  • Capoeira Tutorial: Au de Coluna, also know as Au Esquisito, Au de Costas or Gumbi.
    I was training the other day, and felt the urge to do a tutorial for one of my favorite moves, the Au de Coluna. I've been helping a few friends learning this move, and I find they are responding well to my tips. I have a bit of an original take on this, so I figured I'd share it with more people.
    By Aldanie AKA Macaquinho. Training with Capoeira Passo a Frente under the awesome professor Bocao.
    - Let's spread Capoeira awesomeness around the world!
    About me:
    I'm still fairly green in the Capoeira world, and as of 3/2013, I've only been training for a year and a half. I'm just very passionate about all that Capoeira has brought to my life and the life of those around me, and I want to help spreading Capoeira awesomeness all around the world. Join me!

    It sure it is a leap of faith Valentona. One thing that helped me was approaching the hop from the below, and from above. What I mean by that is that I worked both on arching my back when I did the standard Au, and from below by working on the "Ponte" (bridge) drills. Other than that, all I can suggest is to work on that leap on a cushioned surface to help you loose the fear of falling. I think everyone ends up falling a few times on this one. Good Luck!

    Muito bom. Tem pessoas que acham que a capoeira é algo fácil, bobo de fazer. Mas ao executar os movimentos é que percebemos quanto treino precisa. Quanta força precisa ter nos braços e pernas. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    Additional information: "Esquisito" means "weird" in portuguese, "Coluna" means "column" but also the way we call "spine", "Costas" means "back" (and also "coast"). "Aú" (pronounced ah-OOH) maybe is an onomatopia or an African word. It is meaningless to anyone here who doesn't know capoeira. It is the "cartwheel" movement. ("popularly" or "non-capoeirist" known here as "estrela" which means "star")
    Aú esquisito = Weird Aú
    Aú de costas = Aú by/from back
    Aú de coluna = Aú by/from spine

    • @rafifgmail3511
      @rafifgmail3511 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow lot of au variation, i just can do cartweel only. But how to combine au with other move or other au ?. I can do cartwheel but i want it combine with other move but feel not flowing.

    you can practice using the edge of your bed: you stand near one of the corners of the bed and place one hand on the floor, right in front of the bed, and then you throw the other hand, while your back goes above the mattress, it helps a lot and its safe

    Thank you. So, it is a leap of faith in fact (i thought it was just me - as when i watch you and another capoerista doing it it looks ontrolled and like a hop.) Thank you for that advice and i will keep working on it on a cushioned floor : )

      GeoCode6 Thanks for the feedback. It's a bit tough to learn capoeira on your own. I'd always recommend finding a school, but don't let not having a school stop you from it. Capoeira is just too awesome not to give it your best, even when facing challenges. I'd love to hear what you are working on or what you'd like to see. I may turn into a future video.

      You are right, i would love to have a angola mestre but i live in Greece and in my town there is only one school but they mostly do regional stuff and its not my style. So we are having a group playing capoeira and teaching one another whenever we have time (thank science there is youtube). My main problem is handstands and not having back flexibility so your videos are very helpful already.

    At a statuesque... 5'5' I've been told I move around in the roda, and outside the roda, like a Macaquinho. I love doing Volta por simas, macaco's, S Dobrado's, etc. Outside the roda, it's hard for me to not to be tempted to jump on any climbable surface. I've been like this ever since I remember.... The other day I caught myself clapping with my feet. I'm not sure they could have called me anything else.

    This is a great tutorial! But wow man... I can't even reach the floor with my second hand while trying the bridge-spin-bridge drill you showed. It feels like my shoulders and back are made of concrete so I can't really reach back with my hand... my arm just stops in mid air. What do I need to get out of this, just practicing and exagerating my brige/ponte? Something else?

    • @CapoeiraTrainingClub
      @CapoeiraTrainingClub  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the super late reply. I'm really curious to hear how you are doing with your shoulder flexibility now. The idea to exaggerate the bridge is not a bad one. Focus on sticking out your chest to help open up the shoulders. You can also do the same on a hand stand propped against the wall: Get on a handstand close to the wall with your back facing the wall. Then walk the hands away from the wall, while keeping your feet on the wall; they'll go lower on the wall as you walk away. Focus on sticking your chest out too. I would also recommend adding yoga to your regiment. It will do wonders for your flexibility, and there's tons of channels that are easy to access on youtube. I hope it helps. BTW I just released a new video. It's a bit different from a tutorial; just sharing a sequence. Hope this helped.

  • @sprazer
    @sprazer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man, i have been working on this move for a half tear now.
    Let me ask you, did you get that much of your back flexibility from doing the bridge alone before you moved onto the hop? Or you train the hop and it improved your back flexibility.
    Thanks for your video,
    1 more question , is this gumby style will help in raiz or does it feel like you are doing raiz with your hands on the ground?
