There's a version of this referenced in Brian Jacques' "Castaways of the Flying Dutchman" and I could never figure out what the melody was supposed to be just by reading the words as a kid. This video solved a 13 year mystery for me.
Halyard shanty, yes. But also a furling shanty. We used it while “bellying up “ to the yard. On each “hang down”, we would reach down for an arm length grasp of sail, pull it up and trap it with our bellies against the yard arm. When the shantyman sang the verse, we rested. Awesome song.
I very much appreciate what you do, shanties are a true gems in music industry. They're underappreciated and undervalued. Thank you very much for your videos and as always, good job Sir !
4 days late but I always start a trip with a shanty from the shanty man of shanty men. This'n is one of my favorites. Love the evolution of the format. Keep givin' her hell, ol' dad!
If the blood red rose relates literally, I imagine it being running blood from wounds, scuffs and bruises from the work? "Growl you may but go you must, growl too much your head we'll bust, you pinks and posies." Referring to the new recruits or people pressed into service who haven't grown callouses? Or, if they're british soldiers, it could be the hanging Johnny's making a return? *We believe what we want.* In any case, Thank you so much for these songs!
Love this shanty and this version of it. The slower version was always one of the best sung by drunken folkie crowds in the pubs of Melbourne Australia back in the day. People always sang this one with such feeling that even the most off key slurred wailing came up sounding like a harmony. Also enjoyed the tour of your music den. I wouldn't mind a brief introduction to and demo of each of your instruments...unless they are purely decorative of course lol.
Yes, I like this pace for this one too. Nice to hear about that kind of singalong in Melbourne. All of the instruments are real working instruments, but not all of them are in working order. The balalaika, for instance, needs a new bridge and tuning machines.
One of my very favorite shanties. I learned it from the singing of Ewan MacCall & A.L. Lloyd. The tune is just a little different but their harmony on the pinks and posies part is wonderful. Your variant was probably used more than theirs back in the days of sail. Thank you. Oh-also there is a ballad about Napoleon 2 or 3 called Bonny Bunch of Roses O, which refers to Scotland, England, Ireland & Wales as the Bonny Bunch of Roses O. I used to sing it at the Renaissance Fairs in No & So. California. Thanks for all your lovely renderings of our beloved shanties.
You refer to head canon and personal interpretations, and having never read about Blood Red Roses but only hearing a couple different versions, I had a totally different train of thought. I had always assumed that the talk of roses, pinks and posies was a tongue-in-cheek callout of the crewmembers working themselves red in the face as being wimps. Something like "Quit whining and keep pushing, you pansies." The "blood red" I assumed was due to blood rushing to their heads from physical exertion. Really interesting to hear the different ideas. I hadn't even thought about the red coats. You sometimes seem a bit hesitant to go on at length about the history, but I absolutely love that stuff. Thank you and more, please!
I think you are probably right about the pinks and posies, but who knows for sure. The theory about the roses is a good one. As usual, I don't think we need to decide what the real truth is (and nor could we,) we can just enjoy the possibilities.
@@SeanDagher hope so too Mr Dagher. Btw, I am not sure if I am the only one with this issue but in your bandcamp page it says that Hanging Johnny has not been released yet. Just letting you know in case anyone else has experienced this issue
at first i would like to thank you for all the good memories you've gave all of us aboard the Jackdaw, your voice is just simply great. I would love to see an explanation of 'Padstow Farewell' it's one of my favorites
I like this version. Its a lot more melodic than I'm used to with this song but these reinterpretations are why I keep coming back! Love the new cinematic scenes as well. Hopefully get to see more of them in the future.
Yeah, I really didn't want to just do a version exactly like on AC so I found this pretty different version. The AC one is so good, with Nils belting like a machine.
'Believe what you want, that's what we do here.' Thanks for the laugh this morning, it is appreciated!! P.s. the background views of your other singing parts added a very nice touch to the video
I'm glad you like the b-roll footage, if that's what it's called. The "believe what you want" was actually in response to some pretty absolutist feedback I had last week. But I whole-heartedly believe that we all benefit from taking that approach.
@@SeanDagher if absolutist feedback means someone was criticizing you, they can suck it. I consider myself a newbie to your channel but 1. Finding your channel and 2. Great, reading a book Sea Shanties (The Lyrics & History of Sailor Songs) by Karen Dolby. Fantastic to hear you sing them with descriptions when needed. Keep it up, lad.
Great Cinema magic! I was going to ask what type of banjo that was, but then you answered half way through, haha. Great instrument collection too! I hope to get a harpsichord some day.
Just stumbled across you chanel and boy am i glad i did you were singing a lot of the shanties from ac black flag right? i still listen to those everyday and now im gonna listen to these aswell loving the shanties and everything else please keep up the good work :)
Hi Oliver, I'm glad you stumbled across the channel. Welcome aboard. Yes, I sang a lot of the songs in AC. Actually, I think I sang on all of them, but only lead on some. There's lot more of this yet to come.
Tell your daughter she did a great job! What was the instrument behind you, the one with the heart-shaped sound holes? I've never seen that before, but it's neat!
I'll tell her. It's a viola da terra, from Portugal (the Açores, probably). This one is a bastard because it has the neck and headstock of a gitarra and it is stung in 6 pairs instead of 2 triples and 3 pairs, like a VDT should be. They all have the heart-shaped sound holes and many have the vaguely flour-de -lys design below the bridge like this one does.
Great shanty!! Your voice sounds very familiar, did you record some shanties for the Assassin's Creed game ? Sorry if you mentioned it already, i'm new to the channel.

Ok, other shanties, you only sound good loud too.

I actually AM sitting down for the filming and for singing the lead. Then I usually stand up to sing the backs.

@@SeanDagher Ah I was very interested in the balalaika. I was wondering whether there was a folk-friendly tuning for it, like gdae....
@@MarieahM I think standard tuning is EEA, which is pretty folk friendly. The two Es are unison.
