Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West. Home Free did a great cover of this song as a tribute to Kenny Rogers.
I always thought this song was two gamblers at a table, until one day I realized that it was two guys on a train in the middle of the night, and the "gambler" was just letting go of his life experiences to the guy sitting across from him. Once I got that, this song hits hard.
So glad you are reacting to some of your unknowns from We Are The World 🤗. PLEASE react to his live performance of “Lady” 🙏🏻 It was written for him by Lionel Richie. I think it’s really one that is more down your lane.
Yes, this is a classic country song. It was also made into a TV movie, as were several of Kenny’s songs. He was an extremely talented and popular singer/actor. He was great friends with Lionel Ritchie and recorded Lionel’s song ‘Lady’. We lost him last year and it was so sad. Dolly Parton was another long-time friend of Kenny’s. They toured together for many years and released a few duets.
@@ABtheKreator we are still waiting for Coward of the County. We'll I just got on your page today but I will be waiting with everyone else now. Subscribed with alerts.
He's such a legend!! Home free collabed "children go where I send thee" before he passed. So they covered this, paying very heartfelt respect to Mr Kenny Rogers. They adored him! You should check those out. 🥰😍
Kenny was a story teller in a lot of his songs. Some will give you songs but I would recommend Reuben James (story of a poor black man who takes in a boy that was tossed away). Many of his songs had great stories. Ruby don't take your Love to Town is another sleeper.
This is basically why they picked him for this song because he has such a storytelling voice and then of course he looks the part.... literally since they made movies from the song and he stared in it! Gooooodluckin man with that raspy voice! 🥰❤️
This song is actually a metaphor of life itself. Saying that even a losing hand is a winning hand because you cant find someone or the something "winning" until you lose first. Like how many heartbreaks did you have before you found the right one. How many jobs did you go through that hurt you financially before you found a better paying one. And in the end he says I found an ace that I could keep was the lessons that the old man just taught him.
Kenny Roger performed a song with Home Free. He actually went looking for them after his son’s teacher told him about them. Home Free also did a cover of this song as a tribute to Kenny Rogers soon after his passing.
In my opinion this man was more than a legend in his time. He had a voice that just commanded attention. I was fortunate enough to have seen him in concert several times and every one was better than the last.
Definitely one of my favorite metaphor songs of all time. Especially that “every hands a winner, and every hands a loser”. On the subject of gambling, I’d bet money that Secretary wants you to react to LADY from Kenny Rogers next!
Whoop Whoop! Love me some Kenny! He is one sexy silver bearded Casanova! And if you want another ballad that IMHO is even better than this one, I highly recommend, "Coward of the County" ~ Beth Ann
Loved Kenny Rogers since I was a kid, my parents listened to him alot. Didn't understand the lyrics but once I could, his story telling and singing made really love his songs. Definitely my favourite country singer. My top one is COWARD OF THE COUNTY, should react to it and we could both have some orange juice with your reaction.
Kenny hit a lull in his career in the early 80s. He really liked the Commodores, so he reached out to Lionel Richie who had just left the group and asked him to write a song for him. Lionel wrote Lady and that kickstarted a career resurgence for Kenny, and they ended up becoming great friends. That’s how Kenny ended up on We Are The World. But yeah, watched a documentary about Kenny about a year ago and it was obvious that when those 2 were on screen together just how much they loved each other. Good stuff.
This song is not really about gambling---it's a metaphor for life. I had an uncle who used to cry like a baby, when I played this song (he struggled with multiple sclerosis).
This is the first song that I ever heard from Kenny Rogers. I fell in love. When I was about 10 years old, I had a rack of 45 records , one was this song. All I wanted for Christmas that year was record player, that my dad got for me. This was the first record I played.
Kenny died March of 2020 He was with the New Minstral Singers then later as a soloist though he was known to sing with Dolly Parton from time to time. He was a huge entertainer.
Five great songs by Kenny Rogers you might like are: 1. "Islands in the Stream" (with Dolly Parton) 2. "Lady" 3. "(I Am) The Greatest" 4. "Coward Of The County" 5. "Lucille"
Lady, the live version!!! Written by Lionel Richie and sung by Kenny, it was FIRE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! You will NOT be disappointed...he was a heartthrob without even trying!
Kenny Rogers started with the First Edition. That was a pretty decent group and he was the stand out. The style of groups back then were somewhere between folk, country and pop. Lots of songs in that genre were stories. Gordon Lightfoot was a storyteller with an amazing voice that you might want to check out. More folk than country. My fav Kenny Rogers song is Lady, She Believes in Me, Through the Years and All of My Life. But those are all ballads. He’s famous for Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to aTown, The Coward, and Lucille. Jim Croce is a folk rock storyteller who was amazing. Operator. I Got a Name. Time in a Bottle. I’m a 70s girl and that era had a lot of amazing innovators and storytellers
Home Free did a cover of this but they also collaborated with him on “Children, Go Where I Send Thee” that was AWESOME!! They were so honored that he approached them!
Mom has taken me to see Kenny 5 times !! I swear !! All the women loved Kenny .. RIP Kenny .. he just passed last year !! R.I.P.Kenny! This man was a hunk and his voice was so smooth and commanding. So glad i got to grow up on his music. Love your reviews and Thanks for sharing.
That part about not counting your money until the dealin's done reminds me of a guy who worked with us at a factory. He not only counted his money right there, he gloated and bragged about his winnings at the table. I thought we were going to get killed in the parking lot. Never went gambling with that dude again. I do think though that the lessons in this song are a metaphor for life. Love this song. That one chorus where there is that lyrical echo "Young got to know when to hold'em .... when to hold'em Know when to fold'em.... when to fold'em ....."That has a real gospel feel to me.

Kenny was a country music OG who we lost a few years. He has a huge catalog of music. This is probably one of the best known. It was in the movie Maverick. So was he, Kenny had a small role.
Never was a huge fan of country music however, after hearing this new “country” and not by choice, heard it at work in the past, the old country sounds better and better. Do “Lucille” next.
Also I think you would be happily surprised by Michael Bolton. He has a large catalogue of hits. You should start with “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Tell secretary to bring her fan.
🔥🔥💯💯 Reaction, one of my favorite artist, two more songs to check out, Lady (great live video out there) and Coward of the county.. Kenny and Dolly Parton have many great duets together, but my favorite is a live video of one called "we've got tonight", which Kenny recorded with Sheena Easton, Kenny and Dolly have some good laughs after singing the song on this video that's out there....
For me it is also the game of life. At the beginning he is out of aces in life, so the gambler gives him advice. Also the gambler “broke even” in the night and in his final words etc. so to me the gambler died in his sleep. Another like this is Coward of the county.
Home Free did a duet with Kenny not long before he died called Children Go Where I Send Thee...and after the video he tells how he met Home Free 😄 ....love Kenny. Listen to his duet with Dolly Parton, Islands In The Stream, classic. I used to have his Gambler album 😊
Kenny and Home Free did a song together not too long before he died. "Children Go Where I Send Thee" it is a toe tapping rendition. You might want to check it out. No matter how old Kenny got, he never lost his voice.
Kenny Roger's actually starred in a string of movies called The Gambler. Which is where this song is from. The movies are funny. Kenny is as good of an actor as he is a singer. You are amazing, I look forward to your videos everyday!❤❤
I really enjoy your reactions to music that I grew up with. The joy and humor and incites you have really add to listening to the music. The gambling advice is a metaphor for life...
The gambler died in his sleep, but his advice stuck with the traveller.
