I bought one of these about 8 years ago from a surplus shop for £6 ($7.49) and I swear by them. They aren't comfortable, but if they're used as a supplementary pad for ground dwelling under a tarp they're perfect. I put it directly on the ground and then put my inflatable pad in my bivvy bag with my sleeping bag. This matt simply offers an extra thin layer of insulation but more importantly, it protects my bivvy bag and inflatable matt from sharp or pointy foliage & general wear and tear. As you say, it's also durable, multifunctional and compact. Thanks fro sharing. Atb Shaun

Just purchased one for the exact same reason, may be a crap insulator, but think it’s perfect for protecting the air mat!

Nice vid! I like the idea using it for your gear and under the hammock with tarp over top to keep everything nice and dry! Cheers

Do you know where to get those?! I've been searching for one since they are supposed to be the frame for the German alpine ruck. Right now I just cut a usgi mat

It actually is used as a backpadding for the Bundeswehr Kampfrucksack (german army combat backpack). You are right, it's very versatile, but all german soldiers I met, simply hated it. It has no insulation factor at all, it surely keeps you dry, but that's basically it. I used it and ended up cutting it into small pieces as a kneeling or sitting pad. My recommendation is: Safe some money and get a Thermarest Ridgerest, it outperforms the german army groundmat by far. Good video, Cheers, Marc

Thanks for the comment, I agree it is versatile but not the greatest sleeping mat. It would do in an emergency. Thanks for watching!
