    The Secret History is one of my fave books ever! Like top 3. And I feel like it’s not for everyone. But the whole pagan, cult-like, dark academic, atmospheric tone of the book was just perfect for me. I love the way it makes you think a lot about morality and humanity and it’s just so so compelling and intense.

      The Secret History is such a great place to start and so enjoyable! They're less "classically" Dark Academia but Frankenstein and The Picture of Dorian Gray are great places to get started too as they're quite short!

    Hi Ciara, thank you for sharing! I like mostly non fiction books, biographies especially, and was so touched of Tara Westover's story, too. I can’t say, I enjoyed it, because it made me sad to think what parents can do to their children by living their deepest (weird) conviction... Do you know: there are some interviews with Tara on TH-cam? In this Genre I loved even more THE GLASS CASTLE by Jeannette Walls. Her life was so influenced by her parents, too: they were living a kind of irresponsible boho life, not uneducated, but without taking good care of their children. Her writing style allowed me to enjoy it so much, I even read it twice. Jeannette saved herself like Tara, but they are very different personalities. Meanwhile Jeannette wrote more books, which I enjoyed as well.
    Amazing, how DIFFERENT the books you considered the best are😉. Although I (except Harry Potter and Lord of the rings) don’t read fantasy, I’m attracted by the Night Circus 🎪...wonderful cover... Stay happy and healthy, love from Germany, Monika❣️

    • @ciarascorner
      @ciarascorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Monika! I know exactly what you mean, the story was extremely impactful but because it was sad, 'enjoy' probably isn't the right word! I'll definitely watch those interviews with Tara as I'd love to hear more from her! You're the second person to recommend The Glass Castle so I DEFINITELY need to read it asap! Thanks so much for the recommendation!

      Hi, Ciara, I saw the other comment after I sent my comment and answered to it😉. Forgot to mention, that EMMA is my all time favourite Jane Austen book! I also watched all the different movies. Who doesn’t know a Emma, so convinced to know the best for everybody...and who isn’t a Emma sometimes oneself. So easy to decide what is best...for others😁. From Donna Tartt I only read THE GOLDFINCH, which I liked enough to give THE SECRET HISTORY a try. It was also mentioned by one of my favourite booktubers Claudia from SPINSTER'S LIBRARY in the UK 🇬🇧. Another booktuber and a big Jane Austen fan, too, is HELENE JEPPESEN in Denmark 🇩🇰 . Both of them have cats, they seem to make reading even cozier. Happy reading, Monika❣️

    How did you like the Bird Blend Tea from the previous video?
    I unfortunately was not able to do any extra reading. I usually only get to read one book a month because my family and career but man I sure do enjoy the time I get to read lol.

    • @ciarascorner
      @ciarascorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh totally forgot to mention those teas, so of the big ones that I got, Apple Strudel was really nice but the Cherry Bakewell was quite underwhelming because it just tasted of cherry but not almond (which is quiet essential to a bakewell) - then both of the samples, the lemon and the English breakfast tea were really good and I will definitely buy the full size versions of them in my next order! And aw, I totally understand, when you have other priorities it’s really hard to fit reading in!

    • @theokiereader
      @theokiereader 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ciarascorner I will have to try them. I've been wanting to drink more teas. I recently tried a few Twilings brand black teas (English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Lady Grey). Earl and Lady were pretty good cause they weren't straight black tea. EB and IB weren't bad, I just wouldn't go out of my way to drink them. I've been wanting to try more herbals; which it sounds like Bird Blend is in that market. On a slightly different topic, have you tried the London Fog tea at Starbucks? That's what started this whole thing lol.

    Such a good discussion of “Educated”. I loved that book because Tara told her story in a nuanced, compassionate and forgiving way. I was particularly touched by the moment when some of her family members seemed to come close to revealing doubt about their world view but then, sadly, being drawn back in. It happens at some points with the only sister and the mother.
    I also read Emma during lockdown and really enjoyed it! Have you seen the new film adaptation? It’s great :)

    • @ciarascorner
      @ciarascorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, totally - it was so nuanced which made it even more impactful! Those parts were really emotional as I feel like they really highlighted the isolation Tara faced in her decisions! I watched the new Emma movie in May and I LOVED it! :)

    I enjoying listening to memoirs, read by the authors themselves. The more serious and inspiring ones I have read are: The Education of an Idealist by Samantha Power (former UN-ambassador), Becoming by Michelle Obama and Good Talk by Mira Jacob (an indian-american woman, very funny and moving). The lighter memoirs that I have devoured are: Talking as fast as I can by Lauren Graham (compulsory for Gilmore-fans!) and The Greatest Love Story Ever Told by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly (listening to this feels more like listening to their loving and teasing conversation, absolutely wonderful!)

    3. Open by Andre Agassi
    Also, I just finished reading Mindset by Carol Dweck. It's a beautiful book about how all of us have two mindsets. One is fixed and the other is growth. And it provides us with tools to always work towards a growth mindset. A very easy read but so valuable. Hope you check them out soon 💛
