Hi, I'm Marsha with Leave A Legacy, I am here to share with you today on how to clean your negatives.
The first thing that you want to do is not clean them with water. As that could remove the image from your negative.
What you will want to do is simply use a micro fiber cloth and gently wipe both sides of the negative and to remove the dust.
If you have particularly stubborn grime on your negatives, what we recommend is using an anti-stat film cleaner. This is a fairly expensive bottle of cleaner and it is rather aromatic so if you purchase some you will want to do it in a well ventilated area.
And so what you do is lightly moisten a smooth, micro fiber cloth with the solution and replace the cap because it is really aromatic. You'll want to wipe the surface of your negative and remove those stubborn, stuck on, dirty areas. and it dries right away so you don't have to worry about it because it is alcohol based.
If you do not want to mess with cleaning the slides yourself, then you can certainly ship them or bring them into Leave A Legacy and we will do all the cleaning for you as we have done
    with thousands of negatives before.
So we hope this video has helped you determine how to clean your negatives.

Washing negatives in water won't remove the picture for goodness' sake. Negatives are developed in various water solutions and washed before being dried. (There are times, such as when negatives are stuck together, that a water bath is the answer.)And I'd be really gentle with that micro-fiber cloth, I think. You don't want to grind anything into the surface.

washing your negatives with distilled water and a drop or two of photo flow or dawn dish soap is the way to go! squeegee or use some Kimwipes after rinsing them with distilled water and your golden.

I hate to be "that" guy, especially being that I'm not an expert myself, but I question whether it's safe for you to wipe the emulsion side of the film in such a manner. The base is fine, but the emulsion is what's really the bulk of your image, correct? I've heard that imperfections to that side require the negative to be reintroduced to chemicals, then washed, as you would have during development. Also, while demonstrating, you scrubbed the negative with a back and forth motion. I'm guessing that was just a harmless act - not how you'd actually do it - just spur of the moment, as... let's say there's a bit of heavy dust or other particles, wouldn't that increase the risk of scratching the negatives? I don't know, not necessarily trying to attack the video, just caution people to think about it.

I'm not an expert either, but I have never experienced a loss of image quality by rubbing the emulsion side of the negative with a microfiber cloth. To remove water spots, I'll lay the negative on one microfiber cloth and gently rub with another. I do this to both sides, and I've never experienced a problem. It may not be the best way, but it doesn't seem to do any damage either, at least none that my untrained eyes notice.

The solution is made for cleaning film safely including the emulsion side and the microfiber cloths we use are safe as well.
