We live in a time where there is more avalanche awareness then there ever has been in history. My social media is filled with posts from local avalanche forecasters. Social media has made backcountry skiing safer then it ever has been through avalanche forecasting and awareness.
Minimum AST level 1. Minimum 3 people. Gear & knowledge. Naaah, I'm going to follow those tracks; dropping in fast & light, solo. SAR exists to respond to legitimate back country accidents, not egregious premeditated stupidity.
I feel for all you guys out there. Almost all lines are much more safely ridden if the rider goes slower, does proper cuts, pauses, and is patient. Yes its old school, but there was a reason for it.... they didn't just suck. The filming industry does lines that work for cinema and wow factor, not for the backcountry rider. Unless you got the $$$ leave the Camera at home unless you understand it ups your risk 10X and most likely will con-troll your interaction with the mountain. Be yourself, patient, and be in control of your interaction with the mountain. Thats why we are there right?
Going fast and stomping a full line isn't a bad thing to do as long as you know where your run outs are and what kind of conditions you are in and who you are with. This ride slower nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. It's on the rider to make safe choices and know their limits and know the terrain, that doesn't mean they need to go slow.
My father-in-law’s ex girlfriend watched a ski movie with us one time and she just shook her head and made some comment about people having more testosterone than brains. I dunno…avalanche science seems pretty brainy to me. When I used to do a lot of creek boating I don’t think I ever came across anyone who’d been doing that at that level who I would call dumb. Figuring out how to build tandem high line octopus rigs to effect rescues doesn’t seem like the kind of activity in which most stupid people would participate. We don’t talk to her much anymore.
What I learned in avalanche school: There are many tests that can tell you a slope is unstable, but there is no definitive test that can tell you it is stable.

I guess my point was that the folks who do this stuff very rarely do it without some level of training/education and certainly never without some type of risk assessment. What about the 100s of ski and snowboard movies made before social media. Before avalanche forecasting? Here's an idea. HOW ABOUT you SHOW us what goes into making these movies and show the avalanche saftey crew in stead of having them behind the scenes??? IF ANYONE should be held responsible its TETON GRAVITY RESEARCH. NOT your average joe with a social media account.
Crazy sport footage has been around forever. I think its lazy and misguided to blame social media for any individuals ignorance or non compliance. People have been making dumb choices recreating since.... forever.

There's a difference between virtue signalling and actually doing something about backcountry safety. This video aligns with the former and not the latter.
No delusions here. I've seen the real crashes. Most do not make it onto TH-cam. Also, you should know Nico is one of the most special skiers I've ever seen. Better than Candide, ez. If you watched Nico and Travis Rice in a resort, you would be amazed by what they do.
