    My opinion is: it's not the gasket they use or the silicone gasket used, its the problem of the muffler mounted too close to the valve cover, and then the heat cooks that gasket.....,. You need to engineer a heat shield between that muffler/ engine. I know its not a lot of room between the two , but any shield would be better than no shield.

    Yep, after the 3rd gasket started leaking that's how I fixed mine. Love your channel and how you cut through the BS! You have helped me more than a few times and I get to laugh too. Thank you Taryl

    Ty Taryl , for yrs, I avoided watching any of your videos . I judged a book by it's cover. I accidentally caught the middle of one and realized you were for real a great small engine specialist and for the last two yrs. my go to guy for knowledge and humor .

    It worked for me on the second attempt! I put a thin coat on the head as well as a heavy coat on the valve cover. Also, on the second attempt, I followed the directions on the package about waiting an hour before tightening the bolts. Thanks to all the helpful comments and of course to Taryl. I'm a happy boy!

      How the heck did you get the thing back off to try it again. I did the fix but still had some leaking so I was gonna give it another shot but I can't get it apart! Any suggestions?

      Joe Elliott I know what you mean. I thought the same thing, but once I got a small area free, it pulled right off. I was afraid to cause damage with tools, but no need. just try to get one small area maybe gently with a screwdriver and you'll be surprised when it starts to give up. the hard part was cleaning it all off. I used a wire brush in a drill for the cover and a 3m type sanding pad for the head.

    Taryl - My LTX1045 had the leaky valve cover too. In fact, my mower caught fire with my kid riding it. Wife gave permission to go buy another $2,000 mower. I said heck no. Got on utube and found your video. Dude, you are awesome. Your vid was a little long getting to the point, but your fix was fantastic! I followed your instructions step by step, and fixed it. Today, ran the dog crap out of it and no more leaky leaky. I feel like I owe you bro. Thanks for posting this!

    Just fixed both valve covers on my cub cadet 1042 (kohler 715 v-twin) which has leaked since new . No leaks or oily crap blocking the airflow over the cylinders now! Engine now looks better than new and runs sweet - thanks Taryl, great video! :)

    I knew if I hung around long enough you would get to my ongoing problem, Ive replaced around 3 gaskets on my Courage, and still get a minor leak on to the muffler, usually it would quit when the mower got up to operating temps, I normally use the permatex and a new gasket, so forget the gasket just use a real thick bead of permatex let it dry for a day or 2. Finally I could not believe I could not get it to stop dripping. I think that the valve cover was made with to thin of metal and warps no matter how tight you tighten the bolts. Ive got my mower set up with a Tach, a Temp Gauge, and a Voltage Gauge. Also thanks for showing us about the magnets coming loose inside the flywheel, now my mower when starts puts out 14.1 volts. and while mowing slowly backs down to around 12.4 or so. You have done so much to help keep this mower cutting grass, and you have never set eyes on it. But it knows who you are and hears your name all the time and it made it another year, 455 hours on it so far.
    Thanks Taryl, Jr, Slippers, and I guess Rat Tail. What happen to the Guy who lived in your upstairs parts room, who used to throw parts down to you......

    I bought a Troy bilt horse xp blah blah used for a couple hundred bucks and it has this 22 courage motor. I pulled the dipstick while running and to my surprise it blew oil out in my face. Is this normal behavior for these? I know it would be a bad sign on most motors but the thing runs pretty good. Just wondering if it's worth messing with it. Looks about new but I'm only 200 bucks in it so far. Valve cover is leaking a little so I'll fix that. Thanks for the video!

    another thing you can try is set a ball peen hammer on the inside of each hole ahd give it a little whack to pop the valve cover back to original position. because over time tightening it bends the hole towards the head and causes it to leak. it happens all the time on chevy engines

      +Rob H 92 is good for storage has a longer shelf life. I was told at a service school that for every month gasoline sits it loses a Octane point. Plus ethanol in the fuel makes an engine run HOTTER. Higher octane fuels burn more efficiently thus reducing heat.

    Wow, just wow. I felt like I was watching my dad showing me how to replace the valve gaskets on a '77 Ford Granada. Same exact thing, um, but different. He had a bridge that he used to pop out for some reason, but I digress.
    I just picked up a 19hp Cub Cadet with the Kohler Courage and it's doing the same thing. The guy that I got it from said that oil must have been from the guy that replaced the oil plug when they changed it. Go figure.
    Engine sounds good and I am going to get a can of oil as I don't want to ruin it. I am assuming that would be the same thing. But they have a saying about assuming. It's an LT1042 made in 2006, with a SV590. Just want to make sure before I go ripping stuff apart and mess it up.
    Any assistance or guidence would be great.

    • @mateobrainardo4770
      @mateobrainardo4770 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Fully set up” depends on how wicked thick (1-1/2”) you apply it, and if it’s 95•F or 27•F. Relative humidity, and direct sunlight are also inflammatory pFactors.
      Mr. Mullet Dactyl recommends letting it set up all night, while sleeping on his knees on hard cold concrete. There is no other way. No pain, no gain bruh!

    Would your Permatex gasket repair be preferable to the stock factory oil sump gasket on a Briggs & Stratton opposed twin engine?

    • @2aminitials
      @2aminitials 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WeldstarCreations I've read the sump gasket helps to keep crankshaft end play in spec. Using only silicone might result in too little end play.

    • @TarylFixesAll

      +WeldstarCreations No , You need the gasket to set the engines end play on the crankcase. I use permatex High Tack sealant on those. It comes in a spray can like spray paint. Very sticky. Buy a can & check it out.

      Let it fully cure for a coupla weeks, then tighten those bolts till about the aluminum strips it’s shit off. 4-500 ft-lbs should do it. If not, use a pipe extension on your breaker bar. Tighten the hella them...
      Never leak again, and when it does, shove fireworks in the gas tank and send it to hell.

    I had to do that with my dads Honda GSV190 engine on his HRU217D lawnmower after adjusting the valve tappets.
    Honda do fit a gasket on at the factory but they tell you to use high temperature silicone sealant on the valve cover in the service manual.
    That Kohler valve cover looks like it's a boomerang shape, I've been wondering if I've been a boomerang to this place :- www.tomago.com.au/
    I paid them a visit to there in 1996 & I'm sure some of the Australian Aborigines think that I'm a returning boomerang who should work there, many of the non returning ones left.

    Kholer became a disgrace when they screwed-up quality. The chicken will have teeth before I buy anything which bears the name Kohler, unless, its 30 or 40 years old.
