    Oddly enough, Chief is my favorite character in this movie, because I find him to be the most interesting. He's not chasing Todd simply because he's evil; he's only doing what he's been raised to do. And, while he does act as a surrogate father figure for Copper, his enormous ego does get in the way.

      I enjoyed Chief more than I remembered. Seeing the old hand in a story about the young kids was entertaining

    I love The Fox and the Hound!
    It's my favorite Disney movie that I can relate to
    I love that it's a coming of age story and it was not afraid to be a very serious Disney film
    I love the characters of Tod and Copper and the friendship between the two of them is so beautiful and it was also sad that we knew that their friends wasn't gonna last
    It's so sad that it's under appreciated by the Disney studio while it was a slight success back in 1981 but keep in mind that it felt like both The Fox and the Hound and The Great Mouse Detective are the reasons we got the Disney Renaissance
    It's my childhood and it has a special place in my heart

    Sorry to say, but with this film being sad enough with Tod’s mom dying in the beginning, as well as some other sad scenes, I’m actually glad that Chief didn’t get killed off. I honestly don’t think people would have liked this film as much if that have been the case. Still, feel free to say otherwise! Great review, and glad to have you back again!

    • @4ndro
      @4ndro ปีที่แล้ว

      Chief not dying is the reason why this movie doesn't work for me. Copper looks like a prick because he's all bent on revenge while there's not much to avenge. He doesn't even care about Chief's wellbeing, as shown in the scene when he gets home with the hunter and they ignore Chief.

    Does anybody else think that The Fox and the Hound and Bambi are set in the same universe? Also, before I got seriously interested in animation history, I thought this movie was from the 1940s-50s, largely because of it's resemblance to Bambi and Old Yeller, coupled with the fact that it didn't have the scratchy 'Xerox' look of the 70s movies.

      Recobbled Cobbler understandable. This was Disney's best looking animation and character designs since the 1950s.

    I remember last Monday where my English professor was saying that all Disney movies ends with a happy ending, and I debunk her using this movie as an example. Watching this video made me realize how much she underestimates The Fox and the Hound, and possibly Disney movies in general.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While there's certainly a disproportionate amount of Disney movies that end with a happy ending, there's definitely a few out there with bittersweet tones such as this

      6t76t Yep. This ending is soooo depressing.
      I love it.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fatuusdottore why? I'm not saying it's bad, but the story is about a childhood friendship and an adult fall out, and their relationship didn't seem to develop organically, not to mention chief's dead would have served as a logical inciting incident for their fallout. For all the fault the sequel has it showed them being friends!(also don't worry the child actors are pretty well casted.) also i don't remember exactly where i heard it but in the book Chief is the youngster and Cooper is the veteran hunting dog, is it true?

    I swear this is one of the only times you can say, "Don Bluth, Tim Burton and Brad Bird walk into a studio..." and have it be accurate. (Since I don't think the latter two worked on the other Disney films before then)

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Might be the only time actually, seeing as Bluth left after this production, Bird soon afterwards and neither him nor Burton even got there until after the had graduated from Cal Arts

    Sorry for the rapid comments, but at 15:51, i just want to correct you on something. (I know some people don't do this, but still, it's rather common)
    When a dog is a puppy, it's generally customary to NOT leave them on a leash, because when they're really young, they need to be taught to stay on the property of their own accord. Because if you keep them leashed up forever, they'll grow resentful and try to run away. (Speaking from experience)

    I would love it if Disney would ever consider making a live action remake of this 1981 Disney classic with CGI animation like they did with the live action remakes of the Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, and Pete's Dragon, and what they are going to do with the live action remakes of the Lion King and Dumbo with new original songs, new original characters, and more story, and how the story should be handled this time around And I also would like it if Tim Burton like return to work on this like he did with the original, and would be dedicated to the memory of Mickey Rooney who voiced adult Tod, Pearl Bailey who voiced Big Mama, Jeanette Nolan who voiced the kindly Widow Tweet, Jack Albertson who voiced Amos Slade, Pat Buttram who voiced Chief, John Fiedler who voiced the Porcupine, John McIntire who voiced the Badger, Richard Bakalyan who voiced Dinky, and last but not least Paul Winchell who voiced Boomer Bless their souls and may they rest in peace.

    Let me tell you now there were multiple parts of the Fox and the Hound that I enjoyed, most of which come from the beginning when Todd and Copper were still children. Both Todd and Copper were perfectly cute acting like animals, it reminded me of my pet Faro when he was a puppy. And I loved the compassion Widow Tweed showed to Todd while he was a pup. I will have to say though, that this decreased my care for Amos Slade and Chief. While Widow Tweed treated Todd with plenty of compassion, Copper looked less like a family member and more like a slave to Amos Slade, and that was just...….PAINful. Things did not get much better when the child animals became adults; Todd and Copper had to break up, Widow Tweed had to leave Todd and the violence, although not enough to scare children, got very crazy. I suppose the ending made me feel somewhat better, but not as god as I felt at the movie's beginning. So to make a long story short, I like the first half of this movie, but I am conflicted about the second half. So I suppose I have mixed feelings about the Fox and the Hound.

    Someone brought up that Fox and The Hound has a racial allegory. While I dunno about allegory, I can easily see a more harsher view of Copper/Todd’s friendship. They are people torn apart by society and the roles put upon them.
    Which is much worse than just friends drifting apart. It’s friends who are forced apart and possibly kill each other as adults.

    12:47 - No real villians? I guess the giant, psychopathic bear doesn't count?
    12:52 - Also, i disagree, his anger at the beginning is not exactly unreasonable. Amos is also a farmer, not just a hunter, and as someone who personally grew up in the country, with a family of farmers and hunters, i know something. Foxes are very predatory animals, especially for farmers, who's entire livelihood is their livestock. We had a problem with foxes constantly coming into our family and eating our chickens and things, it's pretty much customary to shoot and kill foxes on sight.

    I LOVE The Fox and the Hound! It is my fourteenth favorite Disney animated film of all time! I just ABSOLUTELY LOVE Todd and Copper's friendship! I always wanted them together in the end though yet I also love the fact that Disney made it a whole lot different compared to other Disney films. Though, I always hoped for a sequel where Todd and Copper can reunite and Todd has kids with Vixie and Copper finds himself a girlfriend and gets puppies ever since I was a little kid. I STILL WANT THAT! Lol

  • @disneydork57
    @disneydork57 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My feelings towards this film has always been lukewarm at best. But it's hard to explain why as there's nothing majorly wrong or objectionable about the film. It does what it sets out to do competently, has the emotional heart needed for all Disney films, and even stars one of my favorite actors, Mickey Rooney. I guess it's just the more realistic somber atmosphere bores me. I grew up in the backwoods, so films set there always feel a bit dull. There's no magic to be had at home. And it's not just this movie either, I can name numerous acclaimed live action films that give me the same feeling of apathy due to it's location; Where the Red Fern Grows, Bridge to Terabithia (1985), ect.

    Perhaps a middle ground for the Chief issue could have him permanently disfigured (ie lose a limb) which means he cannot hunt anymore, which would also imply he would be put down by Slade out of necessity. Just a thought.

    Do you think Walt Disney would be proud of what his company and Disneyland have become today, and what do you think he'll think of other films like the Disney Renaissance films? And even other tv shows like The Simpsons.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think he would, and I think he would be very impressed by the Renaissance strictly from a technological standpoint. Walt loved new animation technologies, so they would probably be right up his alley, and a lot of those movies were ideas he had originally for films.
      As for animated TV shows, I don't think he would find them too shocking. He started moving more and more into the direction of the television media before his death, so it wouldn't shock me if he had already thought that animated TV shows would eventually happen

    You have done an excellent job here. I first saw “The Fox and the Hound” when I was 11 years old, back in 1981. It was showing at a drive-in theater in Connecticut, and I went with a bunch of other kids from the neighborhood in a station wagon to go see it. I say I “saw” the movie loosely, because I had a puppy love grade school crush on a girl who was my age who was in my group as well. We spent most of the movie playing on the seesaw and swings rather than actually watching. But I digress.
    I later saw the film for real in 1994 in a college film study class, where we discussed it and picked it apart in depth. I was so impressed with the movie that I went out and bought a just released VHS copy from the Disney store immediately afterwards. It has since become one of my favorite Disney animated features.
    Discord and conflict that took place during production, in my opinion turned out to be a positive thing for Disney movies and other productions in general. Had everybody been happy and content and followed the original ideas, would the film have turned out as good as what was released? You were correct it would’ve been a good movie but not a great movie. Killing Chief could have been excepted, but it was not necessary. Copper could’ve been motivated to be angry just due to the accident happening. And the ridiculous Charro song would’ve been so badly out of place people would’ve been scratching their heads, confused over weather or not the film was supposed to be a drama or a kid movie. I’m guessing the film would not have been nearly as financially successful, a “Black Cauldron” one film sooner… which would’ve had a negative affect on the future films. Had the production team stayed together, what would the later projects have looked like? The old saying goes, conflict spurs on creativity. Not to mention had the team not split up, you would’ve not ended up with excellent films from other studios where the exiled or defecting animators ended up at. Films such as “Secret of Nihm”, “American Tail” “Scruffy”, “Ferngully” and quite a few others would not have come to fruition.
    As for your observation of the picture….you nailed it. In a sea of fairy tales and princesses, “The Fox and the Hound” is more relatable to the average person. It’s a story not just about roles society forces us to take,but also misunderstanding, miscommunication, controlling anger, understanding things can change and accepting those changes, coming to terms with loss, and most important, doing what is morally correct and forgiveness. There are no villians in this story, however, the main characters each have flaws which they overcome in their own ways:
    Tod…afraid of change/ego
    Copper…a follower not a leader/ego/immaturity
    Chief…Lazy/impulsive/wreckless/Jealous
    Amos…Temper/Impulsive/Fails to see the big picture
    Widow Tweed…Temper/does not listen to the other side of the story/assumptive
    Dinky/Boomer/Big Mama/Vixey…resigned to following what society dictates.
    All of these flaws manifest into a situation that goes out of control…this is what the bear represents.
    To break that cycle, all it took was one character to overcome and conquer his “flaw”…Tod…who went against all the negatives and overcame them…thus starting a chain reaction of the other characters coming to terms and becoming better individuals.
    The ending scene after everyone has made peace is amazing. It can be interpreted in two ways. As the foxes look down from the hill at the houses where Tod grew up, it is light and cheery, and all the characters there are now happily coexisting. Where Tod and Vixey are sitting, it is dark. Between the two settings is a distinct dark and light line. Reminding viewers that while all appears settled, the issues of society playing roles and dividing certain groups is still around and it is up to the viewers to change it. (Racism) The other more positive view is that the brightly lit valley represents Tod’s past life, complete with Copper remembering the positives…and that chapter finished on a high note. The dark present where he sits with his new mate (and life) represents a future that has not yet been presented.
    Music wise, I loved how “Goodbye” was presented. It would not have the same effect if it were sung like a power ballad. It’s simple…you are going inside Tweed’s mind and feeling what she is at that moment. Most likely she is reliving a loss one again…after the death of her husband…and in reality would not be thinking of it in terms of music. So how this was done was perfect. The other two long songs fit the scene . “Best of Friends” fills the de-facto theme song well. It’s simple, but explains the nature of the two animals’ friendship…while Big Mama is hopeful through song that society will not dictate their future, but at least the two can enjoy childhood and build memories. “Appreciate the Lady” stands out. Not really as a theme, but a situation and scene setter, as well as a positive change for a Fox who so badly needs one. A great sultry song that oozes cool and tells one to be yourself and that your good qualities will take care of everything. The other two songs are incidental. Amos singing happily while driving…we all do that…And Big Mama firmly lecturing Tod…much more entertaining than her giving the the fox kit a royal butt chewing…especially when just seconds later that slap him with a huge dose of reality by showing him the storage shed of pelts.
    Yes, you can see we picked this film apart in college. And again I must state that you nailed this right on the head. Well done.

    My Little Pony the movie, are all rated PG which stands for Parental Guidence as opposed to rated G for General Audience. (Not Kids.)
    I think I may have summed up of how stupid the rating system is going to get.

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PG certainly feels like the new standard for "family entertainment," and G feels like the "kids entertainment," at least to me

    • @MDWolfe-ks5fu
      @MDWolfe-ks5fu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe The Disney Guy At least to you and I thank you for your honesty.
      But I want to emphasize of how that mentality is not going to hold up. One; since when kids are going to pay and watch it alone in a movie theater generally? Two; When people are going to look back at the movies such as Raider of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Gremlins, Beetlejuice even Watership Down, did you think that this is going to be okay for kids as well? Three; What is going to happen to the movies that are rated G, My Fair Lady, Ben-Hur even some of the great ones like Secret of Nimh, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King even The Hunchback of Notre Dame? Are they just going to flat out ignore them because it’s G rated film that mean it’s a kids film?
      If you look into the movie that I’ve mentioned like Ben-Hur for example you’ll be surprised of how well the rating doesn’t fit and how little sense does that make.
      With just one question in mind, have you seen the Nostalgia Critic’s does PG mean anything anymore?

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not actually, I haven't watched too much Nostalgia Critic lately even though I enjoy his stuff. But you do make a good point, do they retroactively re-rate older movies? Really at the end of the day, ratings are ratings and they. really don't have the weight that they used to in my opinion, at least aside from maaaaybe the occasional R purely from an age restriction standpoint. People are gonna see what they're gonna see

    • @MDWolfe-ks5fu
      @MDWolfe-ks5fu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe The Disney Guy That’s exactly the point, they don’t retroactively re-rate older movies and because of the inconsistencies, it’s a possibility that the rating system is going to be useless. You’re right about that people are going to see what they are going to see that the ratings don’t really hold that much weight.
      However, I highly recommend to check out that video at your free time and at your free will.

    Even though the movie title is called "The Fox and the Hound," only a quarter of it is similar to the book of the same name, while the most of it follows the same story as "The Ballad of the Belstone Fox", the latter in which actually does have a fox & a dog being friends since they were young but soon grew apart.

    Wow. I haven't seen the wall background since your Snow White and Pinocchio days, Joe! Anyway, I'm so glad you're back. This movie made me cry so many times when I was a kid. Whenever my friends give this movie hate, I would argue that this is one of the dark era's better movies because at least it has a cohesive narrative that tries to teach children more complex stories. Not that I hate Aristocats, Robin Hood, or the Rescuers or anything. (The Rescuers being my fav out of the three) I just feel that those stories went the simpler good vs evil route that they could afford, and considering that Disney died before these movies were done, I can understand why. Still, I love it whenever Disney gets daring with their movies.

      Believe it or not these are different places. Early reviews were my parents house, the last couple years have been my old apartment and now it's my new townhouse
      And yeah, I agree, while I have no issues with a simple good vs evil story, it is nice when we get something a little more complex to chew on every now and again

    A surprise, and what a surprise, to see this video in my subscription inbox. You really have a grip on the structure of your reviews, and it´s always a pleasure to view your stuff, though I´d like to note a few things about the recording.
    One: the echo. Semi-permanently och provisionally covering the walls with cloth should improve that significantly.
    Two: the autofocus. Is it possible to adjust it manually to prevent sudden blurriness?

    • @JoeTheDisneyGuy
      @JoeTheDisneyGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you mentioned these so I can address them haha. So this was my first review in the new place, so I was still getting to learn some of the ins and outs of it. I was hoping having a carpeted floor would help with the echo (my parent's house where I started the reviews has carpet and my apartment I used to live in had wood), but it would appear that the styrofoam drop ceiling I had in my parent's house also killed echo, so I'll experiment a bit to try and kill more echo at the new place.
      The autofocus took me by surprise. This is still a relatively new camera to me(old one was stolen in the break in) so still adjusting to it. Definitely gonna have to look at the focus settings though, granted it's a camcorder, so not sure how in depth those settings are. Honestly, I'd like to get a higher quality camera, but we'll see how Patreon goes.
      Thanks for the comment and constructive criticism though, it's certainly helpful

    It's kind of funny that Disney was so concerned about toning The Fox and the Hound down to get a G rating while the recently departed Don Bluth was actually hoping to get a PG rating for Secret of NIMH and was actually disappointed when it still inexplicably got a G rating. And then with their very next animated movie, The Black Cauldron, Disney had to tone it down to get a PG rating
