Ok, guys, I'm not going to criticize yall, but do at least some research on the tools your presentations. First, crafsman is owned by Stanley B&D. Craftsman doesn't manufacture Mac tools. Mac and Proto share a mechanics tool plant in texas, both are owned by Stanley. What Mac and craftsman do share in common is the rebranded facom designed tools and the waterloo toolbox factory. Second, those two toolkits are different in use. One is a minimal 1/4 tool set, the other a 1/4 bit set. Facom, also a stanley own brand, is the originator of the icon bit set. It was exclusive to facom and Mac, and then the contract ran out, so HF started rebranding it for icon. Both of those sets are coming out of Rotar in Taiwan, same factory. I'm also not sure if you actually have checked snap-on prices 😅, the V @100 is a bargain compared to 300is it would cost from snap. I get it tho yall shop by price, not quality. Then V should probably be close to 65/70$. I'm not sure what the new icon will cost, probably 60ish. The V is also offering more tools, again its a different kit in use. Craftsman could probably offer the same icon bit set as stanley already does via facom.
Well said! You really know tools. You should start a TH-cam channel, and I will watch it. Did Icon rebrand this or just steal the idea? I really like all the Icon copycat pliers.
@branned it's rebranded, well the tool case was updated for icon. Technically, HF hasn't stolen anything as when patents run out, they become fair game. Great for the small guy.
Legally agree with you. I love the icon pliers. None are their design as all they do is copy. I have the snap-on and knipex versions and the copy icon versions and I like both. Thank for being accurate
Watching just to listen to you guys. Not a mechanic but work on my car and lawn mowers. Got multiple sets of wrenches, sockets 1/4,3/8,1/2 and so much other stuff. When I fix something myself I buy tools . You'all are so interesting.
The V-series is rebranded from France - Facom 1/4 inch socket set, 6 points, 38 pieces, 1 piece, RL.Nano1 which runs over $100 on amazon. Both are made in Taiwan. The Icon is small, but the V-series can accomplish way more!
The Craftsman V Series set is available in both metric and standard. I can't remember if you mentioned that. As much as I like the Icon, if the Craftsman specialty bits are the right sizes I might choose the Craftsman to carry around with me as an emergency tool kit simply because it includes the sockets, but not for $100. Only for the sale price would I consider the Craftsman. Both kits are around the right size and weight to easily carry with you on a road trip.
Craftsman one you have to purchase 2 sets if you want SAE/MM. Each set is $40 on sale currently. There is a new Kobalt one that is awesome for $20 that includes both SAE and MM. Plus warranty issues are much easier at HF compared to Lowes.
The only set that competes with that icons is the VIM, or gearwrench sets. That V series is in a different category. Craftsman is the better set and i own them both.
I like both. Already own the Wera Tool Check (that I added 2 Wera sockets so I have NO skips, and Velcro a better Ares rotohead 1/4" ratchet to) and I have the icon (that I connect a set of 1/4" mm sockets to) and l've made a couple small 1/4" and 3/8" kits out of the spare DeWalt and Craftsmen drill bit boxes. And I just picked up the craftsman 1/4" and 3/8" kits. I added a 15mm socket and switched out the ratchet on the 1/4" set to the same V-series ratchet, but with a flex head that I also got on sale. All of these kits now are very very similar in what they provide. Now I just have too many. The craftsman is actually probably the best deal, but I'd never pay for price for it.
So the Icon has been my favorite since it came out . I will say I do not own the Icon yet but just based off TH-cam reviews that’s a neat set however after seeing the craftsman one I think I like that one better . Now y’all said there’s a new icon set coming out I can’t wait to see how that pans out but yeah I really think I may pick up the Craftsman one first . Love the sockets and the ratchet size , like perfect for my hand size .
@@erik34 idk I would not be surprised. I looked several times before I finally saw them restocked on a random Wednesday when I went in there so I grabbed one. Other people here on TH-cam have also stated they are known for being out of stock nationwide so I would bet prices will rise. Another problem is harbor freight does not sell individual tools for sets like these so when you break a part in the sets they will send the whole set back for warranty which also causes shortages.
I just bought the craftsman set today! Great price. I like it and I think a bit set should have sockets! It's small and compact too. I don't have the icon so can't compare. The fact that the bits pop up to you so you can just pull one out is a nice touch! I bought some ratchets too. Can't beat the price. Y'all should do a review of their ratchets.
Another feature of the Icon that I didn't hear you mention that I absolutely love is the textured wheel on the back of the head. When I'm dealing with a screw or something loose in a tight spot, I can just move my finger up to that wheel and use that to turn it until it gets tight enough to use the ratcheting mechanism.
Hey guys, great video. Do you guys know when icon is going to release the mini set with sockets ? I heard Harbor freight talk about it like over a year ago and I haven’t heard any updates. Have you guys heard anything?
i like th ICON it works great for quick repairs at the range when shooting. Also carrying a gerber and leaving sockets in the truck i feel like its just enough to get me off the road and to a parts store if something repairable happens when i am driving. I plan to movve it all to a fanny pack with a few other things to keep nearby for other random things that pop up. Although this video did make me rethink my initial purchase.
The icon set is my secret weapon..I do have a craftsman ratcheting screwdriver that hardly gets used anymore since the icon set is my go to driver set. I watch a lot of tool channels and this set seems to be in every toolbox for good reason. Tiny locking extendable flex head that converts to a t handle....and icon has some great looking and feeling cases...fit and finish..I really feel like I'm buying high quality tools whenever I get a new icon tool.
Always love you guys. Can't believe HF isn't sponsoring you two. I've spent way more there because of you guys than I normally would...and I know you're not trying to sell anything. There are others who are sponsored by HF and they're generally spot on in their reviews just like you two. Maybe HF will pimp out a new trash can for Hunter.
@@stevennutz1109 me too, bought 2, came back, the next day bought 2, next day bought 2 more. Covered for home, car , edc, and gifts! Best tool kit I've owned that is multi-purpose, adaptable, and just bad ass. Go Harbor freight.
Just imported a 2022 Daihatsu Hijet from Bug Trucks of Tarbow Japan with an insulated box camper rear, and a marine size small wood stove haha. The craftsman kit, just picked up and tossed for the price in the kei trucks glove box for now until I assemble a dedicated tool setup for the micro truck from, harbor freight. Thinking of going all icon and quinn for the kei truck, and use the orange apache cases they have. But have to buy the tools first, scan em all, and cut foam for all the tools. Great video, and great review!
If the sears kit also included metric sockets also, it would be a much better set. They could also delete probably the smallest 5 sockets, and some of the bits for my needs. I bought a similar 1/4” set from NAPA 25 years ago? It has both metric and SAE sockets, the it 1/4” driver also functions as an extension. Not nearly as many bits, but some other items can be places inside the container. I’ve searched from something like it for years. It’s a convenient kit and I wanted to buy some for gifts and myself, the cases plastic hinge has failed and now relies on some duct tape for a hinge.
@andrestnt Because it's lighter? Help me out here. I just looked at both sets side by side and bought two of the Kobalt sets which appears to be a much better option. Craftsman: Case is about 1/4x3/4x1/2 smaller. Has security torx bits. 5.5mm socket in the metric. Better ratchet feel but performance merely feels on par. Kobalt: SAE and Metric included. Slightly larger case. Heavier but doesn't feel it by much. Triple Square bits. Regular Torx rather than security bit. Half the price of the Craftsman and normal MSRP is still 25% Cheaper than the current Craftsman price. Don't get me wrong, I like the V wrenches they put out but I'm hard pressed to see the value of the sockets which I've gotten mediocre quality out of Craftsman since 2003 compared to their older fare. What am I missing to justify the price difference?
@Accidic First, the V series is high quality coming out of rotar factory. The only thing that is meh is the ratchets. The icon is also from the same factory. FYI, facom is the original designer of the kit. Second, the cobalt kit has the worst quality, hence the cheap price. Third, the reason is that it is better to have separate kits, as you get full no skip sizes and better selection. Instead of getting a bunch of skipped sizes. The auto industry is almost all exclusively metric now since the 90s. Haven't used any sae sizes in past 6y. The best case is hands down the icon, but actual tool selection, the V, is better. Won't consider the kobalt, the quality is just meh. By all means, shop for your needs. Also, they are different kits in use. The icon is a bit set, and the V and cobalt are a 1/4 tool set. Once the new 1/4 tool set from the icon comes out, we can compare them.
@andrestnt I like the Icon set. I have two and bought my dad one. They really shine if you add a few small pieces. My experience with Craftsman sockets has not been stellar and the last two I received as gifts were meh at best (and inferior to the Kobalt). Admittedly, I haven't used the V extensively yet but if they're from the same plant as the Icon, are they any better? The Icons are fine but I'm not convinced that they would justify double price (arguably 2.5x MSRP to MSRP). It is fair point on the skip. Craftsman skips 5 of the smaller sizes (3 sae, 2 metric) but adds 3 (13/32", 9/16" (!), and 5.5mm) while the Kobalt adds are all the smaller fare. While I don't entirely disagree on the Metric thing, I find that stupid add-ons are 50/50, mowers often sae, and SBS/4w tend to be all over the place depending on manufacturer. While I'm normally Meh when it comes to bits, I was actually pleased to find them in brake hardware sizes for those that use them. And you're right, situationally, I threw a set in each of my wife's/daughter's car after gluing neodynium magnets underneath the socket tray (with a couple small for socket use) and have no regrets. Thanks for the summary and thoughts. Will keep an eye out for the sockets. Maybe They'll surprise me.
Icon has a kit in the worksw/sockets similar to that as well as genaration 2 locking flex head ratchets & new work light w/color changing light with blk light for leak detection, and not to be out did a set of icon wire strippers/crimpers like the snappy & carlyle similar versions. Big things coming in 2025 with icon line and hobo freight!
I carry the 1/4" magnetic nut drivers for sockets. The ones you can put in a drill. $5 a set at harbor freight. Metric and Sae sets available. Great for my motorcycle
Some youtuber mention that i con is coming out with a set like that craftsman. Usag gw and vim among other have a version of that i con set. Great set.
I don’t think I would ever actually do the full length extension on the Icon ratchet and then put leverage down on the bottom. Not unless I could warranty the thing same day. I wonder how hard you can go in T handle mode without breaking something.
Well yeah icon been teasing coming out with sockets but is there any solid evidence they are yet? Because there are starting to be plenty of competition that is doing it. And yeah the gearwrench set the bits are just in little sleeves not that nice case but I do love the gearwrench set
Don't understand why more manufacturers aren't using the 1/4 in female on the bottom of the rachet handles of short rachets. Then you can attach the driver handle and extend the length of the rachet
Doesn't look awful but would rather metric for my needs. Some crossover sizes is cool but isn't always enough. Beefier ratchet looks great but can't fit in nearly as tight of space from the look of it. On sale for BF I might pick one up but the size of the box is a con in my book. More flexible is admittedly nice though. $23-28 for the Icon often on sale... adding a missing bit I needed and a 10mm socket (both of which fits in the case) is very hard to beat. Incredibly small form factor (a little bigger than a pack of cigs) with incredible reach/constraint options albeit a little more fragile (but well warrantied). I'll probably pick up the other and situationally the Craftsman might even have the edge but for my needs that's going to be the rarer circumstance. I'd give the victory to the Icon.
Lowes had the V series ratcheting wrenches on sale today for $30 (eight piece set). I bought them because they are made in Taiwan, not China. It has the lifetime warranty and there are lots of Lowes all around. This is prime consideration: Sometimes you will meet an idiot. I had a broken Craftsman 1/2 drive socket that I took with me to Lowes. The dumbass clerk wanted to argue with me, telling me that I needed a receipt and had to send the socket to the manufacturer. She was dumber than dog snot. After arguing, she got the manager involved that told her what the policy is... changed out then with NO problem. There are fewer Harbor Freight stores AND they have an inconsistent policy. I've never had a problem with HF, but I haven't had the one problem like a broken socket. The WRITTEN HF policy only covers the original purchaser and some people have been told that they have to take an entire set of tools back just to get the replacement tool you need. IF you run into that, you may want to get the manager's opinion (and that is all it will be since most don't read the policies). The written policy at HF also requires a receipt. Really? Their receipts fade out after a year.
My problem is never which one should I buy, it’s “I better get both just in case!” Lol to be fair to Craftsman you’re comparing an icon bit set to a full 1/4” drive socket set…
First off you need to post links for the products. 2nd I like the icon that have I have pushed hard since I've owned them I have added added set to my kit.
im lucky i still have most of my old craftsman tools made in the usa using usa steel. the new craftsman stuff is cheap and worthless to me . i went to husky tools and to me they are like the old craftsman tools they dont give and break like the last craftsman set i bought in 2018
You can not take off a half inch nut with the icon set. There are a lot more options with the craftsman, but in no way is the craftsman tool set worth one hundred dollars.
@jimprice8557 me neither! Own 3 sets of mini driver and have given another 3 sets as gifts. Great friggin tool set, harbor freight hit this one out of the park.
I love the Icon set, I don’t need sockets for it. If I want to use sockets I would use the full socket set. Also keep in mind the Icon set has been on sale for a low as $25

Haarbor Freight sockets and wrenches round off fasteners
Lowes had the V series ratcheting wrenches on sale today for $30 (eight piece set). I bought them because they are made in Taiwan, not China. It has the lifetime warranty and there are lots of Lowes all around. This is prime consideration:
Sometimes you will meet an idiot.
Yes get both
Can they handle brake clean?
Noisy makes a difference too cause point is the portability - likely sitting in the car and rattling all the time…
Not sure
Icon is coming out with a gen 2 with sockets could be a pontential upgrade but no idea if it's replacing the old bit set or not
I cannot wait until it comes out
I hope when the new Harbor Freight version comes out it is available in either SAE or metric.
That would be great
We agree!
Check out the Facom R1 pico
We need to
ICON all day long
Icon for the win
Impatiently waiting for the new extended kit. 😅
Me too
I know
Awesome video
Thanks
Craftsman kit is pretty premium looking but the icon is better. They're actually slightly different in terms of what they are all together.
Thanks
Icon is great
Great video
Thanks we appreciate it
First off you need to post links for the products.
2nd I like the icon that have I have pushed hard since I've owned them I have added added set to my kit.
That’s a good idea. I’ll need to try and remember that. Thanks for watching.
Look at the Fix It Sticks ratcheting T-Way wrench and do a cross over episode with your other channel.
We need too
im lucky i still have most of my old craftsman tools made in the usa using usa steel. the new craftsman stuff is cheap and worthless to me . i went to husky tools and to me they are like the old craftsman tools they dont give and break like the last craftsman set i bought in 2018
I heard that husky was good
You can not take off a half inch nut with the icon set. There are a lot more options with the craftsman, but in no way is the craftsman tool set worth one hundred dollars.
Thanks your right about that it’s not worth 100
Isn't Icon coming out with a whole new mini driver kit for 2025 with sockets ?
Can’t wait
@jimprice8557 me neither! Own 3 sets of mini driver and have given another 3 sets as gifts. Great friggin tool set, harbor freight hit this one out of the park.
Hope so
The closing clasp is metal.
If you carry that Craftsman set around all day you won't be sneaking up on anyone... lol. 🙂
Lol
I know it would be loud
Icon is nicebut that kobalt looks more enticing
Thanks for watching
We need to check it out
$100!!! He'll naw!!
Way too high
Yeah Craftsman doesn't actually make anything one of the companies that Stanley Black & Decker owns obviously makes Mac Tools
Thanks
The new icon won't have the flex head, and the box will be as big as the craftsman...Not going to be home run...
That ICON box latch is metal. Aluminum
Thanks
Great
I love the Icon set, I don’t need sockets for it. If I want to use sockets I would use the full socket set. Also keep in mind the Icon set has been on sale for a low as $25
That’s what I’m thinking about I need to get some more when they’re on sale
Icon set is great
I don't like the seal head on craftsman. Nonrebuilding the head of craftsman
We don’t like that either
The fact that the ratchet and screwdriver doesn’t lock in ruins the entire product. Craftsman 🥴
I know right
Icon all day long
Yes lol
Yes
Craftsman is junk, its just a 1/4 socket set with bits. It doesn’t do any of the cool things the icon set does
Icon is awesome
Craftsman does not make mac tools. Stanley black and decker owns them both.
Flooding the market with cheap overseas tools isn’t good in my opinion.
Great video
Thanks
Thanks
