The girl saying that one can't go on what critics say is absolutely correct, and not just for comedy either. A lot of the big [American] summer blockbuster action/adventure movies get panned by critics but do very well in the box office. Critics want to analyze movies to death and often sneer at them being simply entertaining. Warcraft got totally panned, but from what I can tell, is doing rather well.
What was great about Roger Ebert, wasn't his stars, or thumbs up/down. It was that you could read his review, and determine if YOU would enjoy the movie (or not) based on his words. I almost always disagreed with his likes/dislikes for comedies & action movies, but I never failed to determine if 'I' would like a film after reading his review on it.
