In today's tutorial, I'm excited to take you through an essential and often overlooked skill in your dog's training repertoire: walking backwards. This skill is not only a fun party trick but also an important building block for advanced training techniques. It enhances your dog's spatial awareness, agility, and focus, all while deepening the bond you share with your pup.
We'll kick things off by introducing your dog to the physical cue that signals them to walk backwards. Initially, we celebrate each small step backward with a reward, gradually increasing our expectations until the dog confidently understands the movement. This step-by-step reinforcement helps build a solid foundation for the behavior.
Once your dog masters walking backwards with the desired speed and precision, and maintains eye contact, we'll introduce the verbal command. It's crucial to say the command before presenting the physical cue, creating a clear pattern for your dog to follow. Over time, the verbal command alone will prompt the behavior, eliminating the need for a physical cue.
Additionally, we're diving into the world of conditioned reinforcers by teaching three specific markers that signal different types of rewards: the continuation marker, the terminal marker, and the secondary terminal marker. These markers are key to clear communication and effective training.
But that's not all - we're also laying the groundwork for two exciting commands: the "send away" and the "through" command, with the latter involving your dog running through your legs. These exercises are not only fun but serve as stepping stones to more complex behaviors, boosting your dog's motivation and eagerness to learn.
Join me as we embark on this journey to unlock new possibilities in your dog's training, making each session a rewarding experience that strengthens the incredible bond between you and your dog.

I really appreciate your videos. A week ago I adopted a rescue German shepherd that someone had dumped off. I spent some time with her beforehand and realized that she already had some training. Once I decided I would adopt her I started doing research on how to train her and came across your videos. I started binge watching for the first day and I have been coming back everyday. I cannot overstate how effective and efficient your training tools are. She is catching on to everyone very easily and the way you break it all down makes it fun all around. Thanks for what you do.

I appreciate this so much. 3 days ago we acquired a 4 month old female, Golden Retriever. I have been watching your videos to learn how to trainer her. My hope is that she will become an ESA for my autistic daughter. I find that the golden retriever isn’t quite as energetic as the German shepherd you are training in this video. I am able to lure her with no problem. Get her into heel and between the leg positions. Also siting as well. So I’m not sure if the lack of aggressiveness to those positions is the breed of the dog, personality of the dog or something maybe I’m doing wrong. She seems to be pretty smart so I’m excited to see the progress she makes over time. Right now I use all her feedings to train. We are 7 training sessions in and my daughter, who is on the autism spectrum has naturally joined in. She is now telling her dog “good dog,” which is super fun to see. Once again thank you for all your videos.

Since I made this comment I have seen a lot of improvement in the puppy being excited to train. It was like a switch went off in her. She lures great. I’m able to put her in a lot of great positions. The only one I’m struggling with is the laying position. But overall, I am very pleased with her.

One of the best videos I have seen in a while, keep it fluid and moving yet remain consistent, a sentence that makes no sense yet all the sense when training your dog, or something like that. Nice man, always good content.

Once the dog knows to go backwards a few steps. How do you get them going backwards until you ask them to stop

Hello! My 2 1/2 year old GSD has social anxiety. He loves going to Tractor Supply and the feed store with me, and he gets all excited whenever I get his car harness out, but he’s afraid of new people. If we walk past someone in the store, he jumps to the other side of me, and if I stop and talk with someone, he retreats to the end of his leash. Anything I can do to help him?

If you can't figure that out maybe you shouldn't have a dog.

Hand feed all puppies meals. For example schedule training for meal times when they will be hungry and ready to work for it!
