    Lego's AR themes seem so desperate to not get left behind by technology, but they fail to realize that being a physical product is what sets them apart from technology. You don't see Brio making AR trains (maybe you do idk; haven't touched Brio in decades, lol). Still just bummed that Hidden Side failed, assumedly to their bad AR integration and poor box design.

    • @miklogron6883
      @miklogron6883 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The box design was the best part of Hidden Side.

    • @StonewallBricks
      @StonewallBricks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@miklogron6883 I mean it looked cool but I didn't like that you couldn't even tell what the set looked like from the box. I'd guess that a decent amount of people didn't even realize it was Lego.

      FYI Brio does make AR trains

    • @kentslocum
      @kentslocum ปีที่แล้ว

      Brio has a "Smart Train" system, which is miles better because it does not require a smartphone or additional technology--just the Smart Train and some track pieces that trigger sounds and actions from the train.

    • @penfold7800
      @penfold7800 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brio do make an app controlled train with sounds, but the train also has buttons on it so you can still get the full experience without the app.

    100% agree with your remarks. Technic should be including informative and cool AR see through functions like the trial truck has. Imagine the BMW racing bike, the Airbus helicopter or even the Osprey with this function and it becomes clear how amazing it could be.

    I agree, the AR app's don't work for or for my kids and my phones are never compatible... It was best for LEGO (and for us) if they invest all Tha money in B and C models, because I'm not a master builder and I would love to be capable of build more with my sets. Enough of AR app's, please!

  • @Joramee
    @Joramee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I like your ideas for the technic AR, Lego could use it as a learning tool to explain how the mechanisms work, and yes also to show you how it's supposed to work at different stages of the build.

    8:21 no joke, when I finished building the zetros it didn't drive forwards. So I used the app to see how it's supposed to work and where are the pieces, that way I managed to get it working

    You are right RacingBrick that lego should focus on what it has done in its 90 years of history, that is to make children have fun building and rebuilding while we adults to make us relive the most beautiful memories of our childhood with 10497
    A little tip for lego: it should make an app for supercars in 1: 8 scale that at least shows how the gearbox and engine works given the price to pay

    The Hidden side theme was actually really cool-giving you normal set to build, which had nice Halloween, spooky vibe, as well as hidden features-turning into monsers. The app was just a nice addition

    This is why I refuse to buy any of the Technic sets that use the Powered Up system. I refuse to spend all that money on something that may not work in 5 years rime because LEGO can't be bothered supporting the app. They should have just developed the Power Functions system, it was far better having a physical controller.
    For me LEGO was always a creative hands on toy, and i believe it should be taking us away from our phones and technology. Great vid!

  • @PhoenixClank

    I think what would be cool, is a next step of evolution for building instructions. The current state of the art is 3D rotatable versions of the pictures you see in the instruction booklets. With AR you could show an outline of the pieces to be added right on the model you're building!
    But I guess this is really impractical if you need to hold the phone up, so it would only work with AR glasses.

  • @Matej1473
    @Matej1473 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like Building Instructions app, save papers(trees) on paper manuals in boxes(in future). Hidden Side was good idea, AR app with mini games, play games on smartphone with your Lego set. VIDIYO is interesting idea with music video maker app. Not best, but Lego had good idea, how play with your minifigs and special tiles or good way, how make more money from blind boxes.
    I don't like only their BT controls apps, because I will want one universal app, like their 5 apps for different theme sets.
    Example Powered Up and Control+ will have one app, Lego robots same, only select your theme and set.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with universal apps would be the size, the Control+ and Powered Up apps are already huge on their own.

    I think the main issue here is that people think these AR stuff costs a lot to develop, eating away at the set budget. The reason were getting them is because they probably cost significantly less to develop than whatever parts gimmick these sets could have, having these tacked in the box just adds so much value to the product relative to the internal cost. They look like afterthoughts because they are, but still gives lego an excuse to add a couple of bucks to the srp.

    Quality software is very expensive. And when Lego is coming to software company and asks to develop a product be sure that price jumps over the roof) So i think they are trying to find something cheaper and we see this result. If you think that such a large company as Lego wouldn't go cheap on the software, you are wrong, Boeing is massive, but they wanted to save on software, and they did save, but result was very very bad, plane crashed and people died.

    tbh, the only kind-of-good-working-AR-apps, that I know of and that track objects, not the movement of the phone, are the apps that detect faces, everything else highly depends on the content, area, hardware... Since the C+ App for the Zetros works fine I would summerize:
    Do those AR apps work well in general? No.
    Are they state of the art? I'm afraid they are.
    They don't develop the technology themself anyway, they use the available libs like everyone else. And from a technology-standpoint, it will get better faster now, since specialized hardware is more common available.
    The content on the other hand... are there any good working AR-games? If there are, I would like to try one for comparision....
    The C+ profile for the Zetros is realy nice and more profiles just for this showcase would be great, even for models without C+ hardware.
    As a summery for the content:
    Are there great possibilities to combine Lego with smartdevices? Yes.
    Are AR-games one of them? I guess not.

    I understand the idea and desire to use AR, but it frustrates me as a Lego builder as such tech is easily outdated by newer versions, phones, and apps within 1-2 years. It is a huge reason I dislike a lot of the powered up motors. I miss the good 'ol RC days of Lego. Some of my old motors still work today, but I have a few sets from the early 2000s and 2010s that used software to function and are now "bricked" and useless (like the Spybotics 3806: Gigamesh G60 from 2002 and some of the old Mindstorms sets)

      That's the thing I don't get about Hidden Side. Most people and reviews say that the sets were great (so were the bigger vidiyo sets), but the App was not fun. So... people didn't buy the sets because the app exists instead of just not using it? As far as I can see, the sets work very good on their own... as I said: I don't get it.

      @@McKrushi Def one of the things that bewildered me about the theme; I have heard many reasons ranging from lack of marketing to the slight upcharge pricing for its sets due to the app feature…I just don’t get why either for such refreshing designs…tbh I’m just tired of the lack of originality from the constant SW and HP sets (no hates, love them but overdone)

Most aplications with touchscreens are not user friendly at all. Even the Windows enviromnent can become quite difficult for most of the people.

    Yes and also LEGO invest a little more in the crappy box quality and print and don't give us some environmental excuse your products are made from plastic anyway. Collectors like us want to see boxes of a slightly higher quality and better quality ink so our investments are a little more protected. You already took away the nice plastic trays from the old days so don't be so cheap and improve box quality. C'mon LEGO!!!

    I have that Space ship themed set you have on the table there. However, the set didnt have any instructions and the App refused to scan the QR code in the set, so it remains just a bag of bits ...except for the 3 minifigs which I could build from the pictures on the box. So, a truelly appalling play experience.

    yeah, not buying ANY Lego AR sets ever again, been there like 3 times and burnt every time, so long Lego AR, TLG has to be realistic and be aware that 90% of Lego buyers will not use, be interested in, or care about AR.. about 1/3 of Lego sets sold will probably never be built one time, cause the person who bought the set as a gift, has no buy-in to the Lego world, its just a easily available "nice gift", and the person receiving (mostly children) do not have the attention span to use an AR app. Hidden side, for its fans, was great, but its fans are a small segment of Lego customers, so they should have just made the sets online only, and realize the sales would not be like those of a star-wars battle pack

    The positive about Hidden Side is that the models themselves are great without the app. VIDIYO lacked that big time.
    My daughter (6) built one of the CITY Missions yesterday and loved it. The app (LEGO Instructions) is pretty light and works on a budget tablet and is easy to understand. My only concern is what happens when the app is no longer updated, like we've seen with Nexo Knights and Boost Droid Commander (and soon VIDIYO). Then all there is left of the CITY Missions is a pile of parts.

    I own several Control+ sets and don't even use the Lego app. For me even the act of controlling sets (and MOCs) are only truly enjoyable with a physical controller. And since Lego doesn't provide any I have switched to 3rd party solutions (BrickController2 app + Xbox controller).
    Lego should just focus on physical playability and only use smartphones to add something optional, not rely on them in a 'this only works half of the time on half of the devices' way.

  • @natbarmore
    @natbarmore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I pretty much agree.
    I bought several Hidden Side and almost all the Vidyo sets, because they were cool builds, had new/rare/unique pieces, or both. Obviously I’m not the target market (I’m more than a bit over 6-12 years old), but I was still surprised at how little connection there was between the sets and the apps, and how little there was to actually _do_ in the apps.
    I was expecting Vidyo to let you at least mix and match songs or bits of songs. But really all you can do is play a recording and layer a couple sound effects on top of it. And all the Beat Bits do is unlock those sound effects. The stages could slightly transform in AR, but it didn’t, frex, change the sound of the music when the speakers changed. I was hoping for at least an EQ or other effect (like reverb). Ideally, they would’ve gotten the licensed songs as separate tracks and you’d be able to turn the bass or the drums or the backup singers on/off or change their levels. Or, pitch-shift and tempo-shift the songs so that kids could layer bits from different songs and they’d sound ok, or maybe bad, but not horrible. (They could’ve done that ahead of time, so that certain groups of songs work together, rather than needing the app/device to do it on the fly with arbitrary combinations.)
    And the Vidyo characters promised these delightful genre mashups that the actual music in the app didn’t really deliver on. Where’s my Country-disco music?
    Hidden Side was slightly better. The ghost-zapping game is actually interactive, if pretty simplistic, and not limited by what sets you can afford to buy. And the AR component doesn’t just _recognize_ your set, but actually reacts to it-but only in very rudimentary ways.
    If Lego is going to bring AR to their sets, they should do it in ways that interact with the sets-that do things you _can’t_ do with a non-Lego AR game. Interact with the building, like the Missions sets. Show us the insides, like the Zatros. Let us build things virtually. Have the game change completely if you rebuild your physical Lego creation.

Vidiyo was discontinued, it should never have started but is still available on sale for us suckers on shop from home, that says a lot about LeGo right there! Do you really feel like a VIP or a mark in the lEgO con game.

    if its any reassurance, most AR apps are janky and often feel like solutions looking for problems. AR on a phone is just one step removed from doing it properly - which needs glasses IMO and potentially several years from being anywhere near mainstream. So if you see it as more like a novelty your expectations can be suitably low

    I just recently got the Mustang - worst Technic set I own. It was flimsy and felt like it was incapable of even moderate use. The AR app is a waste of time. Incidentally, I went onto Rebrickable and found a really awesome MOC and turned the Mustang into a racing truck. It's a way more interesting build, solid as a rock, and I don't think I'll ever rebuild it as a Mustang again. Not a big fan of the pullback things either - they do lock up a lot and running my builds in a straight line across the floor obviously has limited play value.

    I don't understand the need for the technic cars app to make the track turn, the car still goes straight anyways. It just adds extra complexity. If you're gonna make a drag racer, or at least a car that can't turn, stick to drag racing tracks.
