    Being a Golden Retriever Owner I can tell that it's not as easy as it seems to raise a Goldie. Even though they are one of the most intelligent and gentle dogs, there are quite a few challenges that every new parent goes through. So I decided to share all the advice and tips for raising a Golden Retriever.

    I love both breeds, extremely loving and very comfortable with the owner. German shepherd's are protective, golden retrieve are playful. I want to have both. Lovely dogs to have as pets.

    I have a Goldu whom I have named "Google", thinking that he will find (search) things for me once he grows up. He is less than 3 months old now, and I have raised a GSD earlier too. So, I think that they are both extremely wonderful dogs breeds. GSD is definitely a much more risk taking and much more sensitive dog than a golden retriever, which in itself is an experience that can only be felt and SO difficult to describe. I mean my GSD would always know that someone is coming without a doubt and will always be waiting for that. Whereas this boy is just SO SO SO loving and adorable. They both are active dogs, but a Goldu is much more likely to understand your situation and feelings. So if you want someone to understand you and want to see someone to make your day then go for a Golden Retriever, but if you want someone to do anything for you and to be waiting for you when you come home then go for a GSD. Which breed I love more - without any doubt GSD, they are difficult to handle but will give you the best time of your life.

      Thank you for perfectly describing that. I'm looking for a new psychiatric service pup & I'm thinking golden (all my previous dogs were gsd or gsd mixes) & they just don't have that level of emotional intelligence that goldens do. Personally I think GSDS are better for mobility & utility work while retriever breeds are better medical & psychiatric dogs.

    • @SandeepKumar-lq8vd
      @SandeepKumar-lq8vd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AthenaShelly my dear, dogs are so sensitive they are not the same as humans. Their level of emotion is very different than that of us. In fact even we humans have separation anxiety which we call solitary living and it is discouraged by our elders.
      The difference between leaving a Golden Retriever alone and a GSD alone is quite different. When a Golden Retriever is left alone he will tear your papers and your clothes but if a GSD is left alone then he will and can tear your furniture and doors.
      So, you may think that it's better to have a golden retriever, but having a GSD is a very different feeling altogether. I was raised with two elder sisters and when my eldest sister got married my dad brought a GSD puppy the very next day, his logic was one family member is gone so she must be replaced with another one.
      He was very different from this golden retriever boy, but trust me I still love him more him.
      German Shepherds will love you more and we will love Golden Retrievers more. Maybe that's the biggest difference.

    I've been around German Shepherds all my life but I had a Golden in my teenage years who was the sweetest, most fun loving dog. She was a fantastic companion with a brilliant sense of humour and she never failed to put a smile on my face, even when I was going through some pretty dark times.
    Both Germans and Goldens are top tier "man's best friend" kind of dogs and it's easy to see why they're both so popular. GSD's aren't the best choice for new dog owners though and you'll want some hands on experience before you get one.

    We have a 7 and a half year old Golden that we couldn't live without. She can practically understand anything that's said to her. "look what's in your bowl, Pebbles," and off she trots to the kitchen to investigate. Or going outside for a walk and I say we're going in the car, she immediately veers in the direction of the car. When my grandson visits she hangs around with him, protecting him and keeping an eye - like she's guarding him. She is precious.....

      5 weeks old is too early to separate a golden puppy from its mother and litter mates to go to a new home. They learn socialization and how to play with their litter mates. 7 weeks should be the minimum.

    I have owned several Golden Retrievers, all were FANTASTIC dogs!!! I have had only one German Sheperd when I was very young, she was a little too rough for us so we eventually gave her away. Both breeds love being with you but as the video points out the German Sheperds are more agressive with strangers which I did not like but some Goldens can be also. A lot of it is how you train them, they both are good learners and will adapt to what you want if given time. Since most my experience has been with Goldens, I naturally tend to stick with them. I also have traveled extensively with my Goldens, they were all wonderful and would go with me ANYWHERE, ANYTIME! THE ONLY DOWN SIDE TO OWNING A GOLDEN (or any dog) IS HAVING TO DEAL WITH THEIR PASSING, IT WILL RIP YOUR HEART OUT!!! Enoy them for all the years they are with you, but remember, they don't get to stay with us for as long as we would LIKE!!! It is BRUTAL SAYING GOODBYE AT THE END! MANY TEARS WILL FLOW!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE DEALING WITH DEATH, I DON'T RECOMMEND YOU GETTING A DOG WHO WILL BECOME YOUR BEST FRIEND IN THIS WORLD IF TREATED WITH LOVE, PATIENCE AND RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!

That dog's as sweet as can be with a smile that can melt hearts, but she's protective of my girlfriend and I. Couple of weeks ago I can home in the middle of the night while my gf was asleep and our little goldi barked and growled when she heard someone at the door.

  • @michaelmoran7416
    @michaelmoran7416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I've had both and the biggest differences come down to the work they were bred to do. Retrievers need humans to have a job. They have very little natural incentive to be difficult or go against the grain other than a tendency to mischievousness (mine loved shredding the garbage) to nudge their humans to be more involved from time to time. Shepherds are more complicated in my opinion because their work is wrapped up in their pack instincts. They have to protect and guide the weakest members of their pack on the one hand and follow their pack leader on the other. A Shepherd expects you to be a leader worth following, and you will have a problem on your hands if your Shepherd decides you're a sheep who needs herding instead. They need consistent leadership from their humans, not even so much as in their schedule as in the way certain things (feeding, signaling to eliminate, how they have to behave on walks, at the park, etc.) are done and what behavior is expected of them for a given task. With a Shepherd, you should be ready to go with them from Day 1 because they aren't built to wait for your learning curve. A retriever is much more forgiving of that curve. Both are fantastically smart and affectionate in their own way, and sadly, both are overbred and have a tendency towards heartbreaking health problems, so be extremely discriminating in choosing a breeder in either case.

    Given the choice, a GS 100%. My uncle trained GS for our police force, and he had 2-4 huge ones at all times with him, and when I was young, when we were all camping, I remember being absolutly dazzled, and entertained, when he would show off his dogs Skills, and get me to "take anything, any size" and go hide it in the woods. Damn, the dogs would come back in seconds with the hair clip, or whatever...and I was "sure" they were not finding the thing. And they are super protective, they held a Meter reader hostage in their yard up against the house wall all day in the sun until my aunt or uncle got home from work. (before cel phones invented)😂😂🐶

    My dog is a mix of these two.
    Highly intelligent and is so excited to figure out what I'm asking him to do and when I figure out what he's asking of me.
    He does tend to be very defensive against anything going on within his self identified perimeter, (which is way bigger than our yard), but usually responds to "its ok"...for a few minutes at least.
    Interesting thing, he's the first dog I've ever had that, if he is sick at the stomach, will hop into the bathtub to throw up when he can't get outside.
    Every other dog I've had would do it where they were at the time and try to hide it.
    I never trained him for that but damn, it makes clean up easy. I don't even know how you would train a dog to do something like that. Anyone know? He's getting old and its a thing I'd certainly like my next dog to know to do.

    A note on the aggression segment: Both breeds have the potential to be aggressive! In the dog training industry, we sometimes call golden retrievers "golden deceivers" because of the aggression some individuals show. Goldens are actually one of the most common breeds to bite someone partly because everyone expects them to be super friendly.
    On the other hand, we have seen a lot more fear behavior from pet line shepherds in recent years, which can lead to fear aggression.
    Working shepherds, especially Czech lines are significantly more likely to show suspicious behavior and forward aggression, so please do your research and work with a trainer if you are getting a working shepherd.
    All of these dogs have the potential to be wonderful companions, but please make sure you understand what you are getting when you buy a puppy. MEET THE PARENTS!!!!!!! Seeing a picture is not enough to go on. Ask about behavioral history in the lines, and how often the breeder learns a pup turned out aggressive. Additionally, PLEASE SOCIALIZE YOUR PUPPY!!!!!!! Even a dog with the best genetics can turn out fear aggressive if the owner fails to properly socialize the puppy!

    • @snubblebubble4937
      @snubblebubble4937 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dhonerlquinta5008 Yes. It is absolutely essential to your puppy's brain development to socialize prior to completing all vaccinations. Unfortunately, there are still many vets who are giving outdated advice to their clients and advising them to wait to take their dog outside their home until all rounds of vaccination are completed. Vaccines are typically completed at 20 weeks, but this can vary from clinic to clinic.
      Puppy's socialization window is from 3 to 13 weeks of age. This means that if you are getting a puppy from a breeder, your breeder should have started socialization prior to you picking up the puppy. Please inquire into your breeder's socialization process. If they don't have any knowledge about socialization, don't get a puppy from them.
      Socialization can be broken down into two different catrgories: sensory experiences and social experiences. I expect a breeder to focus a lot on the sensory experiences and only a little on the social experiences prior to the puppies going home.
      Sensory experiences include auditory sensations, visual sensations, tactile sensations, and olfactory sensations. Tactile sensations are super important and that includes getting the puppy used to being touched and handled as well as exposing the puppy to different surfaces and textures. Slippery tile, a drainage grait, and wobbly surfaces could be frightening to a puppy who has never experienced those things before. Stairs are another big one.
      It is also really important to make sure your puppy is having *positive* and fun experiences. Frightening experiences will have an adverse affect on your puppy's understanding of the world.
      Social experiences are one of the most vastly misunderstood categories of socialization. It is definitely important for puppies to have positive experiences interacting with new dogs and people. However if your puppy interacts with *every* dog and human it sees, it will begin to expect this from the outside world. This can lead to a very serious conditioned hyperarousal problem later in life. This is why I do a lot of encouraging puppies to focus on me and rewarding them for this in the presence of social distractions so that they learn that I am more fun than the other people and dogs. Yes, I will allow people to pet my dog, and my dog does have play dates, but I am very selective about those experiences.
      I start the sensory socialization as soon as I get the puppy at 8 weeks of age. That is something that can be done in the home very easily. If I have a confident puppy, I will start taking them on little adventures outside the home within that first week. If I have a fearful puppy, I would definitely contact a dog trainer immediately for guidance, but the best answer is to build up slowly to big experiences. I will do a lot of taking the dog places where I can get distance from the hustle and bustle, play or feed the puppy and then go home. The most important thing is that the puppy has good experiences and not frightening ones. But please don't wait until you are done with vaccines to start taking your puppy places. That is a recipe for disaster. If we did that with kids, it would really mess them up.

    Some general statements made that is not correct
    1. Gsd dont need regular bath unless they are outdoors a lot it will make the skin dry.
    2.Not all GSd bark a lot. I cant say what makes them bark, mine is not a big barker.
    3. Destructive behavior comes from letting the dog be the alpha and can happen with any breed more or less

      Golden Retrievers are more suitable for apartments than German Shepherds. But make sure to take them outside every day for walks.

      Dogs have many types of growls. Some growls are playful;, some scared and some aggressive. If it happens in situations that are new to your dog, then its probably fear or aggression, but if it happen while you play with your dog, or rub his belly extremely fast, it's a playful growl.

    I'm an owner of a glden retriever. She's lovely and sweety dog. But she's protective too and she has developed ad real sense of territory . Easy to train but they need time and energy. Otherwise they will destroy everything they find.
