...even in the Mini.

Small amps are practical and can sound very good. Got a Marshall DSL-1 and Boss Dual Cube LX (JC + phaser and Dual Rectifier gain on 11 + heavy octave are my go to settings).
Small amps do not have the volume but for sure can have and convey the sound.
