Small accounts should not be afraid of trading defined risk in futures especially if trading zero DTE as a way to avoid PDT rules. Better BPR with span margin too. I started there and am still 75% futures trading in my portfolio. Great stuff as always

Don't forget SPX, XSP, /MES, and /ES have better tax advantages compared to SPY and QQQ.

I have a few TastyTrade accounts and would like to trade 0DTE SPX Butterflies after the open. Is there a way to set an OCO order so that I take profits if I see a $1.50 profit or take losses if it trades at a $4.00 loss? I've been paper trading this and I will make profits 9 out of 10 days. But if I take a max loss, it would wipe out all those gains. The key to this trade is taking the loss and not let it run. So how to I enter an OCO for butterflies?

the problem with spy and the q''s is that your return on long otm options is really minimal most of the time-- spx you can buy even 1 otm long option and get a decent return if it moves in your favor

Thank you for another very helpful video. I've been trading options for over 41 years. (I was a stockbroker 1982-1988) and I can honestly say that you two are the best in the business. "Thank you" for all that you do in educating the public. I'm a huge fan and will be opening an account with your company w/in 30 days.

How much money did you lose in these 41 years? If you still keep watching TH-cam videos on the subject then it looks like you are still trying to make it. But the chances are as good as in Vegas, just that in Vegas you would have more fun. I am a professional trader but never ever touch options because there is no edge for traders (buy side). The only edge is on the sell side: if you want to make money with options you should be writing options and selling these to all the gamblers and pocket the premium.

If you let the trade expire on the same day you opened it, it is not considered a day trade.

I don’t think that’s true. I know for SPY market makers have to close it for you so it will have to be closed which still counts as a day trade. I’ve tried this and was hit with a 4th day trade 2 years ago on Tasty. You might want to call broker to make sure.

  • @Rob-db4cc

/MES is cash settled, IIRC. The slide with that information appears to be incorrect. Good presentation. If you let an SPY or QQQ option go to expiration/settlement, does that count as a closing trade for the day? If it's not the completion of a round trip, then the PDT (dumb dang rule) counter stays static.

It can be if your broker closes out your trade (like robinhood). I'd stick with indices, that way, you can let it expire worthless on the same day without fear of auto-liquidation/close.

Yea but you also have to put up way more money to buy 45 days out.
Say you put $1000 on a 0dte put and stock goes up and you lose $500.
Or put $10,000 on a 45 dte, Stock goes up and you lose about $500 maybe $1000.
Maybe that’s just my experience but for me the farther out it is the less percentage I’ll lose, But it’s more expensive so it evens out.

I (mistakenly) started trading more aggressively (different strategies/ larger quantities) and I was humbled after a few draw downs and lost all of the gains.
