Couldn't get Eric's website to open, one of those "Secure connection failed" deals.
Considering good Electrified acoustics did not arrive until 1968--1969 using a Piezo pickup or better pickups as in a smaller Piezo Clip On Microphone made originally for TV news and upright Bass Guitar, I am not surprised players loved using slightly Older Martin or Gibson Acoustic Guitars where they were louder, brought bigger Condenser Microphones of what they liked best, or used what are now early design Sound Hole Humbuckers either a direct cable or direct jack.
Mr Gibbs is doing a great service collecting all these stories and storytellers
Amen.
He follows a line of musicologists who spend a lifetime cataloging peoples memories and the american song book. Good ol' fashion Word of Mouth.
These stories and interviews are great. They need to be entered into the library of Congress or something. I'm serious. Once these old guys pass on, they take their stories with them. Otis, you are the Man !!! Thanks again.
Jerry Garcia Ottis…. Wonderful… the only man to have a 4 page obituary in the Independent newspaper uk ❤👍🏴
I still miss jerry 😢 thanks otis
Don't forget about the late great Vassar Clements who played fiddle with these guy's too. An amazing talent.
His lp entitled Hillbilly Jazz, is a masterpiece of country and bluegrass meeting jazz and swing... DJ Fontana, David Bromberg, Gordon Terry... 👍👍👍
Clements was not in the orbit of the Bay Area scene until the 1970s. Thompson was picking bluegrass with Garcia, David Nelson, Sandy Rothman, Bob Hunter, etc in the early 1960s
Saw Vassar Clements sit in with Panic at Starwood in Nashville
Wow, that was fun!!!
Thanks, Otis. Thanks, Eric.✌️
I’ll take more of that, please 😊
Get out the note pad people, we're going in! So much great information, and such a great Cat. Let us know if you get out to The Bay Area Otis. Have a Great Weekend!
Hours more, please!
What a sweetheart that Eric is. Thanks Otis and Eric for this.
Good job Otis. Nobody gets the real interesting and inside stuff like you. It's been a real pleasure.
❤❤Garcia, Grisman, Rice, & Thompson. Some of the best musicians that have ever picked up instruments❤❤
The Beatle Country story!
Thanks...
What a lovely guy!
Jerry & David , and Company made some of the Best Music , Jerry has said , The Best music i made was with David, I listen to that Music Often, It was Recorded so well, I wish that you could hear it on My Klipsch Cornerhorn speakers, at High Volume, it is Awesome, Cousin Figel
I hear ya man ,,
I'm listeing on Bose ,, old school
This feels more like testimony than entertainment. I feel so lucky to hear these wonderful stories and enjoy the window on to a world I never knew. I think a lot of people will in posterity also. Thanks!
❤❤❤❤❤. Yes.
The 'Jear Bear'. Thank you, Otis. Jerry is a major influence for many musicians.
Love his honesty and reasoning why he didn't want to be in the Dead. I bet his Martin is sweeeet.
Thanks for preserving those stories, and sharing them.
A man with integrity. Know thyself. Otis' interview style is excellent--stays out of the way.
Thanks Otis, that was a great interview with one of my flatpicking heroes. His Kicking Mule album was a staple on my turntable in college in the mid 70's when I was trying to figure it all out by ear.
I understand lol by ear
Kicking Mule! Write em a letter with a check, they would send you albums in the mail. What a thrill to drop the needle on fresh vinyl and sounds like never before. Big thanks to innovators and owners Stephan Grossman and Ed Denson.
Thanks Otis, I could listen to this man for hours, what a treat. Totally cool. You're appreciated brother.
I’ve seen Eric and Suzy many times. They are pillars of the Berkeley and Bay Area folk and bluegrass scene going way back. Once saw them at a backyard party in the mid-80s as their Cajun incarnation The Aux Cajunals. Most recent time is last November at Hopmonk in Sebastopol, the two of them playing and talking about old blues and Cajun songs (in French, of course) for a hundred or more people on an early Wednesday evening. Great stuff, super entertaining, down to earth- catch them if you can. Their daughter, Allegra, plays bass and has a radio show on KPFA on Sunday afternoons that features music in the same vein.
Thank you for posting !!
As always Otis, good stuff. Eric is one interesting fella.
Always Thumbs up for Otis.
Fantastic interview!
Many thianks to you and Eric for all this.
I’ve followed Jerry’s breadcrumb trail for sure, his road leads to some great music. I never would have know about John Hurt, for one, if it wasn’t for Jerry and them playing and sharing their influences. Thank You for all the great videos. I’ve been listening to nothin but your podcast on the road lately.
Fantastic
I. Love. Him. What a treasure. 😊 His memory is freeking incredible.
This is a great interview. I was particularly enlightened by the discussion of his days in Greenwich Village. The "sandalmaker" Allan Block was the father of guitarist Rory Block, by the way.
Holy COW...this is classic, OTIS. It is like hearing the origin stories of the bluegrass scene....makes me happy to discover that hanging out with your friends evolved organically into a really cool scene.
Thanks Otis. Your a gem 🎵😎👍
One of your best Otis! Thank you! The Washington Square scene info really brought me back!
I haven't had many guitar lessons in my life, but I did take one with Eric. I. shied away from talking about Jerry and the Dead because he's significant outside of his association with Jerry. Really happy this interview happened because it provides a lot of insight on just before the Warlocks/the Dead became a band. But it also makes us consider that there could have been alternative members in the band. Thank you!
I just got schooled! Thanks Eric & Otis🤩
So great when amazing people are also endlessly talented. Great interview. I just happened to rewatch the Dead documentary on Amazon earlier this week. I’m not a dead head, but def recommended
Great interview, Otis-- thanks so much for once again making a beautiful bridge and allowing me and many others to venture and cross it. With and through you, I have learned about integral, musical history, and so many world class players. You always bring a delightful blend of music, personalities, and harmonious royalty to top it all off.
I am amazed by Eric's humbleness, and memory that allows him to be a great story teller. He is a kind soul, who has many special gifts. The proof to this is obvious in the comment section, and how many ears and minds that his music has deeply touched.
You, sir are a great artist and architect in your own right. Your passion and realness can be felt every time you talk to us. Lastly, as I alluded to, this bridge is another masterpiece, and I thank you for just being you and sharing all that you deem worthy to share. Stay well, beautiful and above all, safe. You are a treasure!
This video was excellent, Otis!
Thanks for shining some light on Thompson, an extremely important figure in the west coast bluegrass/acoustic strings scene. Most deadheads who look into Garcia's early life have heard/read his name, but he has a bigger legacy than simply his association with Garcia. Much like blues cats such as Robert Lockwood and Johnny Shines who got sick of being asked about Robert Johnson, Thompson may tire of being constantly button-holed about Garcia (though he was a good sport here). Pleased to hear him mention (Brooks) Adams Otis, a major documentarian of so much bluegrass music, from his tapes made of the bluegrass greats during his time on the east coast, to the west coast scene (B.A.O. became pals in the army with Roland White, and later recorded The Kentucky Colonels, White's band with his brother Clarence White). I was very excited when I saw this, and I hope you do get out to Berkeley and do a feature on Suzy&Eric and Thompson's fabulous D-28.
2nd those emotions ,,
Fantastic.
Love the videos Otis sure appreciate the time you put into all of this.
Thankee for the stroll down the lane to "Back in the Days..."

I don’t see Half Moon Bay listed?
🥺
Real Folklore, thanks!
Thanks for another great session, Otis! I love the song, "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight".
Great stuff!!!
Incredible memories.
Great stuff, love it! 👍
More good stufff, Otis.
Thank you!!!
Otis,
Good job “herding the cats” during post production of these interviews. You can tell some of these guys tend to be all over the place in their recollection and you manage to make them more cohesive.
I love these full length interviews. It would be awesome to see and hear all of the Vince talk
What an incredible fount of information and memories! Thanks, Otis, great and important stuff.
‘…the Beatles..who are they’?😂
Another great interview,,,,,,,
Eric is one of the greatest bluegrass guitar pickers in the world. Listen to his album with Tony Rice playing backup rhythm. It's astounding.
great ending brother otis much love - SJOCR
Very cool! Thanks for posting this!
This is so cool, love it man thank you
this was cool
Eric has the coolest looking D-28 ever!
The Kingston Trios album Time to Think is outstanding!
Merci 💋❤️✝️ CANNABIS.......
“Thompson’s Real” is a great little (fairly obscure) album. Has a young Tony Rice on it too!
Just scored a vinyl copy of "HOT DAWG"....Highly recommend it
Otis, I have family and roots in Berkeley. If you come out to visit, we have you covered. Just let me know and a nice, private room with its own bath and outside access is ready for you. I have family that knows Eric’s family, though I’ve never met him. He is a local icon.
Come and go as you wish, with no expectations of involvement in your work there. No interference, though dinner will be on the table and coffee ready in the morning.
Much love to you.
Man,, I love this channel,
and the people that collect here ,,
awesome ,,
The face at the end😂
❤❤❤
Unreal ,I have that Beatles country album, I like it too, it's got a mad version of yellow submarine, and coincidently it's right next to Grismans hot dawg, and Old and in the way, I've been reorganising and I put a whole lot of countryish albums on the same shelf, well a sideways box really, I'm almost out of record space they are now piling up on the very small area of floor available.
Bunches of knowledge there….thought/was hoping to dig more into some deep untold Jerry, but nonetheless, great info man.
i wanted to see the guitar !!
Tapes in 61? Was that reel to reel?
🎙️✨💓
👈🏼Made This Jerryholic's Day 🫶🏼🙏TY Otis🤘🏼😎
It’s important to remember that these guys weren’t hippies. Hippies didn’t really exist when this all began. The folkies really begat the Beats. Far more politically aware than the hippies.
Weir is really very pretty, so you can't feel bad.
obviously im not a deadhead but if u showed me this cat and said he was or is in the dead id say of course he was is....lol...tho hes obviously way more likable lol
Interesting guy, but a bit of a rambling storyteller...kind of lose track of the point of the story. Would like to have seen his Martin.
