We lived in San Francisco when our kids were babies and we were not comfortable with the idea of a trailer among City traffic, so we carried our kids (starting at 9mos old) on the back of our bikes. We loved the Blackburn Limo child seat, because it reclines! The kids ALWAYS fell asleep, and we tried the Yepp, but their heads would flop forward and bounce around.
We used a trailer in the ‘burbs. It felt safe riding around neighborhoods or on multi-use trails away from traffic. Our youngest loved it, because she could draw and bring toys with her.
Now they’re in early elementary school (at two different schools and often at different activities at the same time, so we have to divide and conquer), so we decided to get an ebike instead of buying a second vehicle. We use our ebike more than our old minivan! We ride them to and from school on a Tern GSD. We have a giant hill between us and school so having a motor is necessary. LOVE it. Kids love it. It feels solid and safe. I’ll be sad the day they outgrow it (to ride together).

Wow, what a great video. I never thought about how complex the ebike world meanwhile is is and how many opportunities exist.
The way you illustrated the different use cases and bike options via short video clips was outstanding.
As a grandfather and for the time being I’m OK with the rack mounted seat. However my kids will have to deal with this urban transportation system soon and therefore I downloaded your video for them.
For me personal I start considering the x-over or medium tale bikes. They seem to make perfekt sense for when the grandchilds are a taler. Different to a front loader I could put those bikes onto the car rack I guess.
Finally, different to the dealers I know in my country, Germany, you repeatedly look at bikes as a transportation-system, that ranges from bike technology, relevant bike parameters, use cases to bike storage at home and ergonomics. That helps a lot to better understand the new opportunities that come with e-mobility in urban areas. I‘m saying that as an Engineering Manager who works in the automotive industrie.
Well done Chris. I’m sorry your shops are not in reach for me.

We bought a Yepp maxi seat, heavy duty racks, and easyfit adapters when our now 6 year old turned one. We loved it until she got too heavy to get up our East Tennessee hills. It took a little while for the GSD to come to market, but once we got our GSD, we have been able to get kiddo back as a passenger. It's been wonderful.
Anyway, I'm happy to answer questions from the perspective of a parent.

Great overview! We went with a Thule trailer for the kids for safety reasons (no chance of falling from a height). However you transport your kids, I cannot recommend a strong motor enough. We have the Bosch CX and are grateful for the 85 Nm whenever we climb a hill.

Another great video. The more I watch the better understanding I have for wealth of options available.
I like the idea of towing small bike to a safer place where it can cycle on it's own.
3 wheeled cargo bikes are also good option for those who struggle with balancing.

What a coincidence, you having a vlog where you show Cargo bikes in The Netherlands. This week I was relaxing a bit on a bench near a deer park close to my house. A woman arrived with a Urban Arrow, a Cargo e-bike from my country. Very nice bike to see, she had 3 children in the front and a very small kid in a bike seat on the back. I said to her, what a nice bike! They gave the deers some food and the kids get back on board. The little girl on the high seat on the backrack. Then suddenly, I suppose the woman got the bike from the bicycle stand and the whole bike fell over. I was really shocked and ran over. A other guy did the same and we lifted the bike up to upright position. I said, I was really shocked and so did the woman. But the children where laughing and nothing had happen to them. That sure was a good thing! You see a lot of cargo bikes nowadays, not only with children but also companies using these bikes. Thanks for nice vlog Chris.

    Chris, am I first⁉️⁉️🤣🤣🤣
Anyway, that's enough self-aggrandising, as there's little point in painting the lily‼️🙄🙄🙄
This is the best video you've done, and a very necessary one if it gets people out of their humongous SUVs. You're showing people they can successfully transport their offspring, plus goods and chattels, in a cheaper, healthier and environmentally friendly fashion, and without recourse to a planet destroying juggernaut. Admittedly, the USA transport model is designed purely for the automobile, and, as such, cycling as transportation is not as easy as in other, more bike friendly, countries. However, as the US road system is in a state of near total collapse, this shortcoming could be remedied if the road are ever repaired.
In the interim, Chris, you are providing much needed information and reassurance regarding the validity of bikes as a mode of transport.

@@Propelbikes Anybody who quotes Tupac Shakur is O.K. by me. In fact, I'm rather envious of your modernity. Being English, I tend to rely on Shakespeare, and his contemporaries, rather than living in the present. You, on the other hand, are striving to make for a better future, and doing a great job of doing so. Keep on rolling, and enjoy NYC.

Very good video as usual. I hope you can make a video providing some explanation of weight limits on cargo bikes. Since there are quite a lot of confusions about total permissable weight and load that a bike can carry. Some dealers put the total counting with the weight of the bike like Urban Arrow and others just the weight on the cargo box and rack. Some brands make it quite confusing.

You could call it an "infant carrier". I think that's the technical name. I definitely get the frustration with cargo bikes not being as available in North America. I'm in Nanaimo, BC and have to travel to another city (BTW I don't have a car and have two ADHD/ASD kids under 6 so not an easy feat 🙃) in order to even try a front load carrier ebike or even a long-tail and the front load carriers are on avg $10k 😫. I would be willing to pay it because it's still cheaper than a car (especially since I don't have my license) and would be a good investment but I'm a low income single mom and probably won't qualify for any loans 🥲. I think I'll have to start with an xtracycle swoop and upgrade down the line. Maybe they'll be cheaper in a couple years

Ok my 2 cents on the trailer option: that might not be the most ideal version if you live in a busy city. I knew someone with that thing. In my country (the Netherlands) they have little waiting islands in the middle of the road to cross it more safely. I saw a mommy with trailer stop on the island but cause the trailer is behind her she didn't realise that...yes mommy was safe on the island...baby on the other hand was sticking out and in the middle of the road. Luckily it turned out ok. But if I ever have a kid I won't use that one cause I would want to see my kid or know its behind me...safe. I'd either do what my parents did...little seat on the bike. Or the cargo bike. That way you can also use it to transport other stuff.

As a Dutch person I have never seen the bike with seats for bigger kids/adults before. Yeah thats not a bike for the Dutch market cause if the kid is that age he/she will have its own bike cause they need to develop skills and not be so lazy expecting mommy to ride him/her places. And grownups just jump on the back of the bike sidesadle style...no need for the extra seat.

What about coming up with a trailer that will carry special needs or disabled adults

    • @Snowshowslow
      @Snowshowslow 2 ปีที่แล้ว

There are side-by-side bikes that can function for that purpose, depending on the disability or need in question. The Fun2go Duofiets, for example. Those are used extensively in the Netherlands for volunteers taking elderly and disabled people on bike rides, as it's not necessary for both people to be paddling (or able to see the road, blind passengers are also quite common). However, these only work for people who can stay seated on such a seat. Bikeability has some different models as well, including wheelchairlike bikes. So I think quite a lot already exists, it might just be a matter of importing it.
