Touring is not about the size of your pistons, but it's more about the size of one's heart and the presence of someone's mind. I have known people to do long distance touring on stock splendors and yamaha RX100! While people have been unable to complete tours astride a Harley. Buy what you can comfortably handle and maintain and buy what gives you happiness in every km.

Hi Guys, Great advice for people looking for their first touring bike. I sold and rode Harley Davidson's for over 20 years. Fat Boys to Road Glides. Took a break from bikes and restarted riding at 67 years old. I chose the RE Interceptor 650. Loved the bike. Great in the city and on long trips. In December I traded for my life long dream a Ducati Multistrada V2S. The Skyhook Suspension is amazing and on the open highway the Ducati is a dream. However, 80 percent of my riding is in the city. Your advice about torque and RPM is right on the money. The Ducati doesn't like being under 3,500 RPM. So in the city too much shifting gears. Also in traffic the bike gets hot and my backside and thighs roast in the Texas heat. The bottom line is I will be trading the Ducati by next year. More power than you need except on a track. Waiting to see what RE has coming next year. Thanks, keep up the good work.
Very practical discussion, this is what I feel too. No need to get the top of the specs bikes. 30-35nm torque is more than enough to ride anywhere. I just hope the xpulse in future comes with that specs. Easy to maintain on pocket.

I have toured on Honda shine from mumbai to Goa via coastal road, around 300 km per day. It was an adventure ride in all aspects. What I observed was my average speed was 30-40 kmph due to bad roads. I never exceeded 60 kmph. I don't understand why people buy 200 + cc motorcycle just because it can cruise at 100+ kmph. My shine could cruise at 80 kmph, didn't make much of a difference. On the other hand, I could make it to goa in almost one tank full of petrol (50 km per liter, 10 liter tank), which was insane.
I have a query regarding a selection of a bike for an all india ride which may last upto 4 to 5 months.... I have shortlisted 3 bikes after test rides. Ktm 390 adventure ,honda cb 300r and himalayan scram 411. I am bit confused ..before i take a final test ride..i would like to have an opnion of you guys... Hope for a reply

Please try the newly launched Keeway 250 V-bob which is essentially a long stroke (49×62) v twin and inform if it will be suitable for touring.
