    Thanks for the transparency bro. I totally get the lesson about the missed screw. Super valuable takeaways here: how easy the light should separate (what you described as your experience in knowing that something was wrong) and how pliable the butyl stays after being left out of the oven. As I was watching it, I was wondering if you were under a time constraint to get the light separated because I wasn't sure if the butyl hardened again and it didn't seem to. Very valuable stuff, bro!
    One question though (you mentioned it at one point as a possible hindrance to prying the light apart) -- would it be a good idea to just completely remove any bulbs prior to sticking it in the oven?

    Well made video. This brings me back. I use to retrofit headlamps back in the early 2000's. I use to take junked up Audio/BMW/Mercedes, etc. headlamps and use the HID projectors to retrofit them into non HID projector vehicles.
    At 19:24, you are right about this. However, it depends the severity of the smudge and condition of lens. I used lint free alcohol camera wipes to clean the smudge, then left it alone. I rarely did this. Most of the time I used your advice and put the lens away and made sure nothing touched the inside.

      ZeZeppelin2017 the OG retro guys know what’s up. Such crazy hard work to pull off clean retros when you gotta chop up brackets and find a clean way to mount everything so it stays put after lots of road use.
      The game is different now, these kids are soft, lol. Everything is served up on a silver platter, and if I have anything to do with it, it’ll get EVEN EASIER! I don’t want others to have to live in the trenches for years just to pull off dope builds.
      What projectors were your fav back in the day?

      @@flyryde @FlyRyde My favorite, hmmmm. The ECE Valeo clear lens projector, because its light output, hyper extended right flare cutoff and blue/purple color on the edge of the beam pattern. On the other hand, that S2000 projectors super sharp DOT beam pattern was crazy good too, especially with the washer trick that made the cutoff look solid purple. Wish you the best!

      Preston Weiters Jr. 3 years ago i opened up a set of leaking headlights that would have cost me $700 to replace. i blacked them out and installed a set of LEDs down the corner markers.. i opened them using a heat gun and did a really good job, but after seeing how easy they separate out of the oven with the 2x4 tip, i want to do it again to another set because it’s going to be so much easier 💯. it’s definitely cheaper to take broken parts and fix them

    noticed none of the comment indicate a trick that someone else discovered and shared on youtube...
    use those junk credit cards (the kind you get in the junk mail). stick the junk cards between the tab and latch. if it need to stay (not fall out), use tape on the junk card and the body. Voila you got a means to prevent tab to re-latch while you make effort to separate two plastics. :)
    there is also another comment suggesting plastic playing card. I haven't tried playing card and suspect might have to deal with thin-plastic.

    Having done my 17 year old headlights (DRLs, clear corners and xenon mirrors recoated and reinstalled) here's some tips I messed up and no one will tell you.
    1) Individual lights inside (main, high and fogs) are set in a reference to each other. Make sure you install them correctly if you remove them (take reference measurements). In mine main and fogs can be adjusted with screws as usual but not high beams. I now have high beams that point too low.
    2) Check everything works before you put back the lenses, adjust your lights and check them again. Then check again. One of the electric adjustment motors inside one headlight was dead or disconnected and I discovered it too late (to remove my headlights is a bumper out job).
    3) Don't touch any of the mirror surfaces. DONT TOUCH IT.
    4) Remove old butyl with screwdriver and hairdryer and always use new butyl. Its cheap.

    I'm getting condensation inside the housing lens after resealing with the retro-rubber. Has never been wet either. Just moisture from the air. The warmth of the HID bulbs in contrast to the cold November temps outside the housing is causing the lens to fog. I did use a microfiber towel and window cleaner to remove accidental fingerprints from the inside of the lens. No scratches but I think that may have removed some factory anti-fog treatment that may have existed inside the lens. What anti-fog solution would you guys recommend for retreating the lenses? Thanks

      Lauri Jokinen why would you convert them from LHD to RHD? There is a reason they are LHD, it’s so you don’t blind other drivers when driving on the right side of the road. Please don’t swap the projectors for RHD projectors when your country is LHD cars.

    Hello I really admire your ability to do this. I have a couple questions . I own 2014 Mustang and the factory LED running lights how long will they last ? and I know they are not bright like the newer cars I wish they had made them easy to service . Another Question I own a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire and the lens are cloudy and there are no aftermarket replacements Im afraid to open them because I am afraid they may crack since they are old . What do you think about the Crossfire ? wish they would make replacement lens for all Headlights perhaps someone should do this for tail lights and headlights. Nowadays to replacement Tail and headlights can cost no less than $1000. where say a lens could save tons of money . Do you have any ideas for lens replacements say if they get cracked and you cannot buy say on the Crossfire and you have to junk the car because there are no replacements. Thanks for any help on this

    Most headlights now have sub harnesses that run allover the back side of the light plus plastic clips or small brackets, bunch of random things basically. To make sure you put it all back together properly, before you remove anything bust out your phone and take some pictures of it so you have a reference just in case you forget or for whatever. Quick and easy insurance to not mess up something!

      Very few EU lights, BMW or otherwise are sealed with rubber butyl. It’s kind of a craps shoot to find out which ones. Best thing to find out is research like crazy and find someone with modified lights of the same make, model, AND year, so verify. Kinda not a dope answer, but it’s the best I can do 😅

    Im tempted to try this, i bought some headlights for my tundra that have what initially looks like day time running lights. but they are so dime in daylight you can't tell at all that there are lights there.
    At night they look great. but the whole point of having day time running lights is so they can be seen during the day. so i want to try and replace the ones on it with something that are brighter. But also the company obviously has their policy where if you separate the lenses or take them apart in any way warranty is void. so theres a chance of ruining the head lights i just bought.

    I was given a tour of a North American Lighting plant as part of a job interview and the guy showing me around said they're trying to move away from the permanent adhesive and instead using something that is injected and sets up like a gasket. This way they are able to do rework just by removing the screws and pulling the lens apart. The gasket pulls out easily without mess and the parts can be sent back through the process for a new gasket application.

    Great videos, quick question, is it safe to keep the bulbs and ballasts on the headlight when baking?

    • @flyryde
      @flyryde  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bulbs yes, ballasts I remove unless they’re crazy hard to remove, like on a 06-10 Lexus IS250 you gotta do way too much to remove the ballast, so I leave it. It’s not much different than their normal environment as far as heat goes, but if it’s just a few screws and a plug, pull em. Bulbs get hotter than hell when on anyway. Kinda like worrying about a fish getting too wet 😉

    • @tonystarkkk2
      @tonystarkkk2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FlyRyde yeah makes sense I started doing slight headlight mods like taking the amber out and black housing and demon eyes. I always took out bulbs and ballasts just to be safe but I was curious so I wanted an expert opinion. Thanks for the response

  • @Kini_the_Fox
    @Kini_the_Fox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I cannot suggest enough that you DO NOT use a kitchen oven to heat up your lights! Many headlights these days have electrical components built onto them that cannot be removed, wether it’s a full-blown HID or LED driver, or something as simple as a 12v or GND rail. These components aren’t the problem, the solder that holds them together is. 99% of solder used in automotive manufacturing contains lead. When heated, leftover flux in the solder escapes, carrying poisonous lead with it, which can be re-deposited on the internal surfaces of the oven, and subsequently, the food you eat, subjecting you to lead poisoning. This is something that’s more commonly considered by electrical engineers and PCB repair people, but also applies to not all, but many of these lights being made today. If you absolutely have to use a kitchen oven, make sure there are no drivers, and make sure all wires and rails have NO solder on them

    So after you set the retro glue onto the headlight do you put it back in the oven to heat the glue up so you can easily put the lense back on?

    Do you need to heat the housing back up to seal it together with the butyl? Since it gets sticky when hot?

    Have you ever replaced the projector lens on a 2018 Impala and put in HID bulbs, is there much to doing this upgrade?

    Quick question, once you are in the process of resealing the headlight and you have put in the new sealant, do you need to bake it in the oven again so that the sealant can bond with the headlight?

    I got one question only. I want to do a motorcycle headlight but it has wires, a CAN-Bus plug in between the casing and 2 plastic screws in order to regulate the height of each beam. Is there a chance that the over might damage the things mentioned? I know the temp isn't high enough, but a wire is always a wire and I wouldn't want it to melt, the CAN-Bus is a plug and the regulating plastic screws are a bit fragile from what i can tell.

    Not having much luck getting the tail light lens assembly for my 2012 Santa Fe apart. Both left and right assemblies filled up with water and the light bulbs inside literally exploded. This is an oem part that is sealed with a black, not very flexible sealant. I tried baking them in the oven for 8 mins at 225 degrees. Then I tried pulling them apart and then tried to dig the sealant out with a knife. I put the unit back in the oven for ten minutes at 250 degrees. I tried to pull the assembly apart again, but it wouldn't budge. That's when I tried prying it apart with a putty knife and cracked the lens in two places. I was careful and tried to take my time, but the thing is no looser than when I started. Is it the sealant that was used or am I missing something?

    1/6/19, That's an awful lot of trouble for some DRLs. It would be much easier to mount some auxiliary lamps & wire them up. Your right about opening up those fixtures; once you do that they'll never be quite the same.

    I may try this. Too cheap to buy custom lights premade and frankly don’t care for most of them but I could mess up and do this twice and cost less than a set of custom lamps. Are there projector beams that can be installed? I have lamps that look like projector lights could fit well. I may seal mine with panel adhesive since I don’t plan to ever go back into them.

    Terrific video, thank you very much. My 97 ETC headlights are getting moisture in them, so I will be able to seal them good now. You mention DK Molds, I googled them and found a company in China, is that them? Also, while I like the sequential leds, is there a possibility of modding with the "audi" plasma type of sequential light? Thanks

    What's the proper procedure to use the rubber butyl to reseal? Do you screw it all back together and heat in oven again??
