Walking Dead zombies have superpowers too, they can turn invisible and soundless, appearing out of nowhere when there was nothing there before
all zombies have the power of plot, some zombies have the power of bad writing, few can achieve the legendary power of the walking dead, a literal zombie of a show

@@ogrejehosephatt37 I've felt that the whole zombie concept has been played out in movies and TV for years already. I think Shaun of the Dead should have killed that trope once and for all. I'm so over it. People like it because it's an excuse to slaughter hundreds of humans in nasty ways without having to feel guilty about wanting to slaughter hundreds of humans. I've started to refer to things like TWD and TKoU as "misery porn".
@@MrOtistetrax Oh, ha, I was talking specifically about how zombies can always step in just out of frame, regardless of how open an area is. It just makes zero sense how the people would be unaware of a shambling creature would get that close to them.
It stops being scary/exciting/interesting to me when the things the characters do don't really make a difference.

The scariest zombies are probably the ones in Return of the Living Dead. They literally can’t be killed, they are fully aware sentient and can speak, and even if you burn them their essence just resurrects others zombies
I fully agree. A zombie getting on the police radio to call for more backup, diabolical and terrifying. Though I always thought a wood chipper or industrial grinder would've done the trick for stopping them.
They're also existentially more terrifying than your average zombie, because they eat brains to dull the pain of dying/decay or something like that. Truly haunting shit.

Yeah, always found this type of zombie interesting for the reasons you mention, but also because they actually sorta make sense as a military weapon because they don't spread like a virus they're more like a chemical weapon you deploy over a specific area but it remains more or less local/regional.

surprised you didn't mention world war z style zombies, being able to climb literal sky scraper sized buildings through sheer mass of bodies is a terrifying concept and also super cool.
Train to Busan really took fast zombies and somehow made them much scarier.

I enjoyed Train, but I think I've seen too many zombie movies. A dozen times I said "glass breaks in wait for it, wait for it, okay now" or "add more zombies in three, two, one, now" or "train crash happens in such a way that a car full of zombies is suspended above them" and I was always exactly right. The curse of formula well followed is that it's very predictable. Again let me say I liked the movie. I would recommend. I just didn't think it was quite worthy of the zomgbestmovieever hype it got.

@@Maladjester I think Train to Busan is one of the best zombie movies out there because it was never about the zombies. A lot of zombie movies are just fun to watch, turn your brain off things to watch on screen, but Train to Busan is a commentary of how humanity deals with tragedy. It was incredibly emotional and poignant and I think you were watching it too much from the lens of a typical western horror zombie movie watcher.
During the Borg talk, I think Mason was thinking of Hive Mind when describing them. Tupperware is a acceptable tho.
An MLM with a hive mind twist would be a truly terrifying force to be reckoned with
I would love to see more stories using magic zombies. A zombie outbreak in the 1400s caused by some unknown evil would be a great setting for a story
Seeing how the Black Death killed a third of Europe, the Zombie Death would be the complete 100% I think.
I was serious contemplating the idea of it being magic zombies but once I thought "zombie rats", magic doesn't seem as interesting.
A horde of zombie rats.... The zombie rat that killed the cat that slogged the dog with shivery gnaws that engulfed the horse with nary a neigh that all feasted upon the house that Jack built.

This is a pretty good list , however, you guys missed a couple of variations that have always been pretty wicked: Dead Space Necromorphs and the Talking Head from Re-Animator.
Also from a book I read where all the animals became zombies too. That's just a whole other level of scary.
I loved Dead Space. Loved the idea of the necromorphs. If you're gonna animate the dead, why not go one step further and mold them like Play-Doh?

I think the COD games honestly give you a really good idea of how horrifying the zombie hordes can be. When you get deep into it, you can have the best gun in the game, and still be stressing over them.
adam driver's "zombies... GHOULS..." is the best line in that whole movie

I think you missed a rather unique zombie that I would classify as an "S" tier - the nearly indestructible zombies from Dan O'Bannon's 1985 classic zombie comedy "Return of the Living Dead." These were also partially intelligent and the first true fast moving zombies (they were actually undead), which makes them even more terrifying.(Side Note: Umberto Lenzi's Nightmare City had the first running "infected" zombies five years earlier in 1980).
The best zombies are ofc, the countless recycled jokes and comments found in these videos. They just keep coming back!

the "zombies" in 28 days later *do* need to breathe because they're not dead, which is why there's the debate about whether or not they qualify as zombies. the rage virus makes them unconcerned with everything except attacking and destroying uninfected people, and they're fast because the virus puts them in this supercharged adrenalin-infused state while they hunt. i personally just think of them as "infected", i mean a rabid dog isn't a zombie and the rage virus is pretty much rabies, albeit several orders of magnitude worse

Yeah I think zombies can be fast or slow, weak or super strong etc. but the one thing they absolutely should be to be called "zombie" is undead. The infected in 28 days later are just living humans with a rabies virus. You can kill them just like regular humans and they stay dead. And by the time the sequel starts (if you count the first scene as a flashback) they have all starved.
In fact, most of the infected in 28 Days Later were actually dying off from starvation towards the end of the movie.
Never thought I'd see a Mr Sunday and Mason tier list. This is goated with the sauce.

I agree with Maso on super zombies so much, the hunger for brains but still being intelligent should be initially after turning and then their brain just rots away. So they can still have the internal conflict aspect but then they’re just a fun super powered mindless enemy

I think what also makes The Last of Us infected worse than a normal zombie is that they don't rot.
If you stay away from a normal zombie alone for a few years, it'll rot away. if you leave an infected alone, it'll just turn into a bigger and scarier infected.
Fungus can die though.... It's already been shown in the TV show at least that they "dry out" and crumble.

@@xenoborg007 it does die and dry out, but I assume that’s only if it stays in one place and is deprived of food. They still go through metamorphosis which is scary by itself.
@@xenoborg007 depends, if it's out in the sun and dry it'd dry up but in a dank cellar it'll either spore or mutate into a nastier form, presumably if there's food about.

You missed at least four zombie types.
1/ The actual traditional Zombie - the Voodoo Zombie from Haitian folklore.
2/ Alien parasite Zombies (aka, Dead Space).
3/ Zombie animals.
4/ Patchwork zombies - aka, Frankenstein's Monster or the Abominations from Warcraft.
Can probably add armored zombies to the list. Basically lower-tech versions of cybernetic zombies, but keeping the same amount of difficulty to kill them due to metal or other hard materials protecting their vitals. An example is Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Parasite Zombies like in Resident Evil 4 or the flood from Halo are S tier. Idk what to consider the Dead Space Necromorphs.
That clip used for the slow zombies was effective, them eating that guy alive *slowly* made me wince in a way that the cracked-out fast zombies rarely do.
The "Original" zombie in Night of The Living Dead use tools. One zombie smashes a car window with a rock they also flinch before getting hit. CATEGORY A!
Technically they aren't zombies, Romero had never even heard of zombies when he made that film. He called them ghouls
The two kinds of zombies I actually like are the good ol' slow and shambling Romero ghouls and the OG voodoo zombies, running zombies and rage virus maniacs etc are just boring and stupid.
Techno-Zombies would've been S-tier for me, I love that

What are the Return of the Living Dead zombies classified as? Magic zombies maybe? It’s the kind of zombie where if you cut off an arm, then the arm will come after you
They come from science. 2-4-5 Trioxin causes the outbreak if I remember correctly.
The arm doesn't actually come after you, it just remains alive.

I think the scary thing about 'smart' zombies the way you describe them is if they keep going through the motions of their old life but there's no thought there, just a shadow of the life they used to live, things they kept doing day in and out like them wathinc tv but it's not on, or going to work and back

In the original Romero films, the dead were coming back to life. Period, end of pitch meeting.
No bites, no cuts, no scratches. You die... you're coming back. That's because the source was background radiation and whether if it was now to 20 years from now, all the dead come back as zombies. There's no surviving this, either you die and become a zombie or you die to a zombie.
Since that's too nihilistic, following zombie makers decided to give mankind an out by making zombieness a common quality rather than utter eventuality.

I personally feel a good example of intelligent zombies are the guys from PvZ. Not only is there leader a zombie capable of creating time portals, talking and creating loads of tech for the other zombies, but the other zombies themselves are intelligent enough to use them. I feel the best example of this stuff are the shooters, mainly gw2, and the comics.
Radiation Zombies like the Ghouls in Fallout which slowly lose their mind are really fascinating.
Like, imagine seeing yourself turn into a Zombie, and knowing that at any day soon you could finally lose what's left of your mind. It's some incredible and rarely touched storytelling.
Borg mention in the first few minutes makes me wish y’all covered more Star Trek shows. A Star Trek show series is my dream Caravan of Garbage
Two more zombos for you: 1) Curable Zombie, as in Warm Bodies and mini-series In the Flesh. Are they going to remain 'cured' or not? What if they run out of their supply of vitamins? 2) Vampire zombie, like The Strain or I Am Legend (book or film). They're vampires, but for all intensive purposes, they're really zombies.
If you like a superpowered zombie, read the Ex-Heroes series of books. Super enjoyable.

Hmmm, Revenant style zombies (sort of I guess). Those reanimated corpses with a specific target in mind. Unstoppable until the revenge is complete. Creepshow, with Leslie Neilsen succumbing to them and Peter Cushing rising to take someones heart in 'Tales from the Crypt' for example.

I liked the rage zombies in 28 days later but hate almost every other iteration of fast zombies. Props to the lads for putting the og zombies in their proper place.

The Borg get an appearance but not Cybermen, and then all tech zombies are lumped into C-tier. Rage inducing.

Also Super Poweful Zombie Abominations: like Nemesis, The Lickers, Lisa Trevor, Doctor What's His Face from Resident Evil 2.

Walking Skeloton Zombies (do those count?): from various media but Evil Dead comes to mind

Humanized Zombies: Warm bodies, My Boyfriend is Back, etc
Until The Last of Us my favorite were the wights from GOT, because most SciFi explanations for zombies don’t make sense. The human body would breakdown and decompose, so they wouldn’t last very long. Like in 28 Days Later the rabies comparison makes sense, but since the zombies aren’t drinking water and eating things the body actually needs, they would only last like a week before breaking down. I think zombies need limitations, where physical or magical, otherwise they’re not interesting. It’s interesting that y’all touched in fantasy zombies but didn’t mention the sights, but I guess they fall under the “man behind the curtain” being the more interesting component umbrella you mentioned.
